The 2012 Infiniti QX again offers a high-stiffness frame structure that enhances ride comfort while reducing noise, vibration and harshness, a standard 5.6-liter V8 engine rated at 400 horsepower and 413 lbs-ft of torque that combines the responsive acceleration of Infiniti’s VVEL (Variable Valve Event & Lift) technology wîth the efficiency of Direct Injection Gasoline (DIG™), and 7-speed automatic transmission. The QX interior remains long on luxury and comfort, including standard Infiniti Hard Drive Navigation System, Around View™ Monitor, Bose® 13-speaker Premium Audio System, available perforated semi-aniline leather-appointed seating and an available Theater Package wîth dual 7-inch color monitors.

Price: $58,700 – 61,800.

Power and Innovation

The 2012 Infiniti QX is designed to attract and hold viewers’ attention, conveying its underlying sense of power and strength. The bold front chrome grille is flanked by automatic on/off bi-functional xenon headlights wîth windshield wiper interlock and integrated front fog lights. Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS) wîth auto-leveling headlights and headlight washers are also available. Other exterior features include LED taillights, heated, power-folding sideview mirrors wîth integrated turn signals, courtesy lights and reverse tilt-down feature, body color running boards, body color integrated front and rear splashguards built into the wheel arches, roof rails, power sliding tinted glass moonroof and a power rear liftgate. A front underbody spoiler, functional rear liftgate spoiler and redesigned side mirrors help provide aerodynamics of 0.36 Cd and zero lift. The QX’s strong presence is accented by the powerful wheel and tire combinations – standard 20-inch and available 22-inch – and a palette of six distinctive exterior colors: Mountain Sage, Liquid Platinum, Platinum Graphite, Black Obsidian, Dark Currant and Moonlight White.

All 2012 Infiniti QXs feature a high-stiffness frame structure wîth large side rail section width, connecting structures between each crossmember and side rails, an integrated rear hitch member, and a special rear body ring structure around the tailgate – all designed to help provide a quiet, comfortable ride. The second-generation engine and transmission designs deliver a combination of power, efficiency and refinement worthy of the Infiniti name. The 5.6-liter 32-valve DOHC aluminum-alloy V8 features Infiniti’s advanced VVEL (Variable Valve Event & Lift) technology and new Direct Injection Gasoline (DIG™) system. The VVEL system combines hydraulic-controlled variable valve timing and electronically controlled variable valve lift on the intake side to help improve performance and response.

Throttle response is enhanced by directly controlling the intake valve, rather than using the traditional method of controlling intake wîth the throttle valve. The VVEL system also offers improved emissions and fuel efficiency (over non-VVEL designs) by substantially reducing the intake resistance that occurs when the engine’s throttle valve opening is narrowed and output is low. The DIG™ system provides better wide-open throttle performance and improved fuel economy and emissions performance (versus a non direct-injection system) by reducing engine knock, improving combustion stability and offering more precise injection control. The engine is rated at 400 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque, while delivering estimated fuel economy of 14 mpg City, 20 mpg Highway and 16 mpg Combined for both the QX56 2WD and 4WD models.

All 2012 QXs come equipped wîth a standard 7-speed automatic transmission wîth Adaptive Shift Control (ASC) and manual shift mode wîth Downshift Rev Matching (DRM). The QX is offered in rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive, wîth the 4WD model featuring Infiniti’s proven All-Mode 4WD? system wîth Auto, 4H and 4L modes. The system is designed to distribute torque to all four wheels when road conditions warrant (up to 50 percent can go to the front wheels on demand), helping to enhance traction. All QX models also include Hill Start Assist. With Hill Start Assist, if a driver stops on a slope and steps off the brake pedal, the system will keep the QX stationary for a few seconds – wîth no roll back. This enables drivers to easily switch from the brake pedal to the accelerator on steep inclines.

An advanced Hydraulic Body Motion Control system is available on both 2WD and 4WD models (as part of the Deluxe Touring Package). The system helps to reduce body lean in turns, resulting in improved ride comfort for passengers in all three rows. Suspension travel is automatically controlled by hydraulic chambers integrated into each shock absorber. The chambers are cross-linked wîth piping, allowing for the transfer of hydraulic fluid, managed seamlessly by nitrogen-charged accumulators, from one side of the vehicle to the other. This enables the system to vary suspension travel independently on either side of the vehicle, thereby counteracting body lean and creating a luxurious, flat ride’ previously unavailable to drivers in this §egmènt.

