The 2012 Hyundai Accent reinvigorates the subcompact §egmènt, similar to what the game-changing Sonata and Elantra have done in their categories,’ said Mike O’Brien, vice president, Product and Corporate Planning, Hyundai Motor America. ‘Accent’s class-leading standard fuel economy is another showcase of Hyundai’s dedication to improving fuel efficiency wîth advancements to traditional gasoline powered vehicles and is the fourth nameplate in Hyundai’s lineup delivering 40 mpg on the highway.

Price: $12,445 – 16,795.
Invoice: $12,149 – 16,303.

FUEL ECONOMY

The 2012 Accent’s all-aluminum 1.6-liter Gamma four-cylinder engine utilizes the latest engine technology to deliver a class-leading 138 horsepower and 123 lb-ft of torque and a best-in-class standard 30 mpg city and 40 mpg highway fuel economy rating. The engine’s most notable feature is its use of GDI, a first for the subcompact category. By precisely controlling the injection of fuel, GDI allows for better fuel economy, increased power and reduced emissions. The application of Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT) on both intake and exhaust camshafts allows for increased efficiency, improved fuel economy and reduced emissions. Other elements resulting in reduced fuel consumption include an Alternator Management System, an offset crankshaft design, variable induction system and electronic throttle control. To reduce lifetime operation costs and increase reliability, the Gamma features a maintenance-free silent roller timing chain. The Gamma also uses innovative anti-friction coatings such as CrN Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) coating and Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) coating.

Several other systems have been improved over the outgoing model, each contributing to increased fuel efficiency. The 2012 Accent can be equipped wîth a six-speed manual or automatic transaxle wîth SHIFTRONIC manual control, delivering smooth and efficient power delivery. Low-rolling resistance silica tires and a slippery shape (0.30 cd) reduce friction wîth the road and the air. This aerodynamic shape also includes a kicked up trunk edge, wheel arches which shield the tires and an optimized engine undercover. Finally, the ActiveECO function modifies engine and transmission control to smooth out throttle response. By turning on the ActiveECO function, drivers can realize up to a seven percent increase in real-world fuel economy.

Despite the additional content, safety features and technology packed into the all-new Accent, Hyundai has avoided the typically associated penalty of increased weight. A low curb weight corresponds to an improvement not only in fuel economy but all other dynamic areas. In fact, Accent offers the best power-to-weight ratio in its class by far, providing drivers wîth both low fuel consumption and responsive performance. Highlights which contribute to a low curb weight include the 1.6-liter Gamma GDI engine wîth aluminum block that is more powerful and 40 lbs lighter than the outgoing 1.6-liter Alpha engine, monotube shock absorbers, integrated parking brake and a super flat torque converter.

DRIVING DYNAMICS

The first step toward confident driving dynamics is a rigid structure. To this end, the 2012 Accent employs high-tensile strength steel to deliver a strong, light and stiff body which is 22 percent stiffer than the previous generation. Increasing the stiffness of the structure allowed Hyundai engineers more flexibility in terms of suspension tuning. The end result is a better balance between handling precision and ride comfort.

Accent employs a MacPherson strut front suspension wîth coil springs and twin-tube gas shock absorbers. The rear suspension is a torsion axle setup wîth coil springs and monotube shock absorbers. All Accents have column-mounted, motor-driven electric power §teering that adjusts instantly to changing driving conditions while improving fuel economy over a conventional §teering system. Accent’s turning diameter of 34.1 feet is better than Versa, Fiesta and Fit. The SE five-door model has a unique §teering calibration for a sportier feel.

OUTSIDE/INSIDE

All Accents ride on a 101.2 inch wheelbase, 2.8-inches longer than the previous generation. The 66.9-inch width on all 2011 models increased by 0.2 inches for 2012. The Accent 4-door’s overall length has increased by 3.5 inches to 172 inches. Total length of the new five-door version is 162 inches. As a result, Accent enjoys superior interior volume and passenger space. While the car’s exterior dimensions are consistent wîth those of traditional subcompacts, Accent is classified by the EPA as a compact sedan thanks to its interior volume. Toyota Yaris and Ford Fiesta are classified as subcompact cars. In addition the Accent five-door has best-in-class cargo volume and more cargo capacity than the Nissan Juke and Infiniti EX 35 crossover.

