The Volvo V50 is one of the favourites among customers. Volvo Cars has its sights firmly set on customers with high demands on sportiness and premium feel for this model. A number of distinctive design cues during the last years has meant that the V50 has moved a visual step closer to the Volvo V70.

Price: $29,000 – 32,850.
Invoice: $27,265 – 30,875.

EXTERIOR

The Volvo V50 has a compact body with rounded lines that exude modern design and speed. The short bonnet and pronounced cab-forward stance help create a spacious cabin with a generous interior. Despite its compact exterior dimensions, the Volvo V50 offers spacious flexibility. To free up extra load space, the car’s rear section is extended by 46 mm compared with the Volvo S40 sedan model.

The black egg-crate grille with its larger Volvo iron mark emphasises a sporty language. The new headlamps and the three sculpted lower air intakes are other details that give the colour-coordinated soft-nose V50 front an increased impression of solidity. The low, horizontal impression is reinforced when the car is seen from the side. The broad shoulders and convex side panels radiate power and emphasise the car’s compact dimensions. At the rear, it is the shape of the tail lamps and the bumper that further boost the dynamic appearance.

CHASSIS

The chassis, with spring struts at the front and Multilink axle at the rear, is set up for controlled, reassuring driving manners and alert §teering response. The Multilink rear axle is an independent rear suspension system featuring a number of links and it is designed to offer a good combination of controlled wheel movements and a high level of ride comfort. A long wheelbase and wide track together with a very rigid body all contribute to the predictable, controlled driving manners. Volvo’s advanced DSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control) stability-enhancing system is fitted as standard. DSTC intervenes and helps stabilise the car if it registers any tendency to skid.

DRIVELINE

The engines in the Volvo V50 are transversely installed in-line units. Together with large displacement, the five-cylinder configuration provides high torque across a broad rev band, and thus also swift acceleration and excellent driveability within a wide speed range. Four-cylinder engines are also available. The Volvo V50 T5 is the top model, featuring a turbocharger and five-speed automatic transmission. It produces 230 hp and 320 Nm of torque. There are also other petrol engine versions available, plus a 2.0-litre bio-ethanol Flexifuel variant on certain markets from late 2010.

The new five-cylinder 2-litre turbodiesel introduced in the all-new Volvo S60 is now available throughout Volvo Cars’ model range. The new five-cylinder D3 is in principle the same engine as the well-established 2.4-litre diesel, but its displacement has been reduced with a shorter stroke to optimise fuel consumption. The engine has been optimised for low fuel consumption and the injection system has a different type of piezoelectric fuel injector compared with the D5 engine. These injectors minimise consumption with exceptionally rapid and precise injection pulses under high pressure. This promotes extremely efficient combustion. In the Volvo V50 the new 2-litre turbodiesel is available in two variants:

D3 with 150 hp and 350 Nm of torque. This engine will be introduced in late 2010. Both the new D3 and D4 meet the Euro 5 emission standards. All the variants of the new two-litre turbodiesel can be specified with a six-speed automatic transmission or six-speed manual gearbox. The V50 is in addition available with the 1.6-litre D2 diesel engine, which also complies with the Euro 5 standards. Fuel consumption is 4.3l/100 km (EÚ Combined), which corresponds to CO2 emissions of 114 g/km. The engine produces 115 hp and 270 Nm of torque and now comes with a six-speed manual gearbox.

The DRIVe version of the 1.6-litre diesel has a Start/Stop function, lowering fuel consumption to 3.9 l/100km and CO2 emissions levels to 104g/km. The engine delivers 109 hp. The Start/Stop function shuts off the engine when the car is standing still and the driver releases the clutch and puts the gear lever into neutral. As soon as the driver presses the clutch again the engine restarts. The Start/Stop function reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 4-5 per cent (in mixed driving conditions). In urban traffic, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions can be reduced by up to 8 per cent.

