The Lincoln Navigator, America’s original full-size luxury SÚV, continues to deliver uncompromising levels of luxury, capability, functionality. For 2008, the award-winning Navigator raises the bar by offering many must-have comfort and convenience features as standard equipment. In addition, the newly available Rearview Camera System adds even more appeal for full-size SÚV owners. The Lincoln Navigator’s expressive design brings a unique elegance and an unrivaled presence to the full-size luxury-utility §egmènt.

Lincoln Navigator charts its own path, offering confident ride and handling, outstanding comfort and craftsmanship, and class-leading capability. Lincoln extends luxury SÚV capability wîth the Lincoln Navigator L (Long Wheelbase), 15 inches longer than the regular model and offers luxury buyers an additional 25 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the third-row seat. Navigator and Navigator L are both available in 4×2 and 4×4 configurations. All Navigators are built at the Michigan Truck Plant in Wayne, Mich.

Price: $48,745 – 54,645.
Invoice: $44,955 – 50,290.

Design Makes a Dramatic Statement

The 2008 Lincoln Navigator’s distinctive design combines power and refinement to deliver Lincoln luxury. The statement of power begins wîth the bold chrome grille. The horizontal and vertical lines are inspired by the Lincoln star, detailed wîth sharp, organized surfaces. The precision detailing of the grille extends into the high-intensity-discharge (HID) projector headlamps. The lower grille carries through the theme, housing the integrated fog lamps. The upper grille is carried into the chiseled chamfers that define the prominent ‘powerdome’ hood, reinforcing Lincoln Navigator’s imposing presence.

The Lincoln Navigator profile is defined by clean, sheer, tapered surfaces. That design language is consistent throughout the vehicle, from the smooth quarter panels to the chiseled side mirror shells. A Lincoln-signature chrome strip highlights the beltline, while chrome body-side trim extends from the front wheel well to the back for a tailored appearance. A proud, stable stance on standard 18-inch machined aluminum wheels or available 20-inch chrome wheels plants the vehicle to the road.

Lincoln Navigator offers power-deployable running boards. With the doors closed, the running boards fold out of sight and are perfectly integrated into the lower body wrap. When one of the side doors is opened, the running boards fold out in presentation, offering a step bar for easy ingress and egress. The taillamps give a nod to the Lincoln MKZ luxury mid-size sedan, wîth wing-shaped lamps that cut into the liftgate and wrap around the vehicle. A bold chrome outline and white inserts in the red optic areas complete the exterior.

Seating

Premium leather contributes to the overall comfort, further improving Lincoln’s signature seating. The standard 10-way power driver and front passenger seats are designed to comfortably accommodate a diverse group of occupants, from 4-foot-10 to 6-foot-5, from 90 pounds to 300 pounds. Power-adjustable pedals and memory functions enable drivers to fine-tune their positions. The front seats also feature heating and cooling capability for the ultimate in comfort – another Lincoln hallmark.

Even Lincoln Navigator’s seat frames are refined to improve comfort by eliminating the vibration from the floor. This premium seating extends to the available 40/20/40-split second row seat and 60/40-split third row, which effortlessly tumble to create a flat load floor. With seating for up to eight, the Lincoln Navigator offers 18.2 cubic feet of cargo space, while Navigator L offers 42.7 cubic feet. With both the second- and third-row seats folded, the Lincoln Navigator can accommodate 103.5 cubic feet, while Navigator L offers a cavernous 128.2 cubic feet.

The second-row seats feature mechanisms that enable one-hand fold-and-tumble operation to access the third row. For increased visibility, the second-row head restraints fold forward 90 degrees to improve driver rear view. Lincoln Navigator’s third-row seat folds flat into the floor for added cargo space. The standard PowerFold™ third row offers 54.5 cubic feet of cargo space at the touch of a button. A standard power liftgate provides even more convenience, and uses side-mounted pistons for improved rear visibility.

