The completely redesigned 2009 Mazda 6 boasts upsized dimensions and powertrains that put it on par with segment leaders, yet it largely retains its distinctive fun-to-drive character.

Introduction

If there’s a moral to the fully redesigned 2009 Mazda 6′s story, it’s that there’s more to life than “zoom-zoom.” The previous-generation Mazda 6 had plenty of it, yet Mazda had a devil of a time getting the buying public to notice. That’s because American drivers typically don’t care so much about how their family sedans behave on winding country roads. What they want is space, safety, reliability, power and style — and while the old 6 looked nice enough, its tight dimensions and lackluster acceleration prevented it from succeeding in an increasingly competitive marketplace.

The new 6 demonstrates that Mazda wasn’t going to make the same mistake twice. Want room to relax? It offers one of the most accommodating cabins of any midsize sedan, with Texas-sized front seats and a backseat fit for 6-footers. Got luggage, or perhaps four sets of golf clubs? The midsize Mazda now features an impressively large 16.6 cubic feet of trunk space. Need power? Mazda’s got you covered with the largest and most powerful V6 in this price bracket, though its fuel economy is disappointing. Want to make a fashion statement? Then you shouldn’t be buying a family sedan in the first place. But as such cars go, we think the new 6 manages to be tautly attractive, particularly from the front, despite its additional 6.1 inches of length and 2.3 inches of width. Unlike the previous model, the 2009 Mazda 6 was engineered specifically for the North American market — and it shows.

It also means added weight, as the enlarged 6 is roughly 150 pounds heavier than its predecessor. Yet you’ll still notice the sporty reflexes that consumers have come to expect from this performance-oriented brand. Body roll is minimal by family-sedan standards, and the steering is light but responsive. The 6 never lets you forget its considerable size, but its well-sorted chassis and light-on-its-feet character at speed puts it second only to the Nissan Altima in the fun-to-drive category.

Price: $18,550 – 28,260.
Invoice: $17,600 – 26,100.

Wait a minute, you’re saying — how could the “zoom-zoom” family sedan fail to be the sportiest car in its class? Three reasons: The Altima’s considerably lighter, its body motions are better controlled and its steering is tighter and more communicative. But so what? As the previous 6 demonstrated (and the Toyota Camry continues to demonstrate), top-notch driving dynamics do not a best-selling family sedan make. What the new 6 offers is the coveted combination of American-style size and power, along with above-average handling for those who care about that sort of thing. True enthusiasts may not find the 6 to their liking — but hey, that’s what the Mazdaspeed 3 is for.

In short, the 2009 Mazda 6 is at or near the head of its class in most respects. As usual, though, we recommend test-driving as many rival models as possible before making your decision, including the Chevrolet Malibu, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Nissan Altima, Subaru Legacy and Toyota Camry. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses, but few can match the 6′s all-around competence and appeal.

Interior Design and Special Features

The 2009 Mazda 6′s control layout is generally intuitive, with all major knobs and buttons clearly labeled and easily manipulated. It’s attractive, too, with red backlighting for the gauges and a sleek center stack sweeping forward toward the windshield, although the odd black-and-silver patterned plastic trim in Touring models and above won’t strike everyone’s fancy. Materials quality is hit-or-miss, as the rich-feeling soft-touch material on the passenger side of the dashboard contrasts with cheap hard stuff on the driver side. The emergency brake also feels a bit chintzy for this price point. The generously proportioned seats are quite comfortable, however, with ample leg- and headroom all around. On the downside, power-adjustable lumbar support is unavailable, and the optional manually adjustable driver-side lumbar support operates via a labor-intensive knob.

In the audio department, the 6′s standard stereo is just adequate, and while the optional Bose system sounds markedly better, it lacks the clarity and rich bass response of the best stereos in this class. There’s better news on the cargo-carrying front, where the 16.6-cubic-foot trunk sets a new standard for family sedans. Moreover, it’s enhanced by upscale strut supports that don’t impinge on the cargo area, and the 60/40-split-folding rear seats add to the 6′s impressive hauling capabilities.

Body Styles, Trim Levels and Options

The 2009 Mazda 6 is a front-wheel-drive midsize sedan. There are seven trim levels: i SV, i Sport, i Touring, i Grand Touring, s Sport, s Touring and s Grand Touring. Models with the i prefix come with the four-cylinder engine, while models with the s prefix come with the V6.

