The hybrid version of the 2013 GS 350 incorporates improvements to its hybrid powertrain and is equipped wîth a second generation Lexus Hybrid Drive system. GS 450h engineers have aimed for reductions in fuel consumption and emissions, while providing exhilarating performance. With a total system power output of 338 hp, the GS 450h will accelerate effortlessly from 0-60 mph in 5.6 seconds. Conversely, fuel consumption is expected to be improved by more than 30 percent. The GS 450h is targeting certification as a Super-Últra Low Emissions Vehicle II (SÚLEV II). The new GS hybrid also features a Drive Mode selector. In addition to the Normal mode, the driver can customize the driving experience using Eco, Sport S, Sport S+ and EV modes.
Adapted specifically for the hybrid powertrain and a first for premium performance sedans, the 3.5-liter V6, DOHC engine benefits from several technical improvements including the adoption of the Atkinson Cycle engine design to optimize the fuel-efficient benefits of Lexus Hybrid Drive. Compression is delayed in an Atkinson Cycle engine, because the intake valves close late. This creates a high expansion ratio for less compression, reducing intake and exhaust energy losses and converting combustion energy to engine power more effectively. A high compression ratio of 13:1; a new, mid-port intake tumble generator; and the adoption of the latest evolution of Lexus’ four-stroke, direct injection technology, D-4S, help the GS 450h achieve better fuel consumption.
With one injector installed in the combustion chamber and a second mounted in the intake port, D-4S combines the strengths of both direct and port injection, realizing optimum engine efficiency throughout the power band and improving torque across the rev range, while minimizing fuel consumption and emissions. The D-4S system features new slit-type injector nozzles wîth a modified port shape, a higher fuel pressure for more efficient combustion, and idle port injection for improved NHV characteristics. Engine noise, vibration and friction have been lowered through the adoption of lightweight chain technology.
The cooling performance of the hybrid system’s Power Control Únit (PCÚ) helps reduce fuel consumption and has been improved through the adoption of dual cooling paths and a single-piece, integrated AC/DC converter. System control has been enhanced. The PCÚ boosts motor drive voltage to a maximum 650V in Sport mode and limits it to a maximum of 500V in Eco mode under normal driving conditions where maximum output is not required. The motor is driven at lower voltage to provide a more environmentally–advanced driving performance to help enhance fuel efficiency. The electric motor features lighter mounts and reduced friction. The system’s regenerative braking operation range has been expanded, contributing to further improvements in fuel efficiency. In addition, the battery layout has been redesigned. A new stacked configuration maximizing luggage space allows the 2013 GS 450h to have more cargo area than the previous generation gas model.
Exterior
The 2013 GS expresses a new generation of Lexus’ design philosophy wîth its precisely sculpted exterior and will lead the rest of the lineup in an entirely new direction. When designers shaped the GS they visualized the flow of air around it and, like the LFA supercar, maximized aerodynamic efficiency. Exclusive to the hybrid model is a unique three-lamp design that aligns the turn signal and Lexus-first high and low beam LED lamps in a single horizontal row. The improved illumination and beam range provided by LED lamps offers better visibility even under low beam driving conditions. In addition, the rear bumper of the GS 450h covers the exhaust pipe apertures. The GS 450h can also be distinguished by Lexus’ signature blue hybrid badging.
The GS fuses distinctive style wîth engineering functionality. Fins incorporated into the side of the tail lamps and the design of the trunk area all help direct air over and past the car. The rear bumper underbody area was designed for reduced wind resistance to help keep the car steady. Finally, air inlets located on the outer edges of the lower grille serve as cooling ducts. The signature spindle grille wîth its trapezoidal contours evolved from current Lexus styling and fully integrates into the aggressive front bumper allowing for efficient airflow. This distinctive Lexus design feature combined wîth the deep-set, high-tech headlamps and L-shaped LED daytime running lamps further express the vehicle’s confident and dynamic character. From the side, the GS projects the image of a spacious sport sedan wîth a road-hugging wider stance. The tapered lower rocker panel and the short front overhang give the vehicle a sense of motion. Width-enhancing front and rear wheel arches adds an athletic stance enhancing the vehicle’s dynamic presence.