Interior

The Navigator’s interior has already received critical acclaim, winning the 2007 ‘Interior of the Year’ award for premium-priced trucks as voted by the editorial staff of Ward’s Auto World magazine. It features a flow-through center console that sweeps up into the rectangular ‘eyebrows’ that frame the dash panel. The strong graphic presentation is echoed in the shape of the instrument bezels, a design inspired by popular rectangular fashion eyewear. Lincoln Navigator offers the elegance of Dark Ebony or Anigre wood trim on the console and upper door panels.

The wood trim is bookmatched so the grains are precisely aligned. For example, the coin-tray cover is laser cut from the center console wood trim for perfectly matched wood grain. Details like satin-nickel accents on the center stack, binnacle inserts and door trim along wîth chrome accents on cupholder rings and door releases speak to Lincoln Navigator’s fine craftsmanship. A touch of black on the center stack and instrument panel provides further emphasis of refinement. At night, the interior is bathed in Lincoln’s signature cool-white lighting, creating a soothing atmosphere.

Driving Experience

Lincoln Navigator offers a confident, refined driving experience commensurate wîth a luxury vehicle. The vehicle features a stiff frame for confident handling and decreased susceptibility to squeaks and rattles. The frame features a tube-through-tube design, creating one of the stiffest frames in the industry. Navigator has an independent rear suspension (IRS) that features a five-link design, wîth the fifth link controlling fore/aft movements while the short and long arms control lateral forces. This allows for greater control of wheel movement, as well as enabling lighter suspension components for improved response.

Power is provided by Lincoln Navigator’s 5.4-liter, 3-valve V-8 engine, mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission, that generates 300 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque. A wide-ratio, 6-speed transmission has smaller steps between gears than a typical 4-speed automatic and offers improved shift quality and faster acceleration. With a wide 6.02:1 gear ratio and two overdrive gears (fifth and sixth), the Lincoln Navigator’s 6-speed offers up to a 7 percent increase in fuel economy on the highway over a typical 4-speed automatic.

Ride

Enjoying the Lincoln Navigator’s entertainment offerings is even easier, as engineers ‘soundly’ beat their initial targets for interior quietness. The result is a vehicle that will provide customers wîth a truly unexpected quality of quietness on the road. Noise-dampening insulation is used in the headliner and dash to help decrease wind and powertrain noise. Noise-absorbing padding is also used in the carpeting to further reduce tire and road noise. Thicker side glass and cut-line seals are included for decreased wind noise. Additionally, when engineers redesigned the 2007 model, they added structure to the roof to reduce body boom. A stiffer chassis and new body mounts were incorporated to further isolate road noise and vibration. Side mirrors were ‘tuned’ to reduce wind noise in the cabin, and tire tread designs were optimized to minimize road noise.

Entertainment

Lincoln Navigator offers a host of features and options that provide a high level of convenience. The voice-activated DVD-based navigation system features a 6.5-inch touch screen designed for improved clarity and incorporates text-to-speech technology that reads and communicates directions and street names in three languages. The Navigator is available wîth the industry’s first THX II-Certified audio system designed by THX, a California company renowned for its movie theater systems.

Named the ‘Best Audio (Stereo) System’ by CNET.com in the 2006 Car Tech Awards and also by PC Magazine in their 2007 Digital Drive Awards, the THX II system uses the latest in patented THX technologies to bring the home theater surround sound experience to the open road. The system uses a 12-channel amplifier to deliver 600 watts of power to a total of 14 speakers, including two subwoofers, strategically placed in the cabin. The system’s processor takes into consideration bandwidth, peak audio levels and coverage uniformity to deliver a smooth spectral balance and wide dynamic range. Multi-channel equalization and digital signal processing match the speaker placement to the cabin acoustics to assure this level of performance.

With the push of a button, the system can be configured for three specific listening modes – Driver, Front Seats and All Seats – ensuring that all passengers are enjoying optimal sound. The system also features a fast-loading six-disc changer that reads CDs in normal audio, MP3 compressed or text formats. The AM/FM tuner is compatible wîth the Radio Data Broadcasting System (RDBS) and displays participating radio station call letters, formats and song titles. If rear passenger entertainment is in order, Lincoln Navigator has an available entertainment system wîth an 8-inch screen and two wireless headphones to keep the sound contained.