The QX’s suspension is an independent double-wishbone design front and rear, wîth Dual-Flow Path® twin tube shock absorbers and an automatic rear leveling system that seeks to maintain uniform ground clearance and departure angle, even when towing or carrying cargo, by automatically adjusting the air pressure in the system’s air bladders. Braking is provided by 4-wheel disc brakes (13.8-inch vented discs front and rear) wîth Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD). A hydraulic brake booster helps to generate firm pedal feel wîth reduced travel, thereby increasing system responsiveness. Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) and 2-wheel or 4-wheel Active Brake Limited-Slip (ABLS) are standard on every QX56. Engine-speed-sensitive power §teering is also standard.

The QX’s maximum towing capacity is 8,500 pounds for both 2WD and 4WD models. A special tow mode revises shift patterns when engaged. Standard towing features include a Class IV tow hitch and 7-pin wiring harness integrated into the rear bumper (with a cover for an elegant appearance when not in use). Every 2012 QX comes wîth 20-inch, forked 7-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels wîth P275/60R20 all-season tires, while 22-inch, 9-spoke forged aluminum-alloy wheels wîth P275/50R22 all-season tires are optionally available. A Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) wîth four-corner pressure readout and Tire Inflation Indicator is also standard.

Two interior colors are available – Wheat or Graphite – along wîth two interior finisher colors, Tuscan Burl or a darker Mocha Burl available wîth the Deluxe Touring Package. The long list of additional comfort and convenience features includes 9 cupholders and 4 door-pocket bottle holders, Tri-Zone Automatic Temperature Control, Infiniti Intelligent Key wîth Push Button Ignition, Fine Vision electroluminescent gauges and Infiniti signature analog clock. Available as part of the Deluxe Touring Package is an Advanced Climate Control System (ACCS) wîth Plasmacluster™ air purifier, Grape Polyphenol filter and auto recirculation.

Among the QX’s available premium entertainment and technology features are an 8-inch WVGA color touch-screen display, Infiniti Controller for use wîth vehicle information systems and comfort and convenience features, and the Infiniti Hard Drive Navigation System wîth XM NavTraffic® wîth Real-Time Traffic Information, XM NavWeather™ wîth Real-Time Weather and 3-day forecast (XM® subscription required, sold separately) and Zagat Survey® Restaurant Guide. Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System is standard, as is the convenient Around View™ Monitor wîth Front and Rear Sonar System. The Around View™ Monitor is standard on the QX – the third Infiniti model to adopt it and first in its §egmènt. The system provides the driver wîth a virtual 360° view of their vehicle to aid in parking situations. This iteration of Around View™ Monitor includes a 180° RearView camera mode.

The Bose® 13-speaker Premium Audio System includes two subwoofers. Rear headliner-mounted 3rd row speakers ensure that sound quality is not compromised by obstructions such as luggage or cargo. New for 2012 is an available Bose® Cabin Surround® sound system wîth 15 speakers, which is part of the Deluxe Touring Package. Other standard equipment includes a single in-dash CD/DVD player wîth MP3 playback, XM® Satellite Radio, ÚSB connection port for use wîth iPod® Interface or other compatible devices and Streaming Audio via Bluetooth®. The QX allows playback of games or movies in the rear (games and movies sold separately), while front occupants listen to audio all at the same time. The two 7-inch color monitors include an auto-bright system that adjusts for daytime, clouds/evening and night/tunnel lighting.

Available Technology

The 2012 Infiniti QX again offers a range of advanced technology systems. The QX includes both Infiniti’s Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Lane Departure Prevention (LDP) systems. The LDW and LDP systems use a small camera installed behind the windshield to detect lane markers in front of the vehicle, calculate its position relative to those lane markers and help warn the driver of a potential unintended lane departure wîth a visual indicator and audible buzzer. If the driver does not return the vehicle back toward the center of the travel lane, the LDP system assists the driver wîth a gentle application of the brakes on the opposite side of the drift.

A Blind Spot Warning (BSW) system is also available. It illuminates an indicator light if another vehicle is detected in the blind spot area. If the driver then activates the turn signal, the indicator flashes and an audible warning sounds. The newly available Blind Spot Intervention™ (BSI) system, a world’s first system, provides selective braking if the vehicle approaches and adjacent lane while another vehicle is detected in the blind spot area to help the driver return the vehicle back toward the center of the lane of travel.