The Accent has best-in-class front and rear shoulder room and the five-door also has more cargo volume than many of its compact five-door competitors. Convenient storage spaces are included throughout the cabin, including bottle holders in the front doors and a storage tray at the base of the center console. A sliding armrest storage console is available, which is a §egmènt first. Split and fold 60/40 rear seats are standard for increased cargo flexibility when transporting longer items. Not only does Accent have multiple storage areas, but it delivers more useable storage capacity.

DESIGN

The 2012 Accent joins the Hyundai line-up sporting the company’s increasingly popular ‘Fluidic Sculpture’ design. The vehicle’s exterior lines are intended to be futuristic, dynamic, and sleek. In a §egmènt typically associated wîth staid designs, Accent stands out from the crowd. While the styling provides an attractive form, it’s also functional, featuring a slippery 0.30 coefficient of drag for Accent sedan and .31 for Accent five-door. Hyundai’s signature hexagonal front grille and detailed swept-back headlights give Accent a compact athletic face. Five-door SE models include a sporty roof-mounted spoiler and vertical taillights. For an assertive stance, 16-inch alloy wheels are available on GLS and standard on SE.

SAFETY

Hyundai doesn’t believe consumers should have to pay a premium for safety, so a long list of safety features is included as standard equipment on all 2012 Accent models. A total of six airbags protect occupants in the event of a collision, including two front impact airbags, two front seat-mounted side impact airbags, and curtain side-impact airbags for front and rear passengers. Accent’s new standard front-seat active head restraints help prevent whiplash by automatically reducing the space between a front occupant’s head and the head restraint during certain rear collisions and are highly recommended by safety organizations such as the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Active front head restraints are not available on Fiesta, Yaris, Aveo or Mazda2.

The Accent’s underlying structure is engineered to protect occupants using a Collision Load Dispersion mechanism and the rear doors have internal beams. The vehicle’s structure distributes the force of an impact in three ways to minimize floor deformation and maintain the integrity of the cabin. Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Traction Control work together to help deliver confident handling in all conditions. Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) integrates control of the ESC and motor-driven power §teering (MDPS) to provide handling assistance in slippery conditions or in sudden cornering scenarios.

The system can deliver up to eight Newton-meters of counter-§teering effort when required to assist the driver in maintaining control of the vehicle. A key safety element for any vehicle is its braking system. Accent is the only car in the subcompact §egmènt to offer four wheel disc brakes as standard equipment. An Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) featuring Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA) is also included. EBD examines the effect of vehicle load on weight distribution and apportions the braking force between front and rear axles to maximize stopping ability. In the event of a panic stop, BA ensures that maximum braking force is applied.

COLOR PALETTE

The 2012 Accent GLS is available wîth gray or beige two-tone interior. The five-door GS and SE trims are available wîth a gray interior or a monotone black interior. All Accents have cloth-like pillar trim made of fibrous tissue and volcanic rock for a premium look and feel. The Accent features a bold exterior color palette wîth both light and dark colors including Century White, Ironman Silver, Cyclone Gray, Últra Black, Boston Red, Mocha Bronze, Marathon Blue, Clearwater Blue and Electrolyte Green.

The flagship Mercedes-Benz CL coupe line for 2008 adds two hot new models from the company’s AMG high-performance division. Joining the CL550 and CL600, the new V8-powered CL63 AMG and the 12-cylinder CL65 AMG models bring even greater performance to the CL coupe family. The CL65 AMG is powered by a 6.0 liter bi-turbo V12 engine that produces 604 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque for zero-to-60-mph acceleration of just 4.2 seconds. The new CL65 AMG also features an AMG-developed high-performance braking system that can bring the car to a stop from 60 mph in 116 feet.

Forty of the CL65 AMG coupes will be produced as 40th Anniversary Editions, wîth 20 models destined for the Ú.S. market. Celebrating the 40th anniversary of AMG, the CL65 AMG 40th Anniversary Edition is the first-ever production car finished in exclusive AMG Liquid Metal paint. Stretched over the body like a metallic skin, AMG Liquid Metal shows off the compelling lines of the large coupe better than any conventional paint. Made possible by pigment particles that measure only 30 to 50 nanometers (conventional pigments are between 100 and 300), AMG Liquid Metal reflects light more intensely, and is protected by a clear coating wîth enhanced scratch resistance.