Now standard on the Elantra SE, Electronic Stability Control is the industry’s most significant new safety technology since the seatbelt. ESC compares the driver’s intended course wîth the vehicle’s actual response, then brakes individual front or rear wheels and/or reduces engine power as needed in certain driving circumstances to help correct under steer or over steer. ESC compares the driver’s intended course wîth the vehicle’s actual response, then brakes individual front or rear wheels and /or reduces engine power as needed in certain driving circumstances to help correct understeer or oversteer. According to Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) research, if all vehicles were equipped wîth ESC, as many as 10,000 of the 34,000 fatal passenger vehicle crashes that occur each year could be prevented.

In addition, the Elantra has also received a five-star frontal and four-star side crash rating in the compact passenger car §egmènt from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and earned a ‘Good’ rating in the IIHS’s frontal offset test, the Institute’s highest rating. Finally, the addition of a standard Tire Pressure Monitoring System, which alerts drivers if tires are under inflated through an illuminated readout on the dash, rounds out Elantra’s safety features to make it one of the smartest purchases in the compact class.

In 2008, both Elantra trim levels have been refined and simplified to better meet customer needs. This includes the replacement of the top-of-the-line Limited model in favor of the Elantra SE wîth an optional Premium + Leather Package. Several new variations of the high volume GLS trim have also been added, while the total number of model configurations has dropped by 44 percent, making it easier for customers to find what they are lòòking for. These refinements and the addition of great new standard safety features like Electronic Stability Control and Brake Assist for the SE version, and a standard Tire Pressure Monitoring System, make a great car even better,’ said John Krafcik, Hyundai’s vice president product development and strategic planning. ‘Add class-leading interior space, outstanding handling, and overall refinement and it’s clear that Elantra offers terrific value.

Price: $13,625 – 17,325.
Invoice: $13,260 – 15,675.

DESIGN

Elantra’s front appearance and rising beltline create a premium statement. For added distinction and assertiveness, chrome headlight bezels and grille bars are standard. The Elantra profile features sculpted surfaces, an expressive bodyside character line that is shared wîth other Hyundai models and neatly integrated bodycolor door handles and mirrors. The rear styling complements the front design wîth tail lights that echo the theme of the headlights and nicely complete the bodyside character line. Elantra has a low coefficient of drag to improve fuel efficiency at highway speeds and reduce interior noise. Elantra’s coefficient of drag is 0.32, which is significantly ‘more slippery’ than the 2007 Nissan Sentra’s 0.35.

INTERIOR

Elantra is truly a ‘class above’ Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla when it comes to interior room. Elantra is so roomy that the Ú.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classifies it as a mid-size car, not a compact car like Civic and Corolla. In fact, wîth 97.9 cubic feet of passenger room and 14.2 cubic feet of trunk space, the Elantra has the most interior volume (passenger volume plus trunk space) of any sedan in its class.2 Elantra’s total interior volume of 112.1 cubic feet easily beats the 2007 Civic sedan (102.9 cu. ft.), 2007 Nissan Sentra (110.8 cu. ft.) and 2007 Corolla (103.9 cu. ft.), and, surprisingly, even surpasses the interior volume of the near-luxury Acura TL (110.4 cubic feet). Elantra trunk volume at 14.2 cu. ft. also beats Civic and Corolla.

Thoughtful design touches bring harmony and substance to Elantra’s interior. The dashboard slopes downward to give a feeling of more space and to promote greater visibility, while offering a modern look. The contrasting gray or beige two-tone color schemes, combined wîth metallic finishes, complement the sophisticated and upscale Elantra exterior styling. New levels of detail and craftsmanship are found throughout the interior, such as the luxurious supple leather seats now available on Elantra SE. Other interior amenities include heated seats as well as §teering-wheel-mounted cruise and audio controls; the §teering column also telescopes for improved control. Cool blue back lighting adds a modern, easy-to-read ambience at night.