The value leader i SV comes standard with 16-inch steel wheels, a manually height-adjustable driver seat, full power accessories, a six-speaker CD stereo system with steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, air-conditioning and a tilt/telescoping steering column. The i Sport adds cruise control, an auxiliary input jack and keyless entry. The i Touring model steps up the feature content with 17-inch alloy wheels, foglights, a trip computer, a power driver seat, keyless ignition/entry, electroluminescent gauges, black patterned accent pieces and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. The i Grand Touring model adds xenon headlights, heated leather seats with a memory function for the driver seat, Bluetooth connectivity, dual-zone automatic climate control, auto-dimming mirrors and an auditory blind-spot monitoring system.

The s models feature the corresponding i models’ standard equipment along with a few enhancements — the s Sport comes with 17-inch alloy wheels and dual exhaust outlets, and the s Touring and s Grand Touring add 18-inch alloy wheels. A Convenience Package for Touring models tacks on most of the Grand Touring’s standard luxuries, while the Moonroof and Bose Package adds a sunroof and an upgraded audio system to Touring and Grand Touring models. A navigation system is available only on the Grand Touring. Other options include remote start, an in-dash six-CD changer and satellite radio.

Powertrains and Performance

The front-wheel-drive 2009 Mazda 6 is powered by either a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine or a 3.7-liter V6. The four generates 170 horsepower and 167 pound-feet of torque, while the V6 pumps out 272 hp and 269 lb-ft. A six-speed manual transmission is standard on four-cylinder models, with a five-speed automatic optional on all but the i SV. A six-speed automatic is mandatory on V6-powered models.

Fuel-economy estimates stand at 20 mpg city/29 highway and 23 combined for four-cylinder models with the manual transmission, while the five-speed auto improves the four’s numbers to 21 mpg city/30 highway and 24 combined. These are class-competitive numbers. However, if you opt for the V6, estimates drop to 17 mpg city/25 highway and 20 combined, which is about as bad as it gets in this segment.

Safety

Antilock disc brakes, stability control, front-seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags are all standard on the 2009 Mazda 6.

Driving Impressions

A notable amount of road noise filters into the 6′s cabin at speed. Pavement imperfections barely ruffle the 6′s composure, though, even when it’s equipped with the optional 18-inch wheels. The base 2.5-liter engine produces wheezy noises and tepid acceleration, though the slick-shifting six-speed manual shifter livens things up a bit. The five-speed automatic is less engaging but provides remarkably refined shifts. The big 3.7-liter V6 feels and sounds muscular, yet it’s a smooth operator, even at higher engine speeds. Sadly, the six-speed automatic isn’t tuned for enthusiastic driving — downshifts are delayed, even in manual mode. Handling is impressive for a big family sedan, but the 6 doesn’t feel as tossable in corners as the Altima, and its steering is lighter and looser than the nimble Nissan’s. There’s probably enough zoom in this chassis to placate those who like to drive, while the average shopper will appreciate the 6′s reasonably compliant ride.

The popular MAZDA5 multi-activity vehicle surprises wîth new Nagare design, exceptional versatility, class-leading performance and outstanding fuel efficiency. Offering unexpected levels of design, functionality, packaging and performance simply not found in any other vehicle sold in North America today, the MAZDA5 is beloved by its owners. With a unique combination of flexible seat arrangements, sliding doors, stylish design, outstanding handling, fuel efficiency and high level of safety, MAZDA5 has made a strong impact in the North American market since it launched as a 2006 model.

The MAZDA5 is unique: it doesn’t fit into a mold, and neither do its owners; it can’t be defined by a §egmènt; it suits a family, but thrives in an active lifestyle setting. One could say it’s a vehicle right where everything else isn’t. In approaching the development of the all-new 2012 MAZDA5, Hideki Matsuoka, MAZDA5 program manager, took the best of the current model and set out to further evolve it. The team aimed to create a new multi-activity vehicle (MAV) that combines superior environmental performance wîth a new expression of stylish design. Matsuoka’s concept for the new MAZDA5 was to bring to the market a ‘contemporary smart choice.

Price: $17,995 – 23,005.
Invoice: $16,865 – 21,536.

DESIGN

Adopting the expression ‘Seductive Smartness’ as the design concept, the new MAZDA5′s design is aimed to achieve a higher balance of functionality and design, while at the same time giving it a stylish new look that is immediately distinguishable from the box-like designs found on conventional offerings in the market. Application of the Nagare ‘flow’ design language brings an elegant and stylish new look to the MAZDA5. Mazda has only featured Nagare design on concept cars; this is the first time the design language has been used in a production vehicle. Nagare incorporates the beauty of nature, in particular the forces of wind and water, to lend an intuitive sense of motion to the respective designs. Nagare design, as it applies to the new MAZDA5, not only expresses the essence of dynamic performance and the elegance inspired by the beauty of nature, but also the care taken in developing and manufacturing the MAZDA5 to coexist harmoniously wîth the environment. In addition, its elegantly flowing design also contributes to aerodynamic performance and a quiet ride.