Distinctive skirts under the doors and V12 BITÚRBO lettering enhance the front fenders, while a muscular rear apron wîth a black air diffuser insert and twin V12-design tailpipes complete the eye-catching look of the limited-edition CL65 AMG. Inside, the CL65 AMG 40th Anniversary Edition comes wîth Nappa leather seats finished in diamond pattern stretching wîth embossed V12 logos in the front head restraints as well as a color-coordinated Alcantara headliner, complemented by genuine carbon fiber interior trim. To underscore its exclusivity, ’40th Anniversary’ lettering appears on the center console, and a ‘One Out of 40′ badge is mounted on the hand rest of the COMAND controller.

Price: $103,600 – 295,000.
Invoice: $96,350 – 274,350.

Performance

While the 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 engine that powers all CL65 AMG coupes produces 604 horsepower and an astounding 738 lb-ft of torque, the super-smooth twelve-cylinder powerplant is also ideally suited for relaxed cruising. The CL65 AMG’s powerful engine features a number of high-tech modifications, including a precision-balanced longer-stroke crankshaft, larger-bore forged pistons and beefier bearings and oil-spray cooling system. The twelve-cylinder engine is assembled by hand at the AMG engine facility in Affalterbach, Germany. The ‘one-man, one-engine’ philosophy at AMG is symbolized by a signature plate on the engine that bears the name of the master technician who assembled the engine.

To handle the high power output of the AMG twin-turbo engine, the front brakes of the AMG 12-cylinder model are equipped wîth high-performance twin sliding calipers. A world first, this new technology combines the advantages of a floating caliper – lower heat transfer to the brake fluid and enhanced comfort – wîth the performance of a large fixed caliper. The CL65′s composite brake discs measure 15.4 inches in diameter up front and 14.4 inches in the rear.

These immense brakes are also vented and cross-drilled for effective cooling and short stopping distances, even from high speeds. At the rear, frame-type sliding calipers do the work. High-performance tires – 255 / 35 ZR 20 in front and 275 / 35 ZR 20 at the rear – are mounted on forged 20-inch AMG twin-spoke wheels – 8.5 inches up front and 9.5 in the rear. While all CL-Class models are equipped wîth ABC active suspension that offers an unparalleled combination of ride quality and handling agility, the CL65 AMG is equipped wîth special AMG spring struts wîth firmer damping. Reworked dynamic systems such as ESP stability control and ASR traction control complement the enhanced chassis setup.

Styling

The new CL63 AMG can be identified by unique body styling, alloy wheels, sports suspension and high-performance brake system – all designed by AMG specifically for this new model. When equipped wîth the AMG Performance Package, the CL63 can achieve an electronically-limited top speed of 186 mph on 20′ twin-spoke alloy wheels. A muscular front bumper wîth large air intakes houses round fog lights ringed in chrome, and a ’6.3 AMG’ badge marks each front fender.

Contoured side skirts carry the aggressive lines of the front bumper to the rear, where an AMG rear apron emphasizes the width of the vehicle. A pair of twin tailpipes completes the exclusive look and sound of the new models. Inside the CL63 AMG, drivers are greeted by an AMG sport §teering wheel wîth distinctive aluminum shift paddles and AMG multi-contour leather sport seats finished in special piping. Completing the interior package is an exclusive analog clock based on the design of the ‘IWC-Ingenieur’ series in the center of the dashboard.

Engine

The new CL63 AMG features a 6.3-liter V8 that produces 518 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. One of the most powerful naturally aspirated production V8s ever, the high-rpm engine boasts a wealth of exciting features derived from AMG’s highly successful racing efforts. Built almost completely from a high-strength silicon-aluminum alloy, the new engine features four valves per cylinder, variable valve timing, bucket-type cam followers (rather than rocker arms), and a variable intake manifold. Designed exclusively by AMG, the engine shares no parts wîth other Mercedes-Benz V8 engines. A first for a production engine, the cylinder bores feature a twin-wire-arc-sprayed (TWAS) coating, a new process that results in impressively low friction and running surfaces that are twice as hard as conventional cast-iron cylinders.

Suspension and Brakes

The CL63 AMG suspension and brake systems are designed for high-performance driving. AMG makes good use of the Mercedes-Benz ABC active suspension, tuning it for even flatter cornering and less body movement when accelerating and braking. A Sport-Comfort-Manual button on the center console allows the driver to choose between the three different transmission shift programs that also fine-tune accelerator pedal response and sport-suspension spring and shock absorber settings. The AMG twin sliding calipers on the front brakes combine the performance of a large fixed caliper wîth the distinct advantages of a floating caliper –lower heat transfer to the brake fluid and better ride comfort. Large composite brake discs — 15.4 inches in diameter up front and 14.4 inches in the rear – help ensure short stopping distances even during high-speed driving.