Optional on the QX56 is Infiniti’s advanced Intelligent Cruise Control (Full-Speed Range), which, using a combination of laser sensors, throttle and brake actuators and the QX56′s braking system, measures the distance to the vehicle ahead and automatically adjusts the QX56′s speed to help maintain a pre-selected following distance. Distance Control Assist (DCA), which intuitively prompts the driver to release the throttle and applies the brakes in slowing traffic, is available as part of the Technology Package – along wîth Intelligent Brake Assist (IBA) wîth Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and front Pre-Crash Seat Belts.

The QX56′s extensive list of standard safety features includes an Advanced Air Bag System (AABS) wîth dual-stage supplemental front air bags wîth seat belt and occupant classification sensors; roof-mounted curtain side impact supplemental air bags wîth rollover sensor for outboard occupant head protection for all three rows; front seat-mounted side impact supplemental air bags; 3-point front seat belts wîth pretensioners, load limiters and seat belt reminder; 3-point seat belts for all rear seat occupants (including center position); front seat Active Head Restraints; LATCH System (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren), Zone Body construction wîth front and rear crumple zones and steel side-door guard beams.

The standard Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) includes an individual tire pressure display and Tire Inflation Indicator. Maintaining proper tire pressure helps to maintain handling performance, achieve good fuel economy and long tire life. The Tire Inflation Indicator provides both visual and audible signals to help owners conveniently maintain correct tire pressures. While the owner inflates the tire, the hazard lights flash letting the customer know to continue filling the tire. When the tire reaches the appropriate pressure, the horn will sound letting the owner know to stop filling the tire. Drivers can also monitor individual tire pressures from the interior 8-inch display.

Models and Packages

The 2012 Infiniti QX is available in two well-equipped models: Infiniti QX56 2WD and Infiniti QX56 4WD. Each is equipped wîth the advanced 5.6-liter V8 and 7-speed automatic transmission and a full range of luxury and performance features including leather-appointed seating, Infiniti Hard Drive Navigation System, Around View™ Monitor and Bose® Premium Audio system.

Price: $22,045 – 29,245.
Invoice: $21,435 – 27,545.

Jeep engineers increased acoustical treatment in the 2011 Wrangler and Wrangler Únlimited, resulting in significantly reduced interior noise. To provide a more premium appearance, the 2011 Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Únlimited Sahara models boast an all-new, premium, body-color hard top. Several new Jeep Wrangler colors are available for 2011, including Detonator Yellow, Deep Cherry Red, Sahara Tan, Cosmos Blue and Bright White. Production of the new 2011 Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Únlimited began earlier this week at the Toledo Assembly Complex in Toledo, Ohio.

Body Styles, Trim Levels and Options

The 2011 Jeep Wrangler can be had in two-door regular and four-door Unlimited body styles with Sport, Rubicon and Sahara trim levels available with both. The Wrangler Sport comes standard with 16-inch steel wheels, manual folding soft top, foglamps, cruise control, height-adjustable driver seat, tilt-only steering wheel, a one-piece flip-and-fold removable rear seat and a six-speaker sound system with a CD player, an auxiliary audio jack and steering wheel controls. The Unlimited Sport gets air-conditioning, a 60/40-split-folding rear seat and a bigger fuel tank.

The Rubicon (regular or Unlimited) adds 17-inch alloy wheels, special tires, off-road suspension, an electrically controlled antiroll bar that can be disconnected for more wheel articulation while off-road, electronically locking front and rear differentials, a stronger front axle, a special low-range transfer case and rock rails. The Rubicon also features equipment unrelated to its hard-core off-road abilities, including acoustic insulation under the hood, automatic headlamps, air-conditioning, leather-wrapped steering wheel and satellite radio (optional on Sport). The Power Convenience Group (standard on Rubicon Unlimited, optional on both Sport models and the two-door Rubicon) adds keyless entry, power locks and windows, and heated mirrors.

The Sahara adds to the Sport equipment 18-inch alloy wheels, the Rubicon’s non-off-road items and the Power Convenience Group, plus special exterior and interior trim, side steps and a six-speaker Infinity sound system. The Connectivity Group adds an iPod/USB audio interface, Bluetooth and on the Sport, a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Optional on all trims is the so-called “Freedom Top” three-piece modular hardtop that includes a rear defroster, rear window washer/wiper and tinted glass windows.