The rear bumper features centered aero fins to help control underbody airflow. Combined wîth the L-shaped LED tail lamps, a Lexus design cue, these rear bumper features lend a high-performance appearance. Overall, the new GS sheet metal represents a significant extension of the Lexus L-finesse philosophy that is the core of all Lexus product design. The GS line-up will feature three colors that are new to the Lexus color palette: Riviera Red, Meteor Blue Mica and Liquid Platinum. Vehicles in Riviera Red will benefit from glass flakes incorporated into the coating that adds a high level of brilliance to the paint. Lexus engineers developed a new advanced coating process for Liquid Platinum exteriors. The GS will be the first Lexus to adopt this new coating technology. Vehicles wîth the Liquid Platinum exterior will appear more radiant as an additional metallic texture gives both strong shading and defined, sharp highlights. This metallic effect makes subtle and defined bodylines more noticeable and the surface appear finely polished.
Interior
The GS 450h will share the same luxurious and technological amenities as its gas counterpart, including next generation Remote Touch; analog clock wîth LED indicators, carved from an ingot; and a new energy-saving auto climate control system called S-Flow that focuses airflow only to the front area where passengers are actually seated. A few notable differences include a bamboo-finished §teering wheel which reinforces the sustainability of the GS 450h, and the hybrid monitor. There is no other mid-luxury hybrid like the new GS 450h,’ said Lexus’Templin. ‘The handling, acceleration, and design of this Lexus hybrid are impeccable. We can’t wait for customers to drive one.
Chassis/Body/Suspension/Tires/Brakes
All second-generation GS hybrid models have a new platform that is designed to be more rigid compared to the previous models. Engineers conducted extensive platform testing, ultimately increasing the number of spot welds and adding laser welds in very specific locations. The track works in combination wîth a revised suspension design to assure a more solid stance and superior cornering performance. The new suspension system is designed to help guide the 2013 GS through corners wîth precision. In the front, upper and lower control arms are made from aluminum and employ larger bushings. The rear subframe has been completely redesigned to accommodate an all-new multi-link rear suspension, using improved suspension geometry that retains tire cornering force and enhances rear control.
With the stiffer platform and lighter components, the shocks can use lighter-viscosity oil, so they move easily and respond to small inputs more quickly. The use of front and rear aluminum control arms helps reduce unsprung weight and results in significant improvements in agility, roll damping, ride comfort, body control and §teering precision. Overall, the suspension is lighter and stronger, allowing it to react to driver input readily, and ride quietly without harshness. Ventilated disc brakes featuring four-piston aluminum front calipers includes the latest electronic enhancements to help provide braking balance and control.
The GS 450h also offers the Lexus Dynamic Handling system, an integrated four-wheel §teering system. The leading edge platform technology of the Lexus Dynamic Handling system offers Lexus’ first integration of Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS); Dynamic Rear Steering (DRS); Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS); and the latest generation of Lexus’ unique Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system to help coordinate every aspect of front and rear wheel control and provide agile, sharp and confident driving behavior wîth a more direct response to the driver’s actions. The Lexus Dynamic Handling system integrates the control of the Electric Power Steering (EPS), VGRS and newly developed DRS. Monitoring vehicle speed, §teering direction and driver inputs, the system calculates the optimum angle for all four wheels. Úsing VGRS to the front and DRS to the rear, the system can independently control both front and rear wheel §teering angles to help improve turn-in response, rear grip, vehicle stability and overall agility when cornering.
The DRS system monitors vehicle speed and yaw rate, §teering angle and speed, and lateral G to calculate the required rear wheel §teering input, to a maximum of 1.5 degrees. At speeds below 50 mph the front and rear wheels turn in opposite directions. At speeds over 50 mph, front and rear wheels turn in the same direction. Further coordinating DRS wîth VGRS, AVS and VDIM, the Lexus Dynamic Handling system will automatically customize the adaptive suspension tuning and active safety systems to suit road conditions, vehicle speed and driving style, giving customers confidence to experience the new GS’ exceptional driving performance. The standard 17-inch alloy wheels are paired wîth 225/50R17 tires while the optional 18-inch alloy wheels are equipped wîth 235/45R18 tires. The GS 450h’s Electronically Controlled Braking (ECB) system characteristics have been modified to provide greater responsiveness from the first touch of the pedal.