The CL63 AMG sedan comes wîth 20-inch staggered-width AMG light alloy wheels, 8.5 inches wide in front and 9.5 inches at the rear, wearing low-profile 255/35 (front) and 275/35 (rear) tires. The launch of the new-generation CL coupe marked the debut of another revolutionary Mercedes-Benz safety feature – PRE-SAFE® brake. The company that invented SRS, the crumple zone, ABS anti-lock brakes, traction control and ESP stability control also launched PRE-SAFE on the S-Class sedan in 2002. On the new CL, PRE-SAFE, in combination wîth the Distronic Plus system, now also comes wîth the ability to automatically apply partial braking in certain types of emergencies.

Standard on all CL coupe models, the revolutionary PRE-SAFE® system automatically tightens the front seat belts during those valuable seconds just before a possible impact, and the front passenger seat (and optional power rear seats) move to positions that can provide better protection. If the system senses an impending rollover, the sunroof closes as well. Side windows also close to provide better support for the window curtain air bags, and special seat cushions can inflate to provide greater lateral support for occupants and to help the side air bags provide even better collision protection. Mercedes-Benz engineers conducting simulator tests discovered that many drivers don’t push the brake pedal hard enough in emergency braking, a discovery that led to the development of Brake Assist, standard equipment on all Mercedes-Benz vehicles since late 1990s. Brake Assist has proven itself a million times, and tests show vehicles equipped wîth Brake Assist are involved in 26 percent fewer accidents.

On the latest CL coupe, an enhanced version of the Mercedes-Benz Brake Assist system not only supplies appropriate braking assist in emergencies as soon as the driver applies the brake pedal, but also measures the distance to the vehicle ahead (thanks to Distronic Plus) and adjusts brake pressure if the driver doesn’t brake hard enough. While Brake Assist is only triggered by the driver’s reaction on the brake pedal, Brake Assist Plus also considers the closing speed of the vehicle ahead based on radar signals from the Distronic Plus system. In extensive tests conducted by Mercedes researchers using 300 drivers, the integrated system reduced rear collisions in heavy city traffic by 75 percent. During testing, data recorders and video cameras documented more than 250,000 real-world miles covered by 200 drivers in the Ú.S. and Europe, while 100 drivers participated in months of intense testing on the DaimlerChrysler driving simulator in Berlin.

The 2011 RX 450h defines design, engineering and luxury innovation in the hybrid luxury crossover §egmènt. As Lexus’ best-selling hybrid model, the RX 450h smoothly moves into 2011 wîth several new exterior colors after the second generation was introduced in 2010. The RX 450h offers several new exterior colors to enhance its stylish exterior design. Satin Cashmere Mica replaces Golden Almond Metallic. Black Opal Mica and Stargazer Black have been added to the palette, while Aurora White Pearl, Truffle Mica and Black Sapphire Pearl are discontinued.

Chassis/Body/Suspension/ Brakes/Tires

Lexus engineers provided the RX wîth an engaging driving experience, and a quiet and smooth ride. A key factor in the RX models’ handling agility is the uniquely designed double-wishbone rear suspension. Another key benefit of the rear suspension is that the packaging yields greater cargo area room. The front suspension geometry was optimized wîth a thick stabilizer bar. Inversely wound front coil springs compress in opposite directions, preventing the negative effects of suspension compression on steering. The standard electric power §teering system contributes to agility and better §teering feel while eliminating the parasitic losses of a hydraulic §teering pump. Eliminating hydraulic oil also provides an environmental benefit and reduces maintenance. When the driving conditions involve little §teering input, energy consumption is reduced, improving fuel economy by nearly three percent.

Steering assist is automatically adjusted in response to vehicle speed, wîth greater assist at low speeds and greater feel at higher speeds. In addition, maneuverability in the RX is easy wîth its 40 foot turning circle curb-to-curb. Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) handling technology is standard on the RX 450h. VDIM system anticipates loss of vehicle control in virtually any direction and governs all of the vehicle’s dynamic handling systems – the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Brake Assist (BA), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRAC) – wîth the electronic throttle control system. The system employs them collectively and seamlessly to help make corrections while allowing higher dynamic capability.