The Freedom Top is body-colored on the Sahara and unpainted black plastic on Sport and Rubicon models. The two-door Sport can be equipped with special half doors that feature plastic windows, although this eliminates the option of power accessories. The Rubicon and Sahara can be optioned with a fully integrated touchscreen navigation system and a two-tone leather-upholstery package that includes heated front seats.

Interior Design and Special Features

Despite the increase in available niceties, this is still a vehicle meant to drive through dust, dirt and muck and then be easily cleaned afterward. Interior materials and switchgear are improved this year, and the design now has a rounder, more organic look. While the two-door’s backseat can host only two passengers, the Unlimited has room for three. The four-door also offers 86 cubic feet of cargo space when the second-row seats are folded. With its soft top, however, storing cargo inside the Wrangler can be a risky situation since only the glovebox and center console can be locked. The optional hardtop is a smart solution, but you’ll need somewhere to store it should you wish to drive al fresco.

Powertrains and Performance

Every 2011 Jeep Wrangler is powered by a 3.8-liter V6 that produces 202 horsepower and 237 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual (with hill-start assist) is standard and a four-speed automatic is optional. Most Wranglers come standard with four-wheel drive (includes high- and low-range transfer-case gears), though the Unlimited can be had with rear-wheel drive. Rubicon models have a specialized transfer case that provides extra-low gearing for enhanced off-road ability. In Performance testing, a Wrangler Unlimited with the automatic took a leisurely 9.7 seconds to reach 60 seconds. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 15 mpg city/19 mpg highway and 17 mpg combined. Opting for the rear-drive Unlimited nets you 1 additional mpg on the highway.

Safety

All 2011 Jeep Wranglers feature antilock brakes, stability control and hill start assist. Front-seat side airbags are optional. The Jeep Wrangler has not been rated using the government’s new, more strenuous 2011 crash-testing procedure. Its 2009 rating (which isn’t comparable to 2011 ratings) was a perfect five stars in frontal-impact protection. Similarly, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Wrangler its highest rating of “Good” for frontal-offset impacts. However, without the optional side airbags, the Wrangler’s side-impact crashworthiness was deemed “Poor” for the two-door (the IIHS’s worst rating possible) and only “Marginal” for the four-door Unlimited (the second-lowest rating). The Wrangler Unlimited came to a stop in a long 137 feet.

Driving Impressions

The 2011 Jeep Wrangler is pretty much unstoppable in off-road situations, especially in Rubicon guise, thanks to its specialized hardware. The Wrangler Unlimited four-door isn’t as maneuverable on tight trails as the two-door model, but its roomier interior means you can carry more gear. The Wrangler is also surprisingly fun to drive around the city. Although certainly tippy through turns and short on grip, the Wrangler provides a commendable amount of feedback through its wheel. The Wrangler’s biggest dynamic downfall is its thirsty V6, which is gutless both on the highway and when trying to accelerate quickly. Excessive wind and road noise are two additional drawbacks for highway use.

The Audi R8 is available as both a Coupe and Spyder, wîth each style offering two levels of power – a 4.2-liter FSI® V8 or a 5.2-liter FSI V10. The V8 generates 430 hp at 7,900 rpm, wîth 316 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 – 6,000 rpm, while the 5.2 liter achieves 525 hp at 8,000 rpm wîth 391 lb-ft of torque at 6,500 rpm. Either version can be paired wîth a manual or automatic R tronic® transmission. The R tronic provides extremely quick shifting and can be controlled by paddle shifters on the §teering wheel. Audi launch control also is featured wîth the R tronic, allowing for faster starts by controlling slip. The quattro® all-wheel-drive system is standard and ensures additional grip for all driving situations and surfaces.

The ASF® technology makes the R8 relatively lightweight while maintaining an extremely rigid frame to enhance performance. The unmistakable exterior design, wîth its low stance and forward cockpit, contribute to the dynamic look of the R8. A fully enclosed diffuser underbody minimizes lift, and the automatically-deployed rear spoiler ensures that sufficient downforce is deployed. Beautifully designed and prominent sideblades incorporate the air intakes that draw attention to the mid-engine design of the coupe. The engine packaging is meticulously designed to make the view through the glass covered coupe hatch a delight, while aluminum optic engine cooling vents adorn the Spyder.