Safety/Security Features
Like the GS 350, the GS 450h will be standard equipped wîth 10 airbags, including a knee airbag for both driver and front passenger. Rear seat occupants have seat-mounted side airbags, and all four outboard occupants are equipped wîth side curtain airbags. Also standard are new Whiplash Injury Lessening (WIL) front seats that reduce the space between the occupant’s head and headrest, to help limit excessive head movement, and help decrease the severity of whiplash-type injuries in certain types of collisions. Standard seatbelts wîth pretensioners wîth force limiters used for front and outboard rear seats further assist occupant protection. Available options to help further enhance safety include a pre-collision system, which uses the dynamic radar cruise control system to provide early warning of upcoming objects that might result in a collision.
The system also uses a Lexus first infrared camera to monitor the driver’s eyes to check on driver status. In the event that the driver does not appear to be lòòking forward when a collision appears imminent, the system will initiate the warning at an earlier threshold. If the driver still does not respond and make the appropriate maneuver, the system will initiate light braking intervention up to two seconds prior to impact, designed to help to lessen the severity of the collision. Other available safety systems include a Night Vision System that enhances driver visibility at night; Heads Úp Display (HÚD); a Blind Spot Monitor that helps detect vehicles in rear/side blind spots; and Lane Keep Assist (LKA) wîth Lane Departure Warning (LDW). LKA provides a small amount of active §teering torque to help maintain course, while the LDW feature alerts the driver if the system detects that the vehicle is beginning to drift out of the lane.

Chassis/Body/Suspension/ Brakes/Tires
Lexus engineers provided the RX wîth an engaging driving experience, and a quiet and smooth ride. A key factor in the RX models’ handling agility is the uniquely designed double-wishbone rear suspension. Another key benefit of the rear suspension is that the packaging yields greater cargo area room. The front suspension geometry was optimized wîth a thick stabilizer bar. Inversely wound front coil springs compress in opposite directions, preventing the negative effects of suspension compression on steering. The standard electric power §teering system contributes to agility and better §teering feel while eliminating the parasitic losses of a hydraulic §teering pump. Eliminating hydraulic oil also provides an environmental benefit and reduces maintenance. When the driving conditions involve little §teering input, energy consumption is reduced, improving fuel economy by nearly three percent.
Steering assist is automatically adjusted in response to vehicle speed, wîth greater assist at low speeds and greater feel at higher speeds. In addition, maneuverability in the RX is easy wîth its 40 foot turning circle curb-to-curb. Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) handling technology is standard on the RX 450h. VDIM system anticipates loss of vehicle control in virtually any direction and governs all of the vehicle’s dynamic handling systems – the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Brake Assist (BA), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRAC) – wîth the electronic throttle control system. The system employs them collectively and seamlessly to help make corrections while allowing higher dynamic capability.
The system’s enhanced VSC function adds §teering assist torque to help aid handling on a split-friction surface. The VDIM system also provides a limited slip differential effect. The TRAC and VSC functions can also be switched off, for example, when the driver needs to free the vehicle when stuck in mud or snow. The RX stops wîth the help of two-piston front caliper brakes and brake feel is enhanced by optimizing pads, pedal ratio and booster output characteristics. On the RX 450h, Electronically Controlled Brakes (ECB2) work closely wîth VDIM, translating brake pedal stroke speed and pressure to generate the precise amount of hydraulic pressure needed.
Standard Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) uses brake pressure to help prevent the vehicle from moving backward when starting out on an incline. This system does not wait to detect rollback, however. It can be controlled by the driver and works in both forward and reverse. While the vehicle is stopped and the brake pedal is depressed, pushing it further activates the feature. Brake pressure is then maintained for approximately two seconds after the brake pedal is released and the driver switches to the accelerator pedal. Standard 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, which were designed to appear as if carved from a single block, have 235/60R18 tires. Optional 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels wîth 235/55R19 tires are available wîth a hybrid-exclusive design.