In styling the new MAZDA5, the design team viewed the overall image as a single bead of water wîth ripples intentionally left on the surface, such that the body’s lines express the flow of motion. The flow begins at the front grille and passes smoothly over the headlamps, hood and fenders. It then continues over the sides of the body, rear combination lamps and tailgate in a continuous stream. The various lines and motifs appear only to disappear again, creating a repeating theme of change and fusion that guides one’s eyes wîth its expression of beauty. The overall effect is a look of quality, emotional styling and elegance that intensifies the joy of ownership.

The five-point front grille shares the unique design of the family face that is found on every Mazda. This makes it immediately distinguishable as a Mazda product, and lends it a dynamic and sporty expression that is true to its DNA. The ‘flowing’ lines of the hood and headlamps gather in the center of the grille to create a powerful sense of motion. And the curved lines that form the mesh pattern adopted for the grille lend the impression that the mesh flows out from the center to the sides, which expresses the essence of Nagare design. The fog lamp bezels were designed to form a continuous line wîth the side shoulders and wheel arches to present a wide, dynamic image. This blends beautifully wîth the gentle S-shaped contour established by the flowing lines off the sides of the front grille and up toward the headlamps. In addition, the mesh pattern surrounding the fog lamps creates a design that flows back toward the rear of the vehicle. The deeply sculpted form of the area around the hood and fog lamps gives the front a firm countenance that emphasizes its aggressive-lòòking styling. The hood is laid out taller than the previous generation MAZDA5, which presents a greater presence.

The Nagare design motif applied to the sides of the body gracefully continues the dynamic flow of the lines from the headlamps and front fenders, and then carries that flow to the rear fenders and rear combination lamps in beautiful fashion. In the same spirit, the rails for the sliding door are blended skillfully wîth the character lines. By connecting the flow from the front and sides through to the rear fenders, rear combination lamps and all the way to the tailgate, MAZDA5′s design creates an exquisite and consistent body line. Adding further appeal and lending the rear end a wider, more stable look, is the powerful line cut by the prominent rear fender shoulders combined wîth the placement of the rear combination lamps, which are laid out lower than on the previous generation vehicle. The finishing touch is the extended rear quarter and rear window glass panels that completely cover the D-pillar to emphasize the fresh, flowing design.

The headlamps on the new MAZDA5 play a prominent role in the overall design of the vehicle. The headlamp design starts wîth the stretched look that distinguishes Mazda headlamps; Nagare is introduced in the form of a supple S-shape design. This line blends wîth those on the front grille, hood and fender arches to heighten the individualistic character of the vehicle. Direct electrodeposition coating is used to enhance the contrast of textures within the lamp housing. The overall effect is that of an original and extremely stylish new design. The rear combination lamps pick up the flow from the character lines on the sides of the body and the sliding door rails, and continue it on to the tailgate to form a beautiful design. In creating this look, the MAZDA5 blends the trailing end of the sliding door rails smoothly into the rear combination lamps to create a simple, stylish expression.

INTERIOR

Motifs adopted from the Nagare design language can also be found throughout the interior, from the lines above the dials and along the instrument panel to the stitch pattern in the seats and the design of the seat fabric. The overall ambience established is that of a sporty, high-quality cabin. The driver-oriented design of the interior positions the peak of the meter hood as the tall point, wîth all lines flowing from there to comfortably wrap around the driver.

The instrument panel flows from the cockpit to the center panel and on to the passenger-side dashboard in a rippling effect that suggests a liquid sensation to the design. The same flow continues on through the lines of the seat pattern, connecting seamlessly wîth the second and third row seats to create a strong sense of unity throughout the interior. The cockpit presents a sporty look that hints at what the MAZDA5 will be like to drive, from the look of its twin deep-set gauges to the genuine leather that wraps the §teering wheel and gear shift knob. The center panel is fitted wîth chrome plating and silver-trimmed control knobs that creates a look of top quality, all the while emphasizing the stylish design of the new MAZDA5′s cabin.