The R8 Spyder delivers a holistic exterior design wîth integrated side air intakes that replace the sideblades in order to accommodate the soft top roof. The soft top opens and closes neatly in 19 seconds at up to speeds of 31 mph. The soft top enables tighter packaging when folded and lowers the center of gravity versus a hard top convertible design. The cover for the top is made of a carbon fiber composite, further reducing weight, while triple layer insulation minimizes cabin noise and insulates against cold and heat. The heated rear glass window is integrated into the bulkhead and can be raised and lowered via a switch. An aluminum optic A-pillar and windshield surround add a unique design element visible primarily when the top is down.

Price: $114,200 – 196,800.
Invoice: $106,206 – 183,024.

The interior of the R8 fully complements the exterior. Sleek and artful, the most prominent feature of the R8 interior is the monoposto design that features a large arch sweeping around the dashboard. With the wheels pushed to far corners of the R8, its maximized wheelbase provides a comparatively generous amount of interior space. Seats are constructed of either leather / Alcantara® for the 4.2 or Nappa leather in the 5.2. Thermal-resistant leather used for seats in the Spyder lowers the surface temperature by up to 68 degrees on hot, sunny days. Available leather options abound, allowing owners to customize the R8 to their personal tastes. Other personalization is available wîth the selection of carbon fiber Sigma interior inlays, door sills and available illuminated door sill inserts displaying the R8 model insignia.

The R8 features advanced technologies for which Audi has become known, including available Audi MMI®, available Audi MMI Navigation plus, and an available Bang & Olufsen® Sound System. The Bluetooth® microphone of the Spyder is integrated into the seatbelt to minimize wind noise while speaking via the Bluetooth system.ASF construction increases stability and provides an extremely rigid body shell, plus specially constructed front and rear energy absorbing zones provide protection in the event of a collision. ESC contributes to stability, and vehicle occupants are protected by a full complement of air bags, including front, seat and chest side, and knee airbags. A tire pressure monitoring system ensures that owners are warned if pressure falls below a preset threshold.

Body and Interior

The forward-thrust cockpit and the engine compartment behind it are key to the proportions of the R8. Large wheel wells and hungry air inlets visualize its potential, while the upright sideblade structures the flank. LED headlights are standard in ten-cylinder R8 models and available as an option for the eight-cylinder version. The body of the R8 is largely hand-built at the craft-scale production shop at the Neckarsulm site. Featuring an aluminum Audi Space Frame (ASF), it tips the scales at just 210 kilograms (462.97 lb) – ultra-lightweight construction in the extreme. The fully-enclosed diffuser underbody and the rear spoiler that slides out automatically help ensure that the R8 generates downforce at high speeds.

The key element of the interior is the monoposto, a large arc sweeping around the dashboard instruments. The relatively long wheelbase of 2.65 meters (8.69 ft) allows for generous interior space. There is space for two golf bags behind the seats, and the luggage compartment under the front hatch offers an additional 100 liters (3.53 cu ft) of storage capacity. The R8 5.2 FSI quattro comes standard wîth Fine Nappa leather appointments, a Bang & Olufsen sound system, and the navigation system plus. The optional bucket seats from the Audi exclusive range exude concentrated racing style.

Drive

Two high-tech engines are available for the Audi R8. Both reflect the wealth of expertise which helped to fuel Audi’s numerous racing triumphs. The V8 and the V10 combine FSI gasoline direct injection wîth dry sump lubrication and a high-revving concept. Both captivate wîth their power, their responsiveness and their musical sound. The eight-cylinder unit launches the R8 from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 4.6 seconds en route to a top speed of 302 km/h (187.65 mph). The V10 is a touch faster, wîth a time of just 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 316 km/h (196.35 mph).

Engine

The engines’ power flows to either a six-speed manual transmission or the R tronic controlled in this case via either a joystick on the center console or paddles on the §teering wheel. The automatic transmission changes gears extremely fast, and the launch control program enables the Audi R8 to make stunningly fast starts wîth perfectly controlled slip. The quattro permanent all-wheel drive is tailored to the mid-engine concept wîth a rear-biased axle load distribution, sending roughly 85 percent of the power to the rear wheels in the standard distribution. The heart of the system is a viscous coupling at the front axle, which can transfer up to 30 percent of the torque to the front within milliseconds, if needed.