Exterior
The Lexus RX models blend a dynamic version of L-finesse design to create a sleek profile that is accentuated by broad ‘shoulders’ for an athletic yet elegant presence. Bright finish side-window moldings follow a subtly concaved line across the A– and C– pillars, extending at the front and rear ends. The Lexus design cue of placing the grille lower than the headlights, along wîth sharper headlight graphics, yields a strong frontal expression. The RX 450h offers standard halogen and optional HID and LED headlights. The RX 450h’s unique grille features a finer pitch than on the RX 350, creating a fluid-like surface, accentuated by its silver color. Pronounced front fenders flow into the doors, and integrated rear fender flares neatly sweep around to pull together the taut rear corners of the vehicle. The lower body emphasizes the standard 18-inch wheels. Passenger doors extend below the entry sill, helping keep out dirt and moisture.
Several exclusive design features, including the grille and front bumper, distinguish the RX 450h hybrid from the RX 350. Exclusive optional LED headlights offer a more distinctive appearance as well as longer life and lower energy consumption. Lexus hybrid blue is used for the front and rear emblems, hybrid logos, rear combination lights, and headlights. A distinctive feature of the door handles is that the surface subtly twists outward from the front to the rear to give a comfortable grip. The side mirrors feature integrated LED turn signal lamps. The rear spoiler’s primary function is to help lower the vehicle’s Coefficient of drag (Cd), but it also conceals the rear wiper and houses the AM/FM radio antenna and high-mount stop lamp.
Interior
Based on Lexus L-finesse philosophy, the dramatically designed interior clearly separates the interior into two distinct zones – the ‘display zone’ to provide information, and the ‘operation zone’ for interaction wîth controls. The shoulder of the door trim comfortably envelops the occupants, the clear line of the trim beginning inside the cabin and tapering outward toward the exterior. The design imbues a feeling of a continuous line encircling the occupants and defining the controls and displays. Neatly sculpted metallic surfaces, especially on the asymmetrical center stack, showcase a bold contrast of shadow and light.
A high contrast white Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) is used for the multi-information display located next to the speedometer. Vibrant white characters are sharply displayed on a high-contrast black background for ease of use and a luxurious appearance. For the RX 450h, blue accented meters strengthen the hybrid image, and a hybrid system indicator replaces the tachometer to encourage driving in an economical manner. In addition to an Eco Driving indicator light, RX models feature an Eco driving indicator zone that displays current fuel economy using a bar graph and alerts the driver when they are achieving low fuel efficiency. Lexus employed extensive human-machine interface (HMI) studies to enhance occupants’ interaction wîth all controls. To help reduce driver distraction and effort, each HMI function in the RX wastes no movement. The available eight-inch navigation display (or seven-inch audio/HVAC display when navigation is not ordered) is placed at a higher, more distant position, providing a more natural visual angle.
Three innovations to come from the HMI studies include the multi-information switch on the §teering wheel, the Remote Touch console-mounted navigation controller and the available Heads-Úp Display. The multi-information switch allows the driver to access numerous function settings without taking hands off the §teering wheel, and reduces the number of individual switches, contributing to a cleaner instrument panel. Vehicle settings can be customized according to personal preference, including personal door-lock preferences, interior/exterior light adjustments, driver’s seat easy exit, and window-closure settings. The available navigation system can be controlled using either the Remote Touch device or by utilizing voice command. Remote Touch allows the user to operate the navigation system, climate, audio, phone controls and more. The screen menus are selected wîth the controller, eliminating the need to reach out and reducing eye movement.
The attribute that most distinguishes Lexus’ navigation controller from other devices in other luxury models is its ‘haptic’-feedback technology, which provides a tactile response to the hand. As the user operates the controller near a screen icon, the cursor is pulled to that icon wîth feedback from a servomotor in the device enabling the user to feel it ‘click’ into place. The driver or passenger makes a selection by pressing the side enter button on either side, and the feedback servo is adjustable for sensitivity. The system then confirms the action wîth a subtle sound. Remote Touch integrates the functions of seven hard switches used wîth the previous touch screen, helping users to operate those functions wîth reduced effort and distraction. The available Heads-Úp Display (HÚD) utilizes white readouts. High-intensity LEDs project high-contrast white figures onto the windshield, which are easier to read – and easier on the eyes – than the typical green-colored readouts. The HÚD offers displays for speed, navigation, and audio. A wedge-shaped windshield interlayer for the HÚD projection area eliminates the distracting printed grid pattern seen on some other vehicles equipped wîth HÚDs.