PERFORMANCE

MAZDA5 customers will benefit from a healthier injection of Zoom-Zoom for 2012, attributable to an increase in displacement from 2.3 to 2.5-liters. This new engine is similar in most details to those found in the MAZDA3, MAZDA6 and CX-7. Mazda’s MZR engine family is widely regarded as one of the world’s most advanced forms of fuel-efficient, high-energy propulsion. The MZR 2.5-liter featured in the new MAZDA5 is a light, compact design that offers higher performance yet better fuel efficiency than the previous generation. The MZR 2.5-liter produces its maximum output of 157 hp at a lower rpm than the previous 2.3-liter (6,000 rpm), and also delivers more torque (163 ft-lb at 4,000 rpm) throughout its operating range for a more satisfying and relaxing driving experience. In addition, a tall sixth gear allows quiet and comfortable cruising.

The MZR 2.5-liter uses a cast aluminum cylinder block and high-strength, thin-walled sleeves, as well as compact, light-weight pistons. The result is a design that weighs in about as light as the outgoing 2.3-liter motor. Improvement was also made to the flow within the intake valves and reduced exhaust resistance, while using Sequential Valve Timing (S-VT) to deliver optimum intake valve timing whether dawdling in traffic or carving around an on-ramp. Mazda’s Variable Induction System (VIS) is also utilized to improve low to mid range torque. The MZR 2.5-liter engine gives a linear feel to acceleration, accurate response and a light, relaxing driving performance. MAZDA5 can be equipped wîth either a six-speed manual transmission (Sport models only) or a five-speed electronically controlled automatic wîth manual shift control. Despite an increase in power and displacement, fuel efficiency ratings show no loss over the previous generation’s 2.3-liter engine.

A uniquely Mazda Active Adaptive Shift protocol, which has earned high acclaim on the RX-8 sports car, provides the new five-speed automatic transmission wîth the performance and response that MAZDA5 customers expect. Part-throttle downshifts are delivered in sync wîth the nudge of the accelerator during passing. When the car is braked aggressively in anticipation of cornering, the transmission also downshifts to add engine braking and to prepare for an expedient exit from the bend. A wider overall ratio spread assists acceleration from rest while also providing quieter and more efficient highway cruising.

MAZDA5′s §teering system delivers a precise, linear feel thanks in part to Mazda’s electronic hydraulic power assist §teering (EHPAS) system. Adopting an electric pump for the new MAZDA5, the system also contributes to improved fuel mileage. Rubber couplings added to the §teering shaft joints help realize an even smoother, more linear feel to §teering actions. The §teering system also includes tilt and telescopic adjustment that lets any member of the family find the right driving position, regardless of height and build.

Suspension layout for the previous MAZDA5 used MacPherson struts in the front and a multi-link suspension in the rear that employed separate coils and dampers as part of its input separated system. The dampers used were a twin tube type and the rear dampers included integrated rebound springs. The inherent functions of these components earned the suspension high acclaim for delivering superior handling stability. While the new MAZDA5 continues to use this suspension system, the spring rates have been increased to realize a new level of linear roll and to improve straight-line stability when driving at highway speeds. Stiffness is increased in the lower arm mount bushings for the front suspension for a more direct, linear feel to §teering.

SAFETY

The previous generation MAZDA5 achieved outstanding safety ratings. While carrying over this high level of safety performance, the new MAZDA5 further raises that safety level, and never makes customers pay more money for more safety – all features are provided on all vehicles at no additional cost. All MAZDA5s include a long and impressive list of safety features, including: Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) wîth Traction Control System (TCS), Electric Hydraulic Power Assist (EHPAS) §teering system, ‘Triple H’ body construction, side-impact door beams, crushable brake and accelerator pedal assembly, advanced dual front air bags, front seat side air bags, three-row side air curtains, engine immobilizer anti-theft system, second row LATCH child safety seat anchors and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). The 2012 MAZDA5 will also offer Mazda’s Brake Override System. This system always prioritizes the brake pedal over the accelerator pedal should both be engaged simultaneously, allowing the vehicle to be brought to a safe stop.

THREE WELL EQUIPPED MODELS

The 2012 MAZDA5 is available in three trim levels – the entry-level Sport, Touring and top-grade Grand Touring. All three trim levels offer the versatility, features and style consumers in the market for a multi-activity vehicle want, at a price they can afford. The well-equipped MAZDA5 Sport is powered by a 157 horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and is available wîth either a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. Standard features include 16-inch alloy wheels wîth 205/55/R16 all-season tires, power mirrors, air conditioning, power windows and door locks, AM/FM/CD/MP3 stereo wîth six speakers, audio auxiliary jack, tilt and telescoping §teering wheel, remote keyless entry system, one-touch up/down driver’s window, 50/50 split fold-down third row seats and §teering wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls.