Chassis

The chassis of the Audi R8 is just as well suited for blasting through corners as it is for casual cruising. Aluminum double wishbones locate the wheels up front and at the back. The setup for the R8 wîth V10 engine is somewhat stiffer than for the R8 4.2 FSI. The top model comes standard wîth 19-inch wheels. All four floating brake discs are internally vented and perforated. A total of 24 pistons clamp down on them. The optional carbon fiber-ceramic brakes are extremely lightweight, strong, and durable. The Audi magnetic ride adaptive shock absorber system is standard in the R8 5.2 FSI quattro and an option wîth the V8.

Audi R8 Spyder

The Audi R8 Spyder has its own unique touches. It does not include the storage space behind the seats and sideblades on the flanks. The rear side panels and the large cover over the compartment for the top are made of a carbon-fiber composite. Two cowls extending to the spoiler lip give the long back of the car a powerful profile. Typically Audi, the top is made of cloth, which keeps the total weight and the vehicle’s center of gravity low. It requires little space when open and harmonizes ideally wîth the design line when closed. With the standard hydraulic motor, the soft top opens and closes within 19 seconds, even while driving at speeds up to 50 km/h (31.07 mph). It is perfectly suitable for high-speed driving on the highway and is very quiet.

The separate wind deflector can be installed in just two steps. The heated glass rear window is integrated into the bulkhead separately and can be raised and lowered via a switch. The bulkhead also includes integrated rollover protection. The Spyder’s ASF body is reinforced in key areas, yet weighs just six kilograms (13.23 lb) more than that of the R8 Coupé. The leather seats of the open two-seater are specially pigmented to reduce heating as a result of the sun’s rays. Among the other options is the seatbelt microphone for the hands-free unit, which makes it possible to talk on the phone wîth the top down on the highway. Integrated into the belts are three small microphones; a fourth is mounted on the windshield frame. The seat belt microphone is also available for the R8 Coupé.

For 2008, the Mitsubishi Outlander offers acompelling blend of driven-to-thrill dynamics, bold styling, and five-or seven-passenger versatility. Outlander features the §egmènt’s first flap-fold tailgate for easy loading and several user-technology firsts for the compact SÚV §egmènt. The Outlander is based on a new performance-engineered global platform derived from the foundation of the Mitsubishi Lancer and next-generation Lancer Evolution models. The Outlander LS and XLS models are powered by a new 3.0-liter 220-hp aluminum MIVEC V-6 engine teamed to a six-speed Sportronic® automatic transmission (with magnesium §teering wheel paddle shifters in XLS models).

New for 2008, the Outlander ES model is now powered by an all-new, fuel-efficient 2.4-liter 168-hp aluminum DOHC MIVEC 4-cylinder engine teamed wîth a new Sportronic CVT transmission. A new Outlander Special Edition model combines the economy of the 2.4-liter powertrain wîth upscale amenities and options from the V-6 XLS. Bringing innovation to the §egmènt, the Outlander was the first PZEV V-6 SÚV offered in the Ú.S. All Outlander models for the 2008 – the value-minded 2.4 ES, the well equipped 3.0 LS and the sport/luxury 3.0 XLS and 2.4 Special Edition – come standard wîth front-wheel drive and Active Stability and Traction Control (ASTC).

All are available wîth an optional electronically controlled 4-wheel drive system – All-Wheel Control (AWC). Mitsubishi’s All-Wheel Control philosophy for Outlander combines sophisticated electronically controlled 4-wheel drive wîth ASTC and a tuned 4-wheel independent suspension, plus an aluminum roof that lowers the center of gravity for better handling response. On Outlander XLS and 2.4 Special Edition models, 18-in. aluminum-alloy wheels are standard. The versatile second row seat includes independently reclining 60/40 split fold-and-tumble seat backs. On XLS models, the standard underfloor-stowable compact third row seat folds flat into the floor when not needed. When lowered, the flap-fold tailgate can also serve as a seat for outdoor activities, wîth a capacity of 440 lbs. In all Outlander models, overall cargo volume behind the front seats measures 72.6 cu. ft.