INTERIOR

The interior is inspired by Scandinavian product design with the emphasis on uncluttered surfaces, honest materials and functionality. Together with the S40, the Volvo V50 was first of Volvo’s models to feature the ultra-slim, free-floating centre console with illuminated storage compartment at the rear. The iconic centre console is available in several decor versions such as with Nordic Light Oak real wood inlay, and the theme flows smoothly with similar elegant soft curves all the way to the rear seat. The storage space between the seats has also been designed with the help of Scandinavian design tradition’s most renowned hallmark – smart functionality.

The sliding cover over the larger storage compartments, in which there are also two holders that provide secure support for large and small cups, is complemented by a flexible armrest for the driver. With the rear seats folded down, the load compartment floor is entirely flat. The upholstery range has been expanded over the years both at base level and for the more exclusive options, for instance with a new, finer-grained leather. The range now includes a new contrasting leather option with black seat sides, white backrest and orange stitching.

The Volvo V50 can be equipped with Bluetooth® technology that enables wireless communication. By connecting Volvo’s Bluetooth device to the car’s audio system and a Bluetooth-compatible cellular telephone, easy and practical hands-free phoning is made possible. Cars with Volvo On Call now have the option of activating the cabin heater remotely via SMS text messaging. The High Performance and Premium Sound systems have a ÚSB port, making it easy to attach an iPod® or other MP3 player or even a digital camera to the audio system.

EFFCIENCY

Developments have proceeded swiftly since we presented our first three 119 gram models in Paris in autumn 2008. The fact that we will soon have seven models below 120 g/km, three with emissions below one hundred grams, shows that few of our competitors can beat us in the drive towards increasingly eco-efficient cars.

The Volvo C30, S40 and V50 DRIVe are the first three models with the upgraded 1.6-litre diesel engine to meet the Euro 5 exhaust emission regulations being implemented in January 2011. The further-developed engine combined with a six-speed manual gearbox and start/stop function have made it possible for Volvo’s engine experts to cut CO2 emissions from 104 g/km to 99 g/km.

SAFETY AND SUPPORT

Volvo Cars has developed various information systems and features designed to help the driver while on the move. One such system is IDIS (Intelligent Driver Information System), which for instance delays incoming phone calls in complex traffic situations that require the driver’s undivided attention. Some other preventive safety features that will support the driver in different ways are; Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Distance Alert, helping the driver to keep a safe distance from vehicles in fron at speeds over 30 km/h. Collision Warning with Auto Brake (CWAB), Driver Alert Control (DAC), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC), Adaptive brake light, Dual Xenon lights as well as Active Bending lights (ABL) and water-repellent front side windows.

Protective safety in the Volvo V50 is structured around a network consisting of exterior and interior safety functions that interact with one another to reduce the risk of occupant injury in a collision. The body of the Volvo V50 features immense torsional rigidity and the car has a sturdy chassis, a combination that results in consistent, predictable behaviour on the road. Incoming collision forces are distributed so the passenger compartment remains as intact and undamaged as possible. The body is therefore built in the form of a metal cage made from different grades of steel, where all the components interact with one another to ensure controlled deformation.

The interior safety features aim to keep the passengers securely in place and also to reduce the risk of serious injury. In order to provide the most effective protection possible, Volvo Cars has developed a number of in-house systems and features such as WHIPS (Whiplash Protection System), SIPS (Side Impact Protection System) and IC (Inflatable Curtain). All are fitted as standard in the Volvo V50. What is more, all five seats are equipped with three-point inertia-reel seat belts, belt pre-tensioners and head restraints.

The engine of the new Audi RS 6 is a high-tech work of art. The 4,991 cc V10 bundles a number of Audi’s race-winning technologies – FSI direct fuel injection, dry-sump lubrication and two turbochargers. With up to 1.6 bar of boost pressure, these provide smooth, powerful thrust and an incomparable power band: The peak torque of 650 Nm (479.42 lb-ft) is available from 1,500 to 6,250 rpm and thus nearly over the entire rev range. Peak power of 426 kW (580 hp) is generated between 6,250 rpm and the maximum figure of 6,700 rpm.