The RX-8 has won more than 50 global awards since its release including 2003 RJC Car of the Year in Japan Australia’s Wheels magazine’s Car of the Year for 2003, 2003 International Engine of the Year, 2004 Singapore Car of the Year, the 2004 Ú.S. Best Sports Car and ÚK Car of the Year 2004. It was also named on Car and Driver magazine’s Ten Best list for 2004, 2005, and 2006. All together, Mazda has sold nearly 167,000 RX-8s around the world. For 2009, Mazda will further the evolution of the four-door, four-seater sports coupe, giving RX-8 a refreshed exterior and interior design, enhanced performance and a new R3 sport package for the ultimate driving enthusiast. Unchanged is the core of the RX-8 – a high-powered, lightweight and perfectly balanced machine powered by the world-renowned twin-rotor RENESIS rotary engine.

STYLING

RX-8 was designed wîth an athletically sculpted exterior that provides a sense of originality that’s unrivaled in the marketplace today. For 2009, RX-8 receives design enhancements that are meant to freshen the styling and give RX-8 a new look, without impairing the basic design thémé. Refinements for the 2009 model year include restyled front and rear bumpers and front fascia; sporty, high quality finish front and rear headlamps; and larger exhaust pipes (now measuring 90 mm across). The 2009 RX-8 also offers a new five-spoke wheel design featuring a symbolic and sporty design reminiscent of the rotary engine, wîth different arrangements for each wheel size. Taut muscular lines give RX-8 the liberating look of an athlete in motion. The muscular styling maintains classic sports car proportions while adding a Zoom-Zoom edge that is unmistakably Mazda.

The RX-8′s unique ‘freestyle’ four-door design is proof that a true sports car does not need to sacrifice space or convenience for performance. The advanced design of the rear-hinged rear doors, provides a large door opening, allowing adult-sized passengers to easily enter and exit the vehicle. This design is also advantageous when securing a baby or a small child in the back seat. With a spacious rear seat area providing ample passenger room for four full-size adults, and enough trunk space for a weekend’s worth of luggage, this sports car proves its versatility. The RX-8′s exterior styling presents a genuine sports car form, while the interior boasts a comfortable and intelligently designed cabin.

Minor enhancements were made for the 2009 RX-8 to provide a simple and functional interior design that supports driving pleasure. The center IP shape was redesigned to give a feeling of dynamic movement, a variable red-zone was added to the tachometer that will rise as the engine comes to operating temperature and a new §teering wheel and redesigned front and rear seats are also added. An extremely low cabin floor allows the seats to be mounted low in the chassis, which, along wîth a low instrument cluster and hood, allows a low center of gravity and allows outstanding occupant visibility. Mazda designers concentrated on the shape of the front seat backs and the rear seat cushions to ensure adequate rear-seat knee room. Front seat slide-rails are positioned to allow maximum leg room for rear-seat passengers.

The rotary design element is incorporated through the interior of the RX-8 in creative ways, appearing in the seats. The stylish cabin also evokes a sense of luxury and high-end quality. Mazda’s design team examined every aspect and component of the interior and has created an elegant, driver-centric atmosphere. Through the use of advanced ergonomic research, Mazda engineers determined that improper seating posture is a major cause of driver fatigue and built in optimum support in the front seats to help offset discomfort. In addition, the color of the RX-8′s instrument cluster was developed to reduce eye fatigue and strain.

PERFORMANCE

Through-and-through, the RX-8 is a pure sports car that gives the driver an exciting and dynamic experience. For 2009, engineers improved RX-8 body rigidity through the addition of structural reinforcements, by adding a trapezoidal strut tower bar and enhancing the local rigidity of the front suspension tower areas. Also, the rear suspension geometry has been reconfigured for better handling performance and driveshaft rigidity is improved, lowering NVH levels and improving performance. In addition, the differential gear ratio on manual transmission-equipped cars is lowered from 4.444 to 4.777 for improved off-the-line performance. While minimal, these performance changes give RX-8 increased acceleration and performance, as well as even greater responsiveness to the accelerator pedal – always a rotary-engine and RX-8 hallmark. To achieve this sophisticated dynamic, Mazda utilizes the advanced RENESIS (Rotary Engine genesis – or rebirth of the rotary engine) engine. The Mazda RX-8 remains the only mass-produced rotary-powered passenger car in the world. While exhibiting unusually high power output for a naturally aspirated engine, RENESIS outstrips comparable reciprocating engines in terms of acceleration, the feeling of power in reserve and quick response.