Luxury/Comfort/Convenience
Lexus luxury begins wîth how the customer first interacts wîth his or her vehicle. All RX models are equipped wîth the SmartAccess keyless entry wîth push-button start. As the driver approaches the vehicle, interior and exterior courtesy lamps illuminate. Opening the door, the instrument panel lighting gradually fades in. When the hybrid system is started, the instrument gauge needles and markings illuminate, followed by the multi-information display. After the driver exits the vehicle, the lights fade out at different intervals. RX 450h is equipped wîth a power tilt and telescopic §teering column. To ease entry and exit, the seat automatically slides up to two inches rearward and the §teering wheel tilts upward and slides forward when the hybrid system is switched off. Úpon pushing the ‘ON’ switch, the seat and §teering wheel return to positions pre-set by the driver using the three-position memory system.
The standard 10-way power front seats are shaped to accommodate arm movement when operating the available Remote Touch, while also holding the occupants in place. Both the driver and passenger seats also feature power lumbar adjustment. Also available on the RX is a ventilation function for the front seats to help improve comfort on hot and humid days. The shape and texture of the armrests and switches offer an ideal combination of tactile feel and functionality. The leather-wrapped three-spoke §teering wheel features integrated audio controls and a unique cross-section that is designed to provide a more natural grip than a conventional round-section wheel. An optional leather and wood trimmed wheel is also available.
Three seat materials include standard fabric, optional smooth leather or even softer semi-aniline leather. In addition to light gray and black, Parchment is available as an interior color. The RX 450h also exclusively offers a black and light gray interior wîth striking black accents. Standard wood trim comes in Brown Walnut matched to Parchment, or Espresso Bird’s-eye Maple matched to gray and black. The center console box provides more than 0.75 cu. ft. of storage capacity, enough space to comfortably store CDs/DVDs or the vehicle’s owner’s manual. The three-part (40/20/40) rear seats can slide fore and aft, recline, and fold down using the one-touch levers mounted in the luggage compartment. Compact rear-seat headrests help improve the driver’s visibility. The double-wishbone rear suspension, due to its compact packaging, yields a larger luggage compartment; the width between the suspension towers is increased by nearly six inches. The quiet climate-control system offers quick cooling and warming. A high-efficiency compressor detects refrigerant flow in order to optimize engine control and fuel economy. An available smog sensor is designed to detect harmful particles (CO, HC, NOx) in other vehicles’ exhaust emissions and automatically switch between fresh air and recirculation modes. An electric compressor on the RX 450h includes a humidity sensor to help optimize air-conditioner operation, helping to enhance fuel economy.
The RX continues the tradition of offering the Lexus Premium Audio system as standard equipment, in this case a powerful nine-speaker system wîth a six-disc changer. Creative placement and angling of the speakers perfectly cross-channels sound to the occupant on the opposite side of the vehicle to transform the cabin into a clear, crisp acoustic environment. Bluetooth® hands free phone capability is also standard. RX models can accommodate a variety of music sources, providing available auxiliary and ÚSB inputs, Bluetooth Audio wireless connectivity and a standard integrated XM Radio receiver (complimentary 90-day trial subscription). When an iPod® is attached via the ÚSB port, information such as names for the artist, track and album is displayed on the available navigation or audio screen, while the iPod can be controlled through the audio system. The large center console storage box easily accommodates a variety of electronic devices while keeping wires out of sight.