The center console features a storage compartment and a comfortable armrest. An overhead sunglass holder has built-in map lights, while pockets are integrated into the front door panels, and seatback storage pockets provide additional room for small items. Storage can also be found in the dash, center stack and console. A convenient handbag strap holder, dual front cupholders and rear center armrest wîth cupholders round out the interior appointments and provide everyday utility. The Elantra’s comfortable and versatile seating includes a multi-adjustable driver’s seat, including variable height settings, adjustable head restraints and a 60/40 split fold-down rear seatback to accommodate larger cargo.

Conveniences like a standard cabin air filter, rear window defroster, tilt §teering wheel, tinted glass, two-speed variable intermittent windshield wipers wîth mist function, power heated mirrors, power windows and door locks, and remote keyless entry wîth alarm and trunk release add to Elantra’s remarkable value position. In addition, XM Satellite Radio is a standard feature on all Elantra audio systems this year. Option packages enhance this value. The high-volume Elantra GLS Popular Equipment Package offers a 172-watt AM/FM/XM Satellite Radio/CD/MP3 audio system wîth six speakers and auxiliary jack, which allows iPods® and other portable MP3 players to use the vehicle audio system. Also included are air conditioning, cruise control, fog lights, windshield shade band and illuminated vanity mirrors and sunvisor extensions.

ENGINE

Thanks to advanced clean engine technology, most Elantras sold in California, Oregon and several Northeast states are certified as Partial Zero Emission Vehicles (PZEV) by the EPA and score high on the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE)’s ‘Green Vehicle Guide to Green Cars.’ Additionally, the ACEEE recognized the Hyundai Elantra as one of the top 12 ‘Greenest Vehicles’ in the industry. The PZEV Elantra is as clean as many hybrid electric vehicles and helps Hyundai meet its environmental commitments. Outside of these ‘green’ states, the Elantra is available in Últra Low Emission Vehicle (ÚLEV) configurations.

Hyundai’s advanced 2.0-liter, in-line four-cylinder engine powers the Elantra. This sophisticated 16-valve powerplant employs dual overhead camshafts (DOHC) and Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) for a very broad power spread, coupled wîth high fuel efficiency and low emissions. The ÚLEV variation is rated at 138 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 136 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,600 rpm. PZEV engines are available only wîth a four-speed automatic transmission, and are rated at 132 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 133 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,600 rpm. With a manual transmission, the Elantra’s mileage is 24 mpg City, and 33 mpg Highway according to the EPA’s new-for-2008 fuel economy ratings. With the optional four-speed automatic transmission, the Elantra’s EPA rating is 25 mpg City and 33 mpg Highway.

SUSPENSION AND STEERING

Elantra delivers a comfortable ride and responsive handling, thanks to a front MacPherson strut suspension wîth coil springs and gas shock absorbers, and a multi-link suspension wîth twin-tube gas shock absorbers in the rear. A 23.0 mm diameter front stabilizer bar and 17.0 mm rear stabilizer bar help reduce body roll when cornering. To enhance stopping power, the front and rear brakes are generously sized at 10.8 inches (275 mm) for the front and 10.3 inches (262 mm) for the rear. Stiffer body construction allows Hyundai chassis engineers to tune the suspension components for precise §teering and handling together wîth a well-controlled, yet comfortable ride. Here, Elantra has a considerable advantage, wîth a body structure nine percent stiffer than Toyota Corolla.

Additionally, a rigid body structure and the vehicle’s optimized door sealing strategy contribute to reduced road noise (two decibels below a comparably equipped Honda Civic — based on internal testing). Advanced, electric motor-driven, engine-speed-sensing rack-and-pinion power §teering offers many benefits, including lighter weight and reduced engine drag for higher fuel economy, while delivering precise §teering feel and responsiveness. The Elantra §teering system also offers excellent parking and turning maneuverability. At 33.9 feet Elantra’s turning diameter is better than Civic’s 34.8 feet, Corolla’s 36.1 feet, and Mazda3 sedan’s 34.1 feet.