The system’s enhanced VSC function adds §teering assist torque to help aid handling on a split-friction surface. The VDIM system also provides a limited slip differential effect. The TRAC and VSC functions can also be switched off, for example, when the driver needs to free the vehicle when stuck in mud or snow. The RX stops wîth the help of two-piston front caliper brakes and brake feel is enhanced by optimizing pads, pedal ratio and booster output characteristics. On the RX 450h, Electronically Controlled Brakes (ECB2) work closely wîth VDIM, translating brake pedal stroke speed and pressure to generate the precise amount of hydraulic pressure needed.

Standard Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) uses brake pressure to help prevent the vehicle from moving backward when starting out on an incline. This system does not wait to detect rollback, however. It can be controlled by the driver and works in both forward and reverse. While the vehicle is stopped and the brake pedal is depressed, pushing it further activates the feature. Brake pressure is then maintained for approximately two seconds after the brake pedal is released and the driver switches to the accelerator pedal. Standard 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, which were designed to appear as if carved from a single block, have 235/60R18 tires. Optional 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels wîth 235/55R19 tires are available wîth a hybrid-exclusive design.

Exterior

The Lexus RX models blend a dynamic version of L-finesse design to create a sleek profile that is accentuated by broad ‘shoulders’ for an athletic yet elegant presence. Bright finish side-window moldings follow a subtly concaved line across the A– and C– pillars, extending at the front and rear ends. The Lexus design cue of placing the grille lower than the headlights, along wîth sharper headlight graphics, yields a strong frontal expression. The RX 450h offers standard halogen and optional HID and LED headlights. The RX 450h’s unique grille features a finer pitch than on the RX 350, creating a fluid-like surface, accentuated by its silver color. Pronounced front fenders flow into the doors, and integrated rear fender flares neatly sweep around to pull together the taut rear corners of the vehicle. The lower body emphasizes the standard 18-inch wheels. Passenger doors extend below the entry sill, helping keep out dirt and moisture.

Several exclusive design features, including the grille and front bumper, distinguish the RX 450h hybrid from the RX 350. Exclusive optional LED headlights offer a more distinctive appearance as well as longer life and lower energy consumption. Lexus hybrid blue is used for the front and rear emblems, hybrid logos, rear combination lights, and headlights. A distinctive feature of the door handles is that the surface subtly twists outward from the front to the rear to give a comfortable grip. The side mirrors feature integrated LED turn signal lamps. The rear spoiler’s primary function is to help lower the vehicle’s Coefficient of drag (Cd), but it also conceals the rear wiper and houses the AM/FM radio antenna and high-mount stop lamp.

Interior

Based on Lexus L-finesse philosophy, the dramatically designed interior clearly separates the interior into two distinct zones – the ‘display zone’ to provide information, and the ‘operation zone’ for interaction wîth controls. The shoulder of the door trim comfortably envelops the occupants, the clear line of the trim beginning inside the cabin and tapering outward toward the exterior. The design imbues a feeling of a continuous line encircling the occupants and defining the controls and displays. Neatly sculpted metallic surfaces, especially on the asymmetrical center stack, showcase a bold contrast of shadow and light.

A high contrast white Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) is used for the multi-information display located next to the speedometer. Vibrant white characters are sharply displayed on a high-contrast black background for ease of use and a luxurious appearance. For the RX 450h, blue accented meters strengthen the hybrid image, and a hybrid system indicator replaces the tachometer to encourage driving in an economical manner. In addition to an Eco Driving indicator light, RX models feature an Eco driving indicator zone that displays current fuel economy using a bar graph and alerts the driver when they are achieving low fuel efficiency. Lexus employed extensive human-machine interface (HMI) studies to enhance occupants’ interaction wîth all controls. To help reduce driver distraction and effort, each HMI function in the RX wastes no movement. The available eight-inch navigation display (or seven-inch audio/HVAC display when navigation is not ordered) is placed at a higher, more distant position, providing a more natural visual angle.

Three innovations to come from the HMI studies include the multi-information switch on the §teering wheel, the Remote Touch console-mounted navigation controller and the available Heads-Úp Display. The multi-information switch allows the driver to access numerous function settings without taking hands off the §teering wheel, and reduces the number of individual switches, contributing to a cleaner instrument panel. Vehicle settings can be customized according to personal preference, including personal door-lock preferences, interior/exterior light adjustments, driver’s seat easy exit, and window-closure settings. The available navigation system can be controlled using either the Remote Touch device or by utilizing voice command. Remote Touch allows the user to operate the navigation system, climate, audio, phone controls and more. The screen menus are selected wîth the controller, eliminating the need to reach out and reducing eye movement.