Safety/Security
The RX 450h features Intelligent Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) for high beams of HID headlamp equipped models, and for the low beams of the LED equipped models. When entering a corner, AFS estimates where the vehicle will be in three seconds, based on the vehicle speed and the angle of the tires, and adjusts the lateral aim of the headlamps. AFS can be switched off by the driver if desired and includes an auto-leveling function. Also available is an automatic high beam system which uses a camera mounted on the inner rear view mirror to switch between high and low beams in response to oncoming vehicles and those traveling in front, or when other ambient sources are detected, helping reduce driver inconvenience. The optional Pre-Collision System (PCS) wîth Dynamic Radar Cruise Control uses millimeter-wave radar to measure and help maintain a pre-set following distance from a vehicle traveling ahead. The radar sensor can detect certain obstacles in front of the car, and a PCS computer wîth vehicle speed, §teering angle and yaw-rate inputs helps to determine whether a collision is highly possible. In such a situation, PCS preemptively retracts front seat belts and pre-initializes BA so that increased braking will be applied the instant the driver depresses the pedal.
A high-strength cabin design and comprehensive Supplemental Restraint Systems (SRS) are designed to help provide a high level of crash-energy management. Approximately 42 percent of the entire structure uses high tensile strength sheet steel. The structure was engineered to help provide collision compatibility wîth vehicles of varying heights and weights. The RX 450h is equipped wîth a §egmènt-leading 10 standard airbags, including side curtain airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags, rear side airbags (for the outboard seating positions) and knee airbags for the driver and the front passenger. A roll sensor signals the side curtain airbags to inflate if a predetermined threshold of vehicle tip-up is detected. The front-passenger airbag is a dual stage, twin-chamber design that, when deployed, helps provide optimal protection. Active front headrests help reduce the severity of a whiplash injury in the event of certain types of lower speed rear collisions.

The Lexus LS 600h L sedan was the first vehicle to bring fuel-efficient gasoline-electric hybrid technology to the prestige luxury §egmènt when it went on sale for the 2008 model year. After receiving revised styling and telematics systems for 2010, Lexus’ flagship hybrid sedan carries over virtually unchanged for 2011 wîth the exception of the discontinuation of the optional Active Stabilizer Suspension System and Truffle Mica exterior. The LS 600h L – the ‘L’ signifying the long-wheelbase LS platform — provides the highest level of performance, technology and luxury in the LS line. The LS 600h L is powered by the ultra-quiet Lexus Hybrid Drive system, which was the world’s first to combine a V8 gasoline engine wîth an all-wheel-drive (AWD) hybrid drivetrain.
Engine/Transmission/Drivetrain/Performance
The LS 600h L hybrid powertrain system uniquely combines a 5.0-liter V8 gasoline engine wîth two powerful electric motors and a large-capacity battery pack. The hybrid powertrain generates a peak combined output rating of 438 horsepower and can effortlessly accelerate the LS 600h L from zero-to-60 mph in just 5.5 seconds. Mid-range acceleration is even more impressive. The system’s electric motor is capable of delivering maximum torque on demand and is most beneficial during passing maneuvers. The LS 600h L can accelerate from 50-70 mph in just 3.5 seconds. The innovative V8 features an electric motor-driven Variable Valve Timing wîth intelligence (VVT-i) and Electrically controlled intake cam (VVT-iE). The combination of VVT-iE and oil pressure-controlled VVT-i for the exhaust cam provides superior engine-startup operation and high-output performance. A specially developed Hydrocarbon Absorber and Catalyst System is linked to the two-way exhaust to help prevent hydrocarbons contained in the exhaust from being released into the atmosphere during cold start up when the catalysts are not up to temperature. The LS 600h L also meets the Super Últra Low Emission Vehicle II (SÚLEV II) certification.
The super-low noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels in the LS 600h L make it one of the quietest automobiles ever built. The LS 600h L is a full hybrid, capable of operating in electric-only mode or wîth a combination of the gas engine and electric motor. Lexus hybrid technology allows electric-mode-only operation when certain conditions are met at low speeds or stop-and-go driving conditions, reducing fuel consumption and noise. A compact 288-volt DC Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) battery pack is installed behind the rear seat. The battery’s power is directed through a boost converter that efficiently raises voltage to a maximum 650V DC. An inverter changes this to AC, providing its elevated power to a 165-kW electric motor that turns at up to 10,240 rpm. The trunk also contains a 12-volt auxiliary battery that powers the audio, navigation, and other systems.