The 2009 Mazda RX-8 is available as either a 232-horsepower model fitted wîth a six-speed manual transmission, or a 212-horsepower model fitted wîth a six-speed Sport A/T automatic wîth §teering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters for a Formula 1-style driving experience. By turning a triangular rotor in a cocoon-shaped combustion chamber, the RX-8′s rotary engine efficiently performs the four processes of intake, compression, combustion and exhaust. The RENESIS engine is remarkably smooth and high revving — all the way to 9,000 rpm (7,500 rpm on Sport A/T–equipped models) — and offers a smaller engine footprint than traditional internal combustion engines (some 60 percent smaller and lighter than a comparably powered V-6, and 40 percent smaller and lighter than a four-cylinder). In fact, the packaging and styling that define the RX-8 would not have been possible had Mazda engineers chosen a conventional piston engine. Improving upon 40 years of rotary designs, the RENESIS engine features side intake and exhaust ports wîth nearly 30 percent more intake port and twice as much exhaust port than its predecessors. The efficiencies gained through shortening intake/exhaust overlapping period and using the larger intake and exhaust ports in delivering world-class performance.

The RX-8′s normally aspirated 1.3-liter engine might appear diminutive to the untrained eye when compared to large-displacement V-8s or heavyweight V-10s or V-12s. However, through the incredible efficiencies of a rotary powerplant, an advanced three-stage intake system and an electronic throttle, the RENESIS engine delivers smooth, linear power on a grand scale. The RX-8 uses an aluminum double-wishbone front suspension, reducing unsprung weight over the use of steel components. By mounting the upper and lower arms on a highly rigid sub-frame, the long arms ensure linear alignment changes throughout the jounce and rebound of the front wheels. All corners are fitted wîth mono-tube gas-filled shock absorbers designed wîth large-diameter internal pistons and valving, which offer excellent road feedback and a smooth ride.

An electric rack-and-pinion power-§teering system transmits just the right amount of road information back to the driver. Mazda engineers have chosen to pursue their own path by using an electric motor for §teering assistance rather than a conventional power-§teering pump. The electric motor provides additional assistance at low speeds to ease parking and reduces §teering assistance at higher speeds to provide greater road feel, responsiveness and feedback. And, in keeping wîth the rest of the development on RX-8, it is far lighter and easier to package than a conventional power-§teering rack.

PACKIGING INNOVATIONS

To cater to the driving-conscious enthusiast, the 2009 RX-8 will offer a new R3 sport package. Providing the very best in rotary-powered motoring, the R3 harkens back to the R1 and R2 packages offered on the mighty third-generation RX-7, and adds a sport-tuned suspension wîth Bilstein shock absorbers and front suspension crossmembers filled wîth urethane foam. Filling the crossmembers makes for a smoother ride, minimized NVH and greater suspension control. On the visual side of the package, a rear spoiler, side sills, fog lights and sporty front bumper are added to give an aggressive appearance, along wîth 19-inch forged aluminum-alloy wheels wîth high performance tires.

Inside, the R3 adds a 300-watt Bose® audio system wîth Centerpoint® surround sound and AudioPilot® noise compensation technology, Bluetooth hands-free phone system, front Recaro sport seats wîth leather side bolsters, leather-wrapped parking brake handle and Mazda advanced keyless entry and start system. Three other trim levels are also offered including: a Sport trim, a Touring trim (adds HID headlights, fog lamps, auto dimming mirror wîth Homelink® and 6-disc auto changer on top of the Sport trim features and DSC; add 18-inch wheels, a limited-slip differential, sport-tuned suspension and larger front disc brakes to these items for A/T cars, and Bose® audio system, moonroof, SIRIÚS satellite radio are offered as the package option), and a Grand Touring trim (on top of the Touring trim features, adds automatic air conditioner, Bluetooth, hands-free phone system, Bose® audio system auto headlight, rain sensing wiper, power-adjustable driver’s seat wîth lumbar support and memory function, leather seating surfaces — heated front seats— and heated outside mirrors and Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry & Start system.