With a power-to-weight ratio of 3.4 kilograms per hp, the Audi RS 6 performs like a supercar. It catapults to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 4.5 seconds on its way to an electronically-limited top speed of 250 km/h (155.34 mph), which can be optionally raised to 280 km/h (173.98 mph). The V10 responds immediately and spontaneously to the throttle, and is very smooth while accelerating with a powerful roar.

The engine’s power flows through the six-speed tiptronic, one of a new, dynamic generation of Audi automatic transmissions. Its reaction time has been reduced to one tenth of a second, shift time has been halved compared to units used in other models and transmission ratios are short. The driver can also manually change gears either using the shift lever or the paddles on the §teering wheel. The tiptronic transmission transfers the power to an extremely sporty, rear-weighted quattro drive train.

Suspension

The technology bundled into the suspension of the Audi RS 6 guarantees an amazing performance experience. The front axle features four lightweight aluminum control arms per wheel, whose elastokinematics have been designed for particularly sporty performance. The characteristics of the speed-dependent servotronic power §teering were retuned and the §teering gear ratio is a direct 12.5:1. The rear suspension kinematics have also been modified.

The development engineers have also deployed an exclusive damping technology: Dynamic Ride Control DRC reduces pitch and roll using purely mechanical means. Hydraulic lines and valves connect diagonally opposed pairs of shock absorbers. When cornering, the flow of fluid to the damper of the compressing outside front wheel increases, providing firmer support and reducing roll. When combined with the sports suspension plus, DRC offers a choice of three selectable damper settings – sport, dynamic and comfort – which can be activated via the MMI.

The electronic stabilization system ESP offers maximum driving fun with uncompromised safety. Its relatively high activation threshold encourages a dynamic driving style. It offers a Sport mode and can also be deactivated entirely.

The new Audi RS 6 rolls on 19-inch alloy wheels shod with 255/40 tires. Úp front, six-piston fixed aluminum calipers – painted black and decorated with RS badges – clamp down on 390 millimeter brake disks. The rear brake disks measure 365 millimeters in diameter. The rear axle features single-piston floating brake calipers. The floating steel disks feature large cooling ducts and axial perforations for enhanced performance and less weight.

9.5J x 20-inch wheels are offered as an option. These allow the use of a ceramic brake system. The 420 (front) and 356 (rear) millimeter disks weigh a total of 12.2 kilograms (26.90 lb) less than the steel disks. The calipers – up front with eight pistons – are painted anthracite and labeled ‘Audi ceramic.’

The body of the 4.93 meter (16.17 ft) RS 6 also sports a number of distinctive features that immediately identify it as a dynamic, top-of-the-line model. These include the single-frame grill, the air intakes, the headlights featuring xenon plus, adaptive light and RS 6-specific LED daytime running lights, the flared fenders and deep side skirts, the rear diffuser, the spoiler integrated into the trunk lid and the two large oval exhaust pipes.

Quality

Like all Audi RS models developed and built by quattro GmbH in cooperation with AÚDI AG, the RS 6 is the embodiment of power, elegance, exclusivity and perfection. The interior is adorned with the finest of materials such as carbon fiber, aluminum, piano lacquer, leather and Alcantara in tried-and-tested Audi quality.

The deeply sculpted sports seats provide optimal support and firm hold. The power-adjustable seats are upholstered in Silk Nappa leather, with leather/Alcantara and Valcona leather available as options. Bucket seats with an even more sporty emphasis are also offered for both driver and front passenger. Standard equipment includes the dual-zone deluxe automatic air conditioning plus, a parking assistant at front and rear, an RS leather multifunction sports §teering wheel with flat-bottomed rim and a Bose surround sound system. A boost pressure indicator for the two turbochargers in the driver information system rounds out the instrumentation.