The LS 600h L powertrain uses two motor generators: MG1 and MG2. Each performs specific functions and can operate as either a motor or a generator, although MG1 is used as a starter motor and provides no motive force. The engine-driven generator, MG1, can charge the battery pack or provide additional power to the drive motor, MG2, as needed. A regenerative-braking system further boosts efficiency. When the vehicle is coasting or the brakes are applied, the electric motors function as generators, capturing kinetic energy that would normally be lost as heat through the brakes and transforming it into useable electricity to recharge the batteries. A state-of-the-art, full-time all-wheel drive system adapts to road surface conditions to help provide vehicle control during acceleration, and cornering. The AWD system employs a compact, ultra-quiet transfer case equipped wîth a TORSEN® limited-slip differential (LSD) that is 30 percent lighter in size and weight than previous TORSEN systems. The LSD provides rear biased torque distribution of 40:60 during normal straight-line driving, automatically and continually adjusting power distribution according to changing speed and road conditions.
An eight-speed sequential braking mode, activated when the shift lever is in the ‘S’ position, allows eight different stages of response. When up-shifting, engine speed is controlled by the selected range, offering an exhilarating boost in acceleration during each of the eight ‘shift’ stages. When downshifting, brake-force increases to provide powerful deceleration. The driver can select ‘Hybrid’ (Normal), ‘Power,’ or ‘Snow’ modes to change the rate of throttle opening for a given throttle-pedal angle. The Hybrid mode provides the smoothest operation and is ideal for city or suburban driving; Power sharpens accelerator pedal response and Snow mode softens accelerator pedal response, making it easier to accelerate on slippery road surfaces. By pushing an EV switch, power reverts to full electric mode for short-distance, low-speed driving situations such as residential areas or parking garages.
Chassis/Body/Suspension/Tires/Brakes
Multi-link front and rear air-suspension systems help maintain superb vehicle posture and driving performance while maintaining the ultra-comfortable ride that is synonymous wîth all Lexus vehicles. The LS 600h L is equipped wîth large front- and rear-ventilated disc brakes and standard 19-inch, seven-spoke aluminum alloy wheels wîth all-season tires. These special wheels receive extensive buffing.
Electronic Power Steering (EPS) delivers a smooth §teering feel and reduces parasitic losses. Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) optimizes the §teering gear ratio according to vehicle speed, enhancing responsiveness and driver control. Networked wîth the Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system, VGRS can make minor adjustments to the front-wheel angle to help provide control in challenging road conditions.
Exterior
The LS 600h L flagship hybrid luxury sedan showcases the brand’s L-finesse design philosophy, revealing a family resemblance that conveys elegance, refinement and a strong emotional appeal. Minimal body gaps, a low front grille and deep-drawn fenders all contribute to the car’s distinctive, muscular profile. Lexus’ attention to detail is seen in the integrated dual chrome exhaust tips and the one-piece chrome window surround. Projector-type headlamps wîth blue crystal rings, which introduced the world’s first nighttime LED low beams, help provide excellent visibility and contribute to the design thémé. Blue accents on the headlamps, badging, engine cover and the SmartAccess key fobs and Smart Card key are unique to the LS 600h L – as are the blue-tinted taillamps.
Interior
Passenger space and comfort were the primary focus of the interior cabin design. Genuine semi-aniline leather is featured throughout the cabin, its rich appearance softened and structured wîth additional stitching to create a relaxed atmosphere. The leather trim extends beyond the seats and onto the instrument panel, upper front doors and door armrests. An Alcantara® headliner adds a pleasing touch point, and the center console is placed at the same height as the door armrests to enhance comfort and convenience. Additional luxury touches unique to the LS 600h L include a wood-trimmed and chrome-plated shift knob and wood-trimmed assist grips.
Luxury/Comfort/Convenience
The LS 600h L is based on the long-wheelbase LS chassis, providing nearly five inches more legroom than the standard LS 460 model. This flagship sedan provides the highest level of comfort and convenience features in the LS series. Standard features include a hard disk drive (HDD) Lexus Navigation system wîth a back-up camera, Bluetooth® phonebook download capability, Voice Command casual language voice-recognition system, and an integrated XM Radio receiver. Safety/Security Features
The VDIM system incorporates and manages all of the car’s dynamic handling sub-systems, including: Electronically Controlled Brake (ECB) system, EPS, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Antilock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and engine torque via the electronically controlled throttle. Monitoring a variety of sensors, the system anticipates the onset of a vehicle skid or slide while cornering, and helps correct the situation wîth a combination of braking, throttle and §teering control in a way that is essentially transparent to the driver. VSC can be turned off if desired via the Trac Off button for certain inclement conditions.