A DVD-driven satellite-navigation unit is available as a stand-alone option and uses a single DVD for mapping the entire Únited States and portions of Canada. Additionally, a moon roof and SIRIÚS satellite radio are offered as an package option.) All Mazdas come wîth a roadside assistance program. With a call to a toll-free number, owners can access roadside assistance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year throughout the Únited States and Canada. In addition, a comprehensive three-year/36,000-mile warranty covers every part on the vehicle except those subject to normal wear. Also, all models receive a five-year/60,000 mile powertrain warranty and a five-year/unlimited-mileage corrosion warranty.

SAFETY

When designing the RX-8, safety was given as much of a priority as was performance. For Mazda, the safety process incorporates both accident avoidance and accident protection. In effect, this approach to safety means the RX-8 can help the driver avoid various dangers and protect occupants in the unfortunate event of a collision. In rollover tests performed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the RX-8 achieved an impressive five-star rating.

Mazda engineers integrated numerous active and passive safety elements throughout the car. Active safety features, which require input from the driver, include the use of large ABS-equipped disc brakes on all wheels as well as precise §teering and suspension systems. Dynamic Stability Control (available on Sport models wîth Performance package, standard on Touring and Grand Touring) delivers a superior level of handling that can be disabled when driving and road conditions allow safe operation. Passive systems, or those that take effect automatically without the driver’s involvement, also are present throughout the RX-8.

Despite the absence of a center B-pillar, the RX-8 has an exceptionally rigid body, accomplished through the use of the vertical pillars built in the rear doors and a series of locking pins, which hold the doors together and bind each door directly into the roof and floor. Integrating the frame components helps dissipate crash energy through the vehicle’s structure. Other standard passive systems on the RX-8 include front airbags, seat-mounted side-impact airbags and side-curtain airbags. Additionally, the front end and engine bay have ample crumple zones, the front seats are designed to reduce whiplash injuries, the brake pedal is designed to break away in the event of a collision of sufficient force to protect feet and legs and all four seating positions are fitted wîth three-point seatbelts.

Even pedestrian protection was considered, as the RX-8 is fitted wîth Mazda’s ‘shock-cone’ hood design that yields more to the impact of a pedestrian onto the hood than a standard design, yet is strong enough to not deform in normal use. Headquartered in Irvine, California, Mazda North American Operations oversees the sales, marketing, parts and customer service support of Mazda vehicles in the Únited States, Canada and Mexico through nearly 900 dealers. Operations in Canada are managed by Mazda Canada, Inc., located in Ontario, Canada, and in Mexico by Mazda Motor de Mexico in Mexico City.

PERFORMANCE

The range-topping 3.0-liter V6 engine has been noted for its strong performance and refinement, producing 212 horsepower (at 6,000 rpm) and 197 lb-ft torque (at 5,000 rpm). The V6 engine is mated to either a five-speed manual gearbox or six-speed Sport A/T automatic with manual shift. The MAZDA6 is the only vehicle in its class that offers a six-speed automatic transmission. (posted on conceptcarz.com) The wide number of ratios improves performance, drivability, smoothness and gas mileage. The tall top gear also improves comfort and quietness on the freeway, while a short first gear gives aggressive off-the-line performance. These are all examples of MAZDA6′s sports-first philosophy.

The 2.3-liter four-cylinder (I-4) engine used on the MAZDA6 i models produces 156 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 154 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. This highly sophisticated engine uses an aluminum block and head (like the V6 engine) and double overhead camshafts with 16 valves for excellent engine peathing and smooth revving. Smoothness and refinement are enhanced by the use of a balance shaft, helping make this four-cylinder engine almost as smooth as a reliable six-cylinder unit.

The 2.3-liter engine is specified with Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (PZEV) equipment in the eight states that require California emissions (CA, MA, ME, NY, VT, CT, RI and PA). This makes the 2.3-liter engine 90-percent cleaner than the average new car. Evaporative emissions are completely eliminated by re-engineering the exhaust plumbing, repositioning the first catalytic converter and eco-friendly Electronic Control Únit (ECÚ) programming. All i models are fitted as standard with a five-speed manual gearbox, but available with a five-speed Sport A/T automatic transmission with manual shift mode. The extra gear ratio improves acceleration, cruising refinement and fuel economy.

The MAZDA6 comes standard with many safety features including Anti-lock pake System (ABS), Traction Control and side airbags with side curtains on all models and trims. ABS helps to decrease stopping distances, allowing drivers to steer when paking hard, and to minimize the chance of skids. Electronic pakeforce Distribution (EBD) automatically balances front-to-rear paking forces, irrespective of the vehicle’s load. Electronic traction control, which minimizes wheel spin in poor weather or slippery conditions, is standard across the range. For 2008, all models receive a standard Tire Pressure Monitoring System.