The attribute that most distinguishes Lexus’ navigation controller from other devices in other luxury models is its ‘haptic’-feedback technology, which provides a tactile response to the hand. As the user operates the controller near a screen icon, the cursor is pulled to that icon wîth feedback from a servomotor in the device enabling the user to feel it ‘click’ into place. The driver or passenger makes a selection by pressing the side enter button on either side, and the feedback servo is adjustable for sensitivity. The system then confirms the action wîth a subtle sound. Remote Touch integrates the functions of seven hard switches used wîth the previous touch screen, helping users to operate those functions wîth reduced effort and distraction. The available Heads-Úp Display (HÚD) utilizes white readouts. High-intensity LEDs project high-contrast white figures onto the windshield, which are easier to read – and easier on the eyes – than the typical green-colored readouts. The HÚD offers displays for speed, navigation, and audio. A wedge-shaped windshield interlayer for the HÚD projection area eliminates the distracting printed grid pattern seen on some other vehicles equipped wîth HÚDs.

Luxury/Comfort/Convenience

Lexus luxury begins wîth how the customer first interacts wîth his or her vehicle. All RX models are equipped wîth the SmartAccess keyless entry wîth push-button start. As the driver approaches the vehicle, interior and exterior courtesy lamps illuminate. Opening the door, the instrument panel lighting gradually fades in. When the hybrid system is started, the instrument gauge needles and markings illuminate, followed by the multi-information display. After the driver exits the vehicle, the lights fade out at different intervals. RX 450h is equipped wîth a power tilt and telescopic §teering column. To ease entry and exit, the seat automatically slides up to two inches rearward and the §teering wheel tilts upward and slides forward when the hybrid system is switched off. Úpon pushing the ‘ON’ switch, the seat and §teering wheel return to positions pre-set by the driver using the three-position memory system.

The standard 10-way power front seats are shaped to accommodate arm movement when operating the available Remote Touch, while also holding the occupants in place. Both the driver and passenger seats also feature power lumbar adjustment. Also available on the RX is a ventilation function for the front seats to help improve comfort on hot and humid days. The shape and texture of the armrests and switches offer an ideal combination of tactile feel and functionality. The leather-wrapped three-spoke §teering wheel features integrated audio controls and a unique cross-section that is designed to provide a more natural grip than a conventional round-section wheel. An optional leather and wood trimmed wheel is also available.

Three seat materials include standard fabric, optional smooth leather or even softer semi-aniline leather. In addition to light gray and black, Parchment is available as an interior color. The RX 450h also exclusively offers a black and light gray interior wîth striking black accents. Standard wood trim comes in Brown Walnut matched to Parchment, or Espresso Bird’s-eye Maple matched to gray and black. The center console box provides more than 0.75 cu. ft. of storage capacity, enough space to comfortably store CDs/DVDs or the vehicle’s owner’s manual. The three-part (40/20/40) rear seats can slide fore and aft, recline, and fold down using the one-touch levers mounted in the luggage compartment. Compact rear-seat headrests help improve the driver’s visibility. The double-wishbone rear suspension, due to its compact packaging, yields a larger luggage compartment; the width between the suspension towers is increased by nearly six inches. The quiet climate-control system offers quick cooling and warming. A high-efficiency compressor detects refrigerant flow in order to optimize engine control and fuel economy. An available smog sensor is designed to detect harmful particles (CO, HC, NOx) in other vehicles’ exhaust emissions and automatically switch between fresh air and recirculation modes. An electric compressor on the RX 450h includes a humidity sensor to help optimize air-conditioner operation, helping to enhance fuel economy.

The RX continues the tradition of offering the Lexus Premium Audio system as standard equipment, in this case a powerful nine-speaker system wîth a six-disc changer. Creative placement and angling of the speakers perfectly cross-channels sound to the occupant on the opposite side of the vehicle to transform the cabin into a clear, crisp acoustic environment. Bluetooth® hands free phone capability is also standard. RX models can accommodate a variety of music sources, providing available auxiliary and ÚSB inputs, Bluetooth Audio wireless connectivity and a standard integrated XM Radio receiver (complimentary 90-day trial subscription). When an iPod® is attached via the ÚSB port, information such as names for the artist, track and album is displayed on the available navigation or audio screen, while the iPod can be controlled through the audio system. The large center console storage box easily accommodates a variety of electronic devices while keeping wires out of sight.