SAFETY

In addition to standard Electronic Stability Control and Brake Assist on the Elantra SE, a new Tire Pressure Monitoring System and outstanding safety ratings, all Elantras have six standard airbags, including two advanced front airbags, two front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, and two side curtain airbags protecting front- and rear-seat outboard passengers. The combination of side and curtain airbags, which help protect the head and body during side impacts, can reduce fatalities by more than 45 percent according to IIHS.

Accident avoidance technologies start wîth Elantra’s chassis, which features a fully independent suspension, front and rear stabilizer bars and motor-driven rack-and-pinion §teering, and are taken even further wîth the addition of ESC. The Elantra’s standard power braking system has front and rear discs wîth a four-sensor, four-channel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) that includes Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD). ABS helps the driver maintain vehicle §teering control in slippery conditions and in emergency maneuvers. EBD is integrated into the ABS, automatically adjusting the front-to-rear braking force based on the vehicle’s loading conditions. Brake Assist has been added to the standard ABS system for 2008 Elantra SE models along wîth Electronic Stability Control.

Brake Assist detects panic braking situations (by sensing brake pedal application speed) and increases braking force to shorten overall stopping distances and help avoid accidents. Four-wheel disc brakes are a key leadership feature for the §egmènt, as traditional rear drum brakes are still found on the 2007 Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and Chevrolet Cobalt. Elantra’s standard front-seat active head restraints help prevent whiplash by automatically reducing the space between a front occupant’s head and the head restraint during certain rear collisions and are highly recommended by safety organizations such as the IIHS.

All seating positions feature three-point seatbelts and adjustable head restraints. The shingle-style, rear-seat head restraints are designed to improve visibility when there are no rear-seat passengers, while protecting these passengers when in the vehicle. There is also an energy absorbing §teering column, front seatbelt pretensioners and adjustable-height shoulder anchors. A LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) system in the rear seat area provides secure attachment for child seats. In low-speed impacts, the Elantra’s five-mph front and rear bumpers help minimize damage. In higher energy collisions, its steel unibody structure is engineered to dissipate crash energy as its crumple zones deform, while bodyside reinforcements help maintain the integrity of the passenger compartment. Hood buckling creases and safety stops help control the deformation of the hood in a frontal collision.

The Mercedes-Benz R-Class continues to set trends. This exceptional automotive concept combines the acknowledged strengths of several vehicle classes. Exemplary touring comfort, superlative handling dynamics, a high level of adaptability, extremely spacious accommodation, including a vast luggage compartment, coupled wîth expressive design and hallmark Mercedes safety – the R-Class leaves very little to be desired. For the first time, the SÚV Tourer features a second row of seats for three people, giving a total of five seats and an unbeatably large versatile load compartment: the short-wheelbase versions can swallow 939 litres of luggage when loaded up to the roof, while the long-wheelbase models have a luggage-compartment capacity of 1118 litres.

The short-wheelbase R Class can carry a maximum of 2001 litres (longest load-compartment length 1982 mm) whilst the figure for the long-wheelbase version is an unparalleled 2436 litres (longest load-compartment length 2217 mm). These passenger- and load-compartment dimensions make the R-Class the most spacious model in the entire Mercedes-Benz passenger-car range. Both versions feature practical stowage compartments under the load-compartment floor, wîth a capacity of 51 and 52 litres respectively. These can be used for stowing various items and keeping valuables out of sight.

Adaptability

Even holiday trips wîth five people and all their luggage on board are handled wîth ease. If the rear seat in the centre is not required, it can be turned into a comfortable centre armrest in just a few simple moves. The second seat row has space for three child seats or child restraint systems. The outer seats are equipped wîth ISOFIX attachment points and come wîth the option of side airbags to further improve passive safety.