Secondary safety features include Triple-H body construction, which gives superb strength to the unitary construction body, front and rear side door beams, three-point seat belts for all five occupants, dual front air bags, and front and rear whiplash-reducing head restraints. Side air bags and side-curtain air bags are standard on all models. The keyless entry has remote locking/unlocking, automatic opening and closing of the front windows, a trunk release and a panic button.

INTERIOR

The essence of the MAZDA6 is performance, and the design, inside and out, reinforces that impression. The MAZDA6 includes specially-designed front seats on all models for greater comfort and support. The center console’s dark gray surface uses a separate piano-black radio/CD face with restyled switches. The sporty interior uses a three-spoke leather-wrapped §teering wheel, offering tilt and telescopic adjustments along with fingertip cruise and audio controls. Instrumentation includes analog speedometer, tachometer, fuel and engine temperature gauges, as well as a digital readout for the outside air temperature.

While the MAZDA6 is clearly a driver’s car, it is spacious enough to seat five adults comfortably. A six-speaker integrated AM/FM/CD sound system is standard on all cars, an in-dash six-disc CD changer is standard on the Sport Value Edition, Touring and Grand Touring. A 200-watt BOSE® sound system comprised of an in-dash six-disc CD changer, four 25-watt speakers, a tweeter mounted in the A-pillar of each front door, a 100-watt subwoofer and an amplifier comes standard on Grand Touring models. The latest in limited voice-command DVD satellite navigation is available on the Grand Touring models.

HANDLING

Double wishbone front suspension and ‘E’ type multi-link rear suspension give the 2008 MAZDA6 superb wheel control for excellent handling and ride. The wide track and standard stabilizer bars reduce roll and improve driver response. A long wheelbase and short front and rear overhangs further improve stability.

The power-assisted rack and pinion §teering has a very quick ratio – only 2.54 turns lock to lock – to improve handling nimbleness and ensure driver involvement. Yet its variable assistance means it is light and easy to use at parking speed, while firming up at higher speeds to give full feedback from the front wheels to the driver’s palms.

MAZDA6 is quite unlike the other midsize sedans against which it competes. While they prioritize a ride that removes occupants from feeling the road, Mazda’s engineers knew that their customers would place a higher priority on inclusion than isolation. The MAZDA6 is proof of that commitment to driving fun.

STYLING

The exterior of the MAZDA6 is athletic and bold. The sharp styling is accented with a sport grille on some models and angular headlamps across the range. The headlamps on the i Sport Value Edition, Touring and Grand Touring models use dark gray bezels. MAZDA6 Grand Touring models offer High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps for superior illumination and lower maintenance.

Fog lamps are incorporated into the front spoiler, while side sills highlight the ‘hug-the-road’ quality of the MAZDA6′s style. A rear spoiler is standard on Grand Touring models and all 5-Doors. Standard 18-inch alloy wheels on the s Grand Touring model further improves the sporty appearance, while maintaining traction and road holding. With the 2008 model year also come two new exterior colors – Volcanic Red (4-door model) and Silver Metallic.

FUNCTIONALITY

From the outside, the MAZDA6 5-Door model differs from the sedan, only from the B-pillar back. The 5-Door is geared toward customers who want a sports sedan with increased cargo space. All MAZDA6 5-Doors come standard with a Sport Package and all come equipped with a rear wiper/washer. The 5-Door is a far cry from the unattractive design usually associated with hatchbacks. The slope of the 5-Door’s roofline to the rear decklid is gradual instead of the typical flat hatch, giving the 5-Door a coupe-like grace.

The rear liftgate opens to reveal a vast covered cargo area with 22.0 cubic feet of space, nearly 50-percent more than the sedan’s. Cargo space more than doubles when the rear seats are folded, providing 58.7 cubic feet of space. Rear 60/40 split seats fold with the pull of a lever, and there is no need to remove the head rests for a near-flat cargo floor. The expansive liftgate opening ensures that oddly shaped items, difficult to fit in the trunk of a sedan, can easily be accommodated. Options to stow items in the 5-Door include cargo tie-downs and additional storage available in two hidden compartments located in the side panels.

All 2008 Mazdas come with a roadside assistance program. With a call to a toll-free number, owners can access roadside assistance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year throughout the Únited States and Canada. In addition, a comprehensive three-year/36,000-mile warranty covers every part on the vehicle except those subject to normal wear. Also, all 2008 models receive a five-year/60,000 mile powertrain warranty and a five-year/unlimited-mileage corrosion warranty.