Standard safety features for all Outlander models include an advanced dual front air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) wîth occupant sensors, front seat-mounted side-impact air bags and side curtain air bags (front and second row), plus energy-absorbing head protection interior pillars, an anti-lock braking system (ABS) wîth electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), and a tire pressure monitor system (TPMS). The standard FAST (Freehand Advanced Security Transmitter) Key entry system on Outlander Special Edition, LS and XLS models allows passive vehicle unlocking and engine start/stop by carrying the remote control.

Price: $19,990 – 25,210.
Invoice: $19,050 – 23,765.

High-tech options include a HDD 30-gigabyte navigation system wîth music server; a 650-watt (max.) Rockford-Fosgate® Premium Audio system wîth digital signal processing (std. on SE); SIRIÚS® satellite radio wîth six month pre-paid subscription; hands-free calling through Bluetooth® wireless technology, and an accessory DVD rear seat entertainment system wîth a nine-inch wide-format LCD screen. The navigation system now features Diamond Lane Guidance, an industry-first development that can include HOV (high-occupancy vehicle) lane information wîth directions.

Room

The next-generation Outlander is built on a 105.1-in. wheelbase that enables generous second-row legroom. A wide track, in addition to aiding in vehicle stability, also helps to increase hiproom. Careful attention to packaging the multi-link rear suspension, the fuel tank and spare tire enabled Mitsubishi to give the Outlander a lower cargo floor (23.6 in.) than in most competitors. Step-in is easy and car-like, yet Outlander provides a generous 8.5 inches of minimum ground clearance, which is more than most competitors. The 2008 Outlander offers ample room for five, or seven wîth an underfloor-stowable compact third row seat (XLS models) that folds flat into the floor when not needed. Five-seat models feature an under-floor storage compartment. The second-row seat features both a 60/40 split seatback and a 60/40 split seat cushion to balance customers’ needs for utility, passenger room and comfort.

Seats
The Outlander’s sporty design DNA is carried inside, where the deeply contoured front bucket seats and motorcycle-style instrument panel gauges suggest ‘sports car’ more than sport-utility. All models feature as standard premium fabric seats that combine a suede-style knit and sporty mesh. The 2008 models gain redesigned interior door panels wîth cloth inserts for 2008, wîth new chrome door handles for XLS. The Outlander XLS models offer an optional luxury package that features high-quality leather seating and heated front seats. Seats in the new Outlander were designed to provide improved comfort, especially for long-distance drives (or sitting in traffic for long periods). In ES and LS models, the driver’s seat features an easy-to-use pump-type height adjuster. The adjuster raises the whole seat cushion, not just the front or back, through a generous 1.8-in. range. .

Given the Outlander’s handling capability, Mitsubishi used front seats that are more like those in a sport sedan than an SÚV. The seats’ substantial bolstering gives the driver and front passenger the feeling of sitting in the seats rather than on them. The combination of the Outlander’s flat cornering performance and the sporty, comfortable seats help eliminate the top-heavy feel that even some car-based compact SÚVs can exhibit. The five-passenger Outlander models offer 39.6 in. of legroom, which is comparable to some larger SÚVs and sedans. The seven-passenger Outlander XLS models provide 36.8 in. of second-row legroom. The second-row seat cushions in three-row models independently offer a 3.15-in. fore/aft slide range to enable optimizing passenger room or cargo room as needed. In addition, the seatbacks also recline independently, allowing second-row passengers to tailor their own comfort.

What the passengers can’t see helps reduce what they hear. Strategic use of sound insulation materials includes a soft material behind the dash panel and inside the floor console. Blown foam is used as floor spacer material over a broad area, not just at seat mounts, resulting in a flatter, more uniform floor surface. With its hollow core, the material is lightweight, absorbs noise and serves as heat insulation, as well. The carpeting features a molded one-piece base material and non-phenol felt to seal snugly to the floor. Rear fender wells contain acoustic splash shields, and an outer panel stiffener is used in the cargo area floor.

Cargo Versatility

To expand cargo capacity and provide a flat load floor, the second-row seat backs fold forward and then the seats can be tumbled forward into the foot wells. Operation is easy – lower the headrests (no need to remove them), and then the seat will fold, slide and tumble forward in one easy motion. The second row seat incorporates a ‘why doesn’t everybody do that?’ feature: when returning stowed seats to the seating position, releasing the tumble locks activates two small lamps on the seat bottoms, illuminating the area behind the interior to aid operation in the dark or to light an exit path for third-row passengers. The lights turn off after 10 seconds.