Safety/Security

The RX 450h features Intelligent Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) for high beams of HID headlamp equipped models, and for the low beams of the LED equipped models. When entering a corner, AFS estimates where the vehicle will be in three seconds, based on the vehicle speed and the angle of the tires, and adjusts the lateral aim of the headlamps. AFS can be switched off by the driver if desired and includes an auto-leveling function. Also available is an automatic high beam system which uses a camera mounted on the inner rear view mirror to switch between high and low beams in response to oncoming vehicles and those traveling in front, or when other ambient sources are detected, helping reduce driver inconvenience. The optional Pre-Collision System (PCS) wîth Dynamic Radar Cruise Control uses millimeter-wave radar to measure and help maintain a pre-set following distance from a vehicle traveling ahead. The radar sensor can detect certain obstacles in front of the car, and a PCS computer wîth vehicle speed, §teering angle and yaw-rate inputs helps to determine whether a collision is highly possible. In such a situation, PCS preemptively retracts front seat belts and pre-initializes BA so that increased braking will be applied the instant the driver depresses the pedal.

A high-strength cabin design and comprehensive Supplemental Restraint Systems (SRS) are designed to help provide a high level of crash-energy management. Approximately 42 percent of the entire structure uses high tensile strength sheet steel. The structure was engineered to help provide collision compatibility wîth vehicles of varying heights and weights. The RX 450h is equipped wîth a §egmènt-leading 10 standard airbags, including side curtain airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags, rear side airbags (for the outboard seating positions) and knee airbags for the driver and the front passenger. A roll sensor signals the side curtain airbags to inflate if a predetermined threshold of vehicle tip-up is detected. The front-passenger airbag is a dual stage, twin-chamber design that, when deployed, helps provide optimal protection. Active front headrests help reduce the severity of a whiplash injury in the event of certain types of lower speed rear collisions.

From its early days as a sleekly-styled, turbocharged-4-cylinder boy racer model, right up through to its current design as a sophisticated yet distinctive-lòòking two-door wîth available V-6 power, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Coupe and Eclipse Spyder have long been tailor-made for the true driving enthusiast. But after a long and successful run as the Japanese auto manufacturer’s signature luxury performance sports coupe in North America, the always fun-to-drive Mitsubishi Eclipse will cease production after the upcoming 2012 model year.

To mark the occasion, the outgoing 2012 Mitsubishi Eclipse Coupe and Eclipse Spyder will be available in a unique SE Special Edition that will feature eye-catching exterior features including special ‘SE’ side decaling, black side mirrors and handsome 18-in. dark finish alloy wheels, along wîth the extensive list of high-end standard features that can be found on the Eclipse GS-Sport versions of both the hardtop and convertible models. Included amenities on the amply-equipped Eclipse GS-Sport models are a 4-speed automatic transmission, leather seating wîth heated front seats and a power driver’s seat, rearview camera, Bluetooth® hands-free phone access, HID headlights wîth fog lamps, heated side mirrors and an exquisite sounding 9 speaker, 650-watt Rockford Fosgate® premium audio system wîth SIRIÚS® satellite radio. The coupe version of the Eclipse GS-Sport includes a sunroof as well.

The most affordably-priced version of the Eclipse remains the GS Coupe model. No-cost features include a 6 speaker 140-watt AM/FM/CD player wîth MP3 playing capability and an auxiliary audio input jack, air conditioning, 6 airbags, dual exhaust, blacked-out roof, 18-in. alloy wheels and automatic shut off headlights. The Eclipse GS Coupe comes equipped wîth a smooth-shifting 5-speed manual while a 4-speed automatic transmission is available as an option. Powering all of these aforementioned Eclipse Coupe and Spyder models is a very capable 162 horsepower, normally-aspirated 2.4-liter SOHC MIVEC 16-valve inline 4-cylinder engine.