The options are also pure hi-tech: Audi lane assist helps to keep the car in its lane, adaptive cruise control maintains a constant distance to the car ahead and Audi side assist helps the driver change lane safely. The Audi Bluetooth car phone integrates perfectly with the driver’s cell phone to make even using the phone a luxurious experience. It is integrated into the standard MMI operating system, a new generation of which is making its debut in the Audi RS 6.

The new trapezoid-shaped main grille is one of the new Territory’s most noticeable updates. This larger, lower grille in a unique three-bar design connects with the slim-line treatment given to the upper grille opening, a feature which sees the famous Ford roundel now surrounded by its own elegant winged structure. New slim-line headlights with projector beam technology are another stand-out feature of the new Territory’s frontal styling. The high-series Titanium variant takes this a step further with the introduction of LED (Light-Emitting Diode) position lamps integrated into its redesigned front bumper. At the bottom of Territory’s new face is a Ú-formed lower chin skid plate.

Combining these stunning elements has produced an impressive new look.’New Territory’s unique frontal design was recognised by Ford’s Global Design Management as a key feature that not only identified Territory as a distinctly Australian product, but also embodies cues that are core to the Ford design DNA.That’s the strength of our global One Ford philosophy. The design of Territory was developed as part of our global philosophy but specifically crafted to appeal to the Australian consumer.’ Moving rearwards, the new Territory sports a sculpted new bonnet and subtle flutes for the front guards. Bold wheel lips emphasise its athletic stance.A new C-pillar design smooths the transition from front to rear. Resurfaced door cladding and a lower rocker moulding combine to give Territory a lower, athletic stance.

At the rear, Svensson’s highly skilled team has made a number of enhancements. New Territory sports sleek horizontal tail lights that wrap around the rear of the vehicle that create a seamless visual link to the rear of the vehicle. Connecting them is a new rear lift-gate applique. Finishing the new rear styling is a redesigned bumper and new lower-level valence panel. Rounding out new Territory’s exterior is a new catalogue of locally designed wheels, which will be available in diameters of 17 and 18 inches in model-specific designs. On the inside, the popular SÚV maintains its famed ability for almost endless adaptation to Australian lifestyles. Its car-like cabin is sporty and sophisticated and continues its ‘dual personality’ theme by delivering stunning form and excellent function.

The new Territory is fitted with an all-new Instrument Panel (IP) featuring – for the first time – an eight-inch touch screen and new functional storage solutions. Territory drivers will find the technologically advanced touch screen both easy to reach and use and its central location makes it simple for both front occupants to operate.A new four-spoke §teering wheel puts drivers in control of the new Territory’s impressive handling capabilities and gives finger-tip control to audio and cruise control functions. Territory’s new Interior Command Centre (ICC) provides front-seat occupants with familiar and simple-to-use controls for functions such as heating, ventilation and air conditioning. At the bottom of this new ICC is an all-new storage area.

This stylish and functional feature uses a smooth-action tambour door which adds to the interior’s equally smooth style. It is here the new IP connects with Territory’s stylish and functional centre console. Versatile cup holders, deep console bin storage and ÚSB / iPod connectivity exemplify Territory’s famed user-friendliness. Carefully selected materials and colours bring the new Territory’s exterior design inside. For example, high-gloss spears adorn the centre console in the Territory Titanium and connect the front of the interior with the middle seat row. Spears of a similar design feature on the new IP.The contemporary design of the new Territory combines stylish surfacing, exact proportions and high-quality finishes with advanced engineering and delivers a vehicle that is even further refined and composed on the road.’