The second row outer seats are fitted wîth the LATCH system (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren), wîth anchors on the seats rather than the body, enabling the customer to slide the second-row seat holding the child seat to the preferred position. On third-row models, the third-row seat easily unfolds from the cargo floor: the seatback is raised first, then the headrests, followed by folding down the seat cushion. The thin profile of the third-row seat enables under-floor stowage without the seat protruding into the cargo area. The Outlander carries its spare tire underneath the vehicle, a location that aids weight distribution, and therefore handling.

Inner Space

Overall cargo volume behind the front seats measures 72.6 cu. ft.. With the second row seats up, cargo room measures 39.0 cu. ft., and 13.0 cu. ft. behind the third row seats on XLS models. The Outlander will carry two bicycles inside wîth their front wheels removed. Rear utility bars (XLS) built into the cargo area side walls, and four tie-down hooks, make it easy to secure large items or bicycles. The utility bars can serve as assist grips when passengers are using the compact third-row seat.

Body

Studying real-world compact SÚV usage convinced Mitsubishi to take steps to reduce the cost of repairing minor body damage. For example, the front bumper covers were divided into several parts in areas that are likely to be scratched or scraped, and painted in base colors. In front, the lower bumper fascia parts can be replaced without removing the rest of the bumper. The bumper extension can be replaced by itself if damaged, and all the lower parts use a color that helps to conceal small scratches. The rear bumper is likewise a multi-piece design, wîth side pieces that can be replaced independently of the others. The rocker panel cover also uses colors that can help hide small scratches.

Quality

It’s not enough to have great traction in poor weather or road conditions – you have to be able to see where you’re going. The Outlander helps provide a clear view in rainy conditions wîth aero-blade windshield wipers that use oncoming air to evenly distribute contact pressure along the blade. The wiper motor is upgraded over the previous model to provide 40 percent greater torque, improving wiper performance in snow.

Equipment

Generous standard equipment in Outlander ES includes: Active Stability and Traction Control (ASTC); air conditioning; cabin air filter; ambient lighting monitor; cruise control; power windows, locks and mirrors; engine immobilizer and anti-theft alarm system; keyless entry, and a powerful audio system wîth AM/FM/CD/MP3 playback capability and six speakers. An optional Convenience Package for the Outlander ES adds a number of exterior and interior enhancements, including: color-keyed door handles and side view mirrors; roof rails; rear privacy glass; 16-inch alloy wheels; §teering wheel remote audio switches; leather-wrapped §teering wheel and shift knob; a driver’s seatback pocket; two additional 12-volt accessory outlets (one in cockpit, one in cargo area), and floor mats.

The manual climate controls are electronic for easy use and a high quality feel. Eight fan speeds give the customer more control than other manual systems generally offer. A standard clean air filter protects the interior of the HVAC unit from foreign items, (dry leaves, etc.), removes dust and pollen, and improves air quality in the cabin. The Outlander LS model, in addition to stepping up to V-6 power, includes all of the ES standard and Convenience Package items, along wîth a Bluetooth® cell phone-ready pre-wire switch. The Bluetooth system itself is available as an accessory on both the ES and LS models. Outlander XLS models add 18-inch alloy wheels; Sportronic® magnesium §teering wheel shifter paddles; underfloor-stowable compact third row seat; automatic climate control system; hands-free Bluetooth® cellular phone interface system wîth voice recognition; fog lights, and cargo area utility bars.

The 2.4-liter Outlander Special Edition features even more standard equipment than the XLS V-6 models, adding the Rockford-Fosgate Premium Audio system as well as unique interior trim. Exclusive to the Outlander 2.4 SE are new interior door panel trim and chrome door handles, chrome-accented exterior door handles and side sills, mesh fabric seats wîth leather bolsters, and high-contrast instrument gauges. Some Outlander SE features will be available on other Outlander models for 2009. The Sun and Sound option package for Outlander XLS includes a power glass sunroof and the Rockford-Fosgate audio system wîth SIRIÚS Satellite Radio. The Luxury Package available for Outlander XLS adds leather seating surfaces (front and second rows), heated front seats, auto-leveling xenon HID headlamps and a power-adjustable driver’s seat. The Outlander XLS also offers an optional hard disc drive (HDD) navigation system wîth Diamond Lane Guidance and a music server function; this system is available as an accessory on the ES and LS models.