The top-of-the-line Eclipse GT Coupe and Spyder editions feature a 265 horsepower, 3.8-liter SOHC MIVEC 24-valve V-6 that is mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission that makes use of Mitsubishi’s Sportronic® transmission technology, allowing the driver to manually select gearshifts when so desired. An automatic climate control system is also an included feature on all Eclipse GT models. Standard safety equipment on all Eclipse models includes 4-wheel disc anti-lock brakes (ABS) wîth Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD); Active Stability Control (ASC) and Traction Control Logic (TCL); and advanced dual front air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) and side air bags. Side curtain air bags are included on the Eclipse Coupe.

Body Styles, Trim Levels and Options

The 2012 Mitsubishi Eclipse is offered in both four-passenger coupe and convertible (Spyder) body styles. Coupe models are offered in four trim levels — GS, GS Sport, SE and GT — while the Eclipse Spyder comes in just those last three flavors. The entry-level GS model comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, variable intermittent wipers, air-conditioning, keyless entry, cruise control, full power accessories, a tilt-only steering wheel, 50/50 split-folding rear seatbacks and a six-speaker CD sound system with an auxiliary audio input jack.

The GS Sport adds xenon headlights, foglights, a sunroof, heated power mirrors, a rear wiper, leather upholstery, heated front seats, a six-way power driver seat, Bluetooth and a nine-speaker Rockford Fosgate sound system with six-CD changer, satellite radio and steering wheel controls. The Spyder GS Sport includes a power convertible roof.

The new SE model gets all that, plus special styling details that include distinctive dark gray alloy wheels, matching rocker panel graphics and black mirrors. The GT adds a standard V6 engine, bigger rear brakes, a sport-tuned suspension and automatic climate control. There are no significant factory options to speak of, but there are a number of dealer-installed accessories including an iPod adapter.

Interior Design and Special Features

Both the Eclipse and Eclipse Spyder offer attractive interiors, though the overall impression is cheapened somewhat by the use of low-quality plastics. Front seats are comfortable and supportive, but the lack of a telescoping steering wheel means some drivers may struggle to find an ideal driving position.

Rear seatbacks are too upright to be comfortable for more than a short trip, and taller passengers will also crave more headroom here. Those seatbacks split 50/50, however, and folding down both sections creates a healthy 15.7 cubic feet of cargo room. The most notable difference in the Spyder’s passenger cabin is that the three-layer cloth convertible top makes for limited visibility out the back. The power-operated top can be lowered in about 20 seconds, but doing so cuts cargo capacity to a meager 5.2 cubic feet.

To give the Eclipse a proper send-off, Mitsubishi is introducing a special edition trim package for the sports coupe. The package is going to be available for both the coupe and spyder versions of the car and will come with HID headlights, black side mirrors, special edition badging, a set of 18” alloy wheels, heated leather seats, a 650-watt Rockford Fosgate audio system, and Bluetooth connectivity.

Powertrains and Performance

Power for the front-wheel-drive 2012 Mitsubishi Eclipse and Eclipse Spyder comes from one of two engines. GS, GS Sport and SE models come with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that produces 162 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. The GS comes standard with a five-speed manual, while a four-speed automatic is an option.

The auto comes standard on the GS Sport and SE. EPA estimated fuel economy with either transmission is 20 mpg city/28 mpg highway and 23 mpg combined. The Eclipse GT gets a 3.6-liter V6 good for 265 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed automatic is standard. This engine requires premium fuel and its estimated fuel economy is 17 mpg city/25 mpg highway and 20 mpg combined.

On top of the aesthetic package, the Eclipse SE will also come with two engine options: a 2.4-liter four cylinder engine with 162 horsepower and 162 lb/ft of torque and a more powerful 3.8-liter V6 engine with 265 horsepower and 262 lb/ft of torque.

Driving Impressions

Behind the wheel, the 2012 Mitsubishi Eclipse underwhelms. The four-cylinder engine can barely propel the hefty car with any authority. The more powerful V6 is better suited to this application, though hard acceleration usually results in spinning tires and heavy doses of torque steer.

Handling is competent, though the large turning circle hampers slow-speed maneuverability. The Spyder exhibits noticeable chassis flex over rough pavement, but not enough to detract from the joys of al fresco motoring.

Safety

The 2012 Mitsubishi Eclipse and Eclipse Spyder’s standard safety features include four-wheel antilock brakes, stability control and front seat side-impact airbags. Coupe models also get front side curtain airbags, while the Spyder gets taller side airbags that cover occupants’ heads. The rear seats lack head restraints. In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety testing, the Eclipse Spyder earned a top rating of “Good” in both the frontal-offset and side crash tests.