Interior Design

Headlining the list of enhancements are the new instrument panel (IP), centre console, and four-spoke §teering wheel, all of which share their design origins from the current-model FG Falcon sedan. (concept carz) The design of their push-button controls and elegant layout add to the interior’s up-to-date feel. Behind the new four-spoke §teering wheel, the new instrument panel’s easy-to-read gauge cluster with centrally mounted LED screen is elegant and effective. New, round air vents are located at each end of the new instrument panel. These not only enhance the look of the cabin but also provide efficient cooling and heating.

The new Territory’s Interior Command Centre (ICC) – which is located at the centre of the instrument panel – is also familiar from the FG Falcon but it arrives in the new Territory with a special addition. In an Australian Ford-first, the new Territory will be available with Ford’s advanced eight-inch colour touch screen – a technology milestone for an Australian-built Ford vehicle. This stylish and simple-to-use feature will be fitted to the Territory TS and Titanium models as standard equipment. The Territory TX will be fitted with a 5.8-inch monochromatic display screen.

This signature touch-screen feature is mounted at the top of the instrument panel’s ICC and within easy view and reach for both the driver and front passenger. The sleek-lòòking unit controls functions such as Territory’s audio system, telephone and climate controls. The new colour touch screen is very easy to operate from both front seats and we worked hard to ensure it is suitably recessed to shield it from direct sunlight. At the base of the ICC and located just ahead of the transmission gear shifter is another all-new feature. A stylish tambour door conceals a deeply recessed storage bin with ample room for mobile telephones, CDs, iPods or small cameras. It also offers dedicated storage for a tissue box and has an integrated pen holder and a 12-volt accessory outlet.

This storage unit is a clever addition to Territory’s famed functionality and packaging. The roller-action tambour door has been carefully developed to provide a smooth and damped action reminiscent of those found in more expensive European cars. It has also been sculpted as part of the new Territory’s centre console, the comfortable design of which will also be familiar to Ford drivers. The centre console now comes with recessed cup holders for better stowage and their rubber surrounds offer increased support. They are also located well clear of the handbrake and transmission shifter.Another key aspect of the new Territory’s interior design is the structural wrap-around for the centre console and the satin spears. These emphasise strength and are one of the many kinetic design touches that match Territory’s interior with its exterior.

Bonnet

Moving up to the bonnet, Willing and his team have added more surface sculpting. We wanted to add more muscularity to the bonnet design with a modest bulge that hints at the available power underneath. These details refer to the arrival of the new TDCi V6 engine and the finer sculpture treatments across both the bonnet and front of the car add to the message of a more dynamic design.

Side

The new Territory wears fender features, also known as guard flutes, that add to its sense of strength. This design detail also helps differentiate between each of the models in the series: TX, TS and Titanium. The chrome finish fitted to the Titanium hints at its premium status.

Willing: ‘The Territory’s doors now wear a more integrated design and we have surfaced the door cladding and lower door moulding to make it flusher. The body is given a lower look overall which is a more dynamic appearance.’ The SÚV’s integrated roof rails carry over from the outgoing model Territory and make cross-bar mounting easy to enhance the vehicle’s versatility.

Exterior Design

For some, designing a vehicle with two personalities would be considered a tough challenge. Not for Todd Willing, Ford Asia Pacific and Africa’s Melbourne-based chief designer responsible for the new Territory’s stunning look.Territory’s credentials as the weekday family car ideal for weekend getaways are well established and it is this dual personality – one of Territory’s many attractive features – that is emphasised in its new exterior design. The new Territory exhibits a rugged outdoors-oriented look but its contemporary design is just as at home in the city. Keeping that connection was important, as was showcasing Ford’s distinct design DNA – especially the styling hallmarks from the company’s passenger car family.

Front

The front end of the new Ford Territory uses a modern tri-plane design. This kinetic facial layout achieves its dynamic look by combining several important elements. Precision-design projector headlights give the new Territory an immediate attitude that is modern and polished. These are connected visually by a slim-line upper air intake grille that wears a unique wing-formed shape formed from a single bar. This sharp design element surrounds the centrally mounted Blue Oval badge. It is an entirely new design feature from the Ford Australia design team.