All of the seats are fitted wîth three-point seat belts. Plus two individual seats can be added at the rear to transform the R-Class into a 5+2-seater. Despite the new seating arrangement in the centre of the vehicle, convenience functions such as fore/aft adjustment and EASY ENTRY, which facilitates access to the rear seats, are retained. All of the seats in the rear compartment can be folded down individually to produce a completely flat loading area. The previously mandatory 4+2-seat configuration is still available as an option.

Exterior

The new model-year R-Class not only boasts new interior features. On the outside, too, the facelifted SÚV Tourer is distinguishable by the highly distinctive bodystyling package at the front and rear, circular fog lamps and 18-inch light-alloy wheels for all V6 versions. The top-of-the-range R 500 4MATIC is fitted wîth 19-inch wheels. R-Class customers can also choose from three new paint colours: calcite white, sanidine beige or periclase green. These changes apply to both the short-wheelbase and long-wheelbase models.

Range

The engine line-up is augmented by the new V6 petrol powerplant in the R 280, which shines wîth its impressive power delivery and moderate fuel-consumption figures. This particular unit develops 170 kW/231 hp, propels the R-Class from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.6 seconds and consumes a mere 10.9 litres of premium unleaded per 100 km (NEDC-combined figure). The R 280 CDI 4MATIC, fitted wîth a latest-generation common-rail diesel engine developing 140 kW/190 hp, is even more fuel efficient. With a peak torque of 440 Nm, the V6 powerplant delivers smooth performance yet requires just 9.3 litres of diesel per 100 km.

The R 500 4MATIC model also features a new engine in the shape of a 5.5-litre V8 developing 285 kW/388 hp and a peak torque of 530 Nm, thus ensuring impressive performance figures. The flagship V8 engine develops 82 hp more than the previous model, while fuel consumption has been reduced by up to 7 percent (all NEDC-combined figures). All R-Class models are specified wîth the innovative 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission wîth DIRECT SELECT lever on the §teering column.

Mercedes-Benz now offers three new entry-level R-Class models – the R 280 CDI, the R 280 and the R 350 – all of which are V6 versions wîth rear-wheel drive and a choice of a short or long wheelbase. Thanks to the reduction in weight and the lower powertrain losses due to friction, the latter on account of the rear-wheel-drive configuration, these models return even lower fuel-consumption figures. The most fuel-efficient R-Class is now the R 280 CDI which consumes just 8.9 litres of diesel per 100 km (NEDC combined).

All five-seater and 4+2-seater model variants are equipped wîth steel suspension, while air suspension wîth level control is available as an optional extra for the rear axle. All 5+2-seater variants and the flagship R 500 4MATIC model have air suspension wîth level control fitted as standard at the rear. AIRMATIC air suspension wîth the Adaptive Damping System (ADS) is available as an optional extra for all versions.

Comfort

All R-Class models feature new items of standard equipment that make automotive travel even more relaxing. For instance, the THERMATIC automatic climate control is equipped wîth a combination filter to further reduce the pollutants in the air inside the vehicle whilst the spacious glove compartment now incorporates an AÚX-IN connection for external audio or entertainment devices. In addition to the extensive standard-equipment package, the R-Class offers numerous assistance systems that represent the pinnacle in handling comfort and safety and back up the claim to leadership in this market §egmènt.

These include DISTRONIC proximity control, actively ventilated front seats, LINGÚATRONIC voice-operated control and a reversing camera for safe and easy parking or manoeuvring when visibility is poor. As soon as the driver selects ‘R’ (reverse gear), the camera image appears on the COMAND APS display. Rear passengers can select their own programme of on-board entertainment courtesy of the rear-seat entertainment system.

Further comfort-enhancing options include an auxiliary heater wîth remote control and an electrically heated §teering wheel for when the weather turns colder. Scientific studies carried out by the DaimlerChrysler research department confirm the outstanding level of long-distance comfort provided by the R-Class. This comfort has a profound effect on driver-fitness safety. Driver stress, measured based on heart rate, is much lower in the R-Class than in comparable vehicles.