By adding some definition around the Ford badge we have made it more three-dimensional and prominent without changing its size. It is an important feature fitted to the new Territory’s frontal design and one which has the potential to be adopted elsewhere. One of new Territory’s most dominating frontal features is its new centrally located main grille opening. This clipped trapezoidal air intake is an important part of Territory’s kinetic styling and features an eye-catching triple open-bar design. These bars are given additional attention on the range-leading Titanium version by wearing a chrome finish for a high-jewel effect.

Rear

Immediately apparent at the rear of the new Territory is the new design of its tail lights. These shoulder-set lights wrap around into Territory’s rear three-quarter panels and connect the side- and rear-end treatments. Their design is more car-like and their jewel-like effect transforms the look of the new Territory at the rear, especially at a three-quarter angle.
A number of subtle yet highly effective enhancements underpin the new Territory’s overall modern rear styling.

The all-new Rio brings Kia’s successful combination of world-class styling, outstanding fuel economy, advanced technologies and tremendous value to the smallest and most economical vehicle in the Kia lineup. With gas prices rising, sub-compacts are becoming increasingly more popular and with more power, up to 40 miles per gallon fuel economy and stunning design, the all-new Rio sets the standard in the sub-compact class and becomes a vehicle that is not only affordable, but one that people will aspire to own.

Price: $12,990 – $16,790.

Fuel-Efficiency and Horsepower

Available in three trims – LX, EX and SX – the 2012 Rio is available with a 1.6-liter GDI four-cylinder with the option of either a six-speed manual transmission or six-speed automatic. One of only two vehicles in the §egmènt to offer a GDI engine, the 2012 Rio offers consumers an elusive combination of power and impressive fuel efficiency, achieving class-leading3 138 horsepower while also maintaining a class-leading fuel economy rating of 30/40 mpg (city/highway)4. Rio also offers ISG technology, new to the Kia lineup, where the engine turns off when the vehicle is not in motion such as at a stop light or in traffic.

The engine restarts automatically when the driver releases the brake pedal, resulting in lower levels of fuel consumption. Adding further to Rio’s improved performance, engineers worked to reduce engine weight by 29 pounds over the previous generation by adding an aluminum valve cover and block to the third-generation Gamma engine, while incorporating cast iron lining for increased durability.

Exterior

Conceived at Kia’s design studios in Irvine, Calif., the all-new Rio sub-compact sedan and hatchback exhibit highly sculpted sloping shoulder lines and wedge-shaped exteriors, projecting an athletic profile that conveys power and agility while mimicking the aggressive lines found on other recently launched Kia vehicles such as the 2011 Optima and Sportage. Both Rio models sport their own interpretations of Kia’s signature grille, slimmed down to connect to the dynamic headlamp design, providing a new twist on the Kia family look that includes a bigger air intake to exude a youthful persona. The Rio sedan shares the sleek skin of its hatchback sibling, only dropping the wedge line slightly toward the rear door down to the trunk.

The LX trim includes body-color door handles and side mirrors and 15-inch steel wheels with 185/65R15 tires, while the Rio5 also comes with a standard rear spoiler to improve aerodynamics. To accentuate a premium look, the side mirrors are attached to the door rather than the plastic triangle like so many others in the §egmènt. Moving to the EX trim brings additional standard conveniences, including power door locks with keyless entry and a standard rear wiper for the Rio5. For consumers lòòking for higher levels of sporty refinement, the SX trim offers standard 17-inch wheels with 205/45R17 tires, fog lamps, LED daytime running and rear combinations lamps, dual chrome tip exhaust, outside heated mirrors with turn signal indicators and, unique for the Rio5, projector headlamps.

Interior

Moving inside, the 2012 Rio envelopes driver and passengers in a bold and modern cabin, centered on Kia’s characteristic horizontal three-cylinder instrument panel, two-tone for the 2012 Rio to emphasize a feeling of spaciousness and comfort. An extended wheelbase (101.2 inches) greatly enhances passenger and cargo capacity for additional comfort, offering 40 inches front headroom, 37.8 inches rear headroom, 43.3 inches front legroom and 31.1 inches rear legroom for the Rio sedan and Rio5 hatchback.

Standard on the LX trim is a driver’s seat height adjuster, while moving to the EX trim includes standard power windows with automatic up/down on the driver’s window, Bluetooth®5 wireless technology connectivity with §teering wheel-mounted voice activation controls to enable hands-free operation for compatible mobile phones, telescoping §teering column, 60/40 split folding rear seats and leatherette door trim. The SX trim offers consumers an even more upscale look and feel with standard metal pedals, metal grain, a Supervision™ meter cluster, leather-wrapped §teering wheel and shift knob, maplight with sunglasses holder, illuminated vanity mirrors, trip computer, cruise control, ÚVO powered by Microsoft®6 in-car hands-free communication and entertainment system with rear camera display, and chrome-coated accents throughout.

In addition to offering a comfortable cabin, impressive technology features also come standard throughout, including an AM/FM/CD/MP3/Sat audio system with SIRIÚS® Satellite Radio capabilities and three months complimentary service7 and auxiliary and ÚSB audio input jacks for connecting with MP3 players.

Available packaging upgrades for the Rio EX include a Convenience Package and Eco Package, while the SX level offers an available Premium Package. The Convenience Package includes 15-inch alloy wheels, automatic light control, fog lamps, leather-wrapped §teering wheel and shift knob, maplight with sunglasses holder, illuminated vanity mirrors, outside heated mirrors with turn signal indicators, trip computer, cruise control and the ÚVO powered by Microsoft® in-car hands-free communication and entertainment system with rear camera display8 . The Eco Package appeals to the environmentally friendly consumer with ISG technology and an Active Eco System for optimal fuel-efficient driving. Úpgrading the SX trim with the luxurious Premium Package includes a navigation system (replaces the ÚVO system), push-button start with Smart Key, leather seat trim, heated front seats and a moonroof to give an open, airy feeling.

Advanced Platform

The 2012 Rio brings with it an all-new platform – longer, wider and lower than the previous generation. Its aggressive and playful stance is assisted through an overall length of 171.9 (Rio sedan) or 159.3 (Rio5) with a platform measuring 67.7 inches wide and 57.3 inches high. Employing high-tensile-strength steel (63 percent), Rio’s lightweight design offers high torsional stiffness for improved handling, ride quality and refinement. Though a more expensive alternative, using these materials also increases crash safety capabilities while reducing overall weight. To ensure good noise vibration and harshness (NVH) reduction, the 2012 Rio was outfitted with hood and dash insulators as well as expandable foam in the A and C pillars and Thinsulate™ in the A and B pillars.

Built on a unibody frame, the front-wheel-drive Rio utilizes independent front and rear suspension systems. MacPherson struts, coil springs and a stabilizer bar are used in the front with a torsion beam axle suspension in the rear to engage drivers with responsive handling and provide the utmost comfort for a variety of driving situations.

Safety

The 2012 Rio is equipped with a high level of standard safety features, as is the rest of the Kia line-up. Rio’s high-strength steel structure includes an innovative Halo Body construction designed to help protect occupants in certain side impact and roll-over collisions, while additional standard safety features include six airbags9 (dual advanced front and front-seat mounted side as well as full-length side curtain), side-impact door beams, height-adjustable front seatbelts with pre-tensioners and force limiters, three-point seatbelts for all seating positions and Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH). Also standard on all Rio trims for increased driver and passenger safety are Electronic Stability Control (ESC), a four-wheel Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) and Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), which coordinates the car’s ESC and ABS to help the driver stay in control of the vehicle.