In addition to the active safety features, the LS 600h L is standard-equipped wîth eight airbags, wîth a maximum of 11 airbags available through option packages. The world’s first low-beam LED headlamps provide superior road illumination, and the standard Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) helps to illuminate a turn or curve as the driver steers into it. The available Advanced Pre-Collision System (APCS) was the world’s first system designed to detect and react to pedestrians in the vehicle’s path when it debuted on the 2009 Pebble Beach® Edition LS 600h L. This system is available for the LS 600h L (and the LS 460 models) wîth Lane Keep Assist. Úsing two small cameras mounted at the front of the car that work in conjunction wîth millimeter-wave radar, APCS is sensitive enough to detect certain nonmetallic objects.
As part of APCS, the LS also offers the Driver Attention Monitor System, which was another world first. A third camera, mounted on the §teering column, monitors the orientation of the driver’s face. If the camera detects that it appears the driver is not lòòking directly ahead for a few seconds or more, and if an obstacle is detected ahead, then it alerts the driver, first wîth a warning chime and a flashing light. As the car gets closer to the obstacle, APCS can begin to gently apply the brakes on its own. To help assist the driver in maneuvering around the obstacle, the system reprograms the §teering ratio, amplifying the intensity and quickness of the §teering response. At the same time, APCS automatically retracts the front seatbelts and prepares the brake system to respond wîth full force when activated by the driver in anticipation of a possible impact.

The Lexus LS 460 flagship luxury sedans continue to indulge drivers wîth incomparable comfort and performance. After significant changes in 2010 that included revised styling, electronics and the optional performance-tuned Sport Package, Lexus continues to offer the LS 460 and long-wheelbase LS 460 L, both available in rear-wheel drive (RWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD). For the 2011 model year, the LS receives changes to its suspension for all-wheel drive models, the addition of new standard Smart Stop Technology and the discontinuation of Truffle Mica exterior color.
For 2011, LS 460 AWD models will have standard coil suspension for comfortable everyday driving and available air suspension to allow drivers to adjust for their current driving situation. The LS luxury sedans also receive Smart Stop Technology as an additional measure of consumer confidence. The braking system enhancement will automatically reduce engine power when the brake pedal and the accelerator pedal are applied simultaneously under certain driving conditions.
Engine/Transmission/Drivetrain/Performance
The Lexus LS 460 models deliver the luxury of powerful, smooth performance from a 4.6-liter V8 teamed wîth an eight-speed automatic transmission. The engine produces 380 horsepower and 367 lb.-ft. of peak torque in rear-wheel-drive configuration; 357 horsepower and 344 lb.-ft. of torque wîth AWD. The LS V8′s superior performance is due in large part to innovative technologies, including the world’s first electric motor-driven Variable Valve Timing wîth intelligence and Electronically (VVT-iE) controlled intake cam. The electrically controlled intake achieves superior engine-startup operation and high-output performance. A dual fuel-injection system, wîth both port and direct injection, optimizes efficiency under all conditions.
The direct injection helps provide cylinder cooling that allows the high compression ratio (11.8:1) needed to produce such high power cleanly and efficiently. The dual-tract intake system and an Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS) contribute to the smooth, linear power delivery. The Lexus eight-speed automatic transmission allows gear ratios that maximize torque up to the tire-grip limitations in the lower ranges yet maintains quietness and admirable fuel efficiency at higher speeds. The LS 460 can accelerate from zero-to-60 mph in about 5.4 seconds; 5.9 seconds for the AWD models. Even wîth that level of performance, the LS 460 has earned an EPA-estimated 16 mpg city and 24 mpg highway rating (AWD is 16 city/23 highway) and meets Últra-Low Emissions Vehicle II (ÚLEV II) certification. An ECO drive indicator helps encourage economical driving.
The AWD versions of the LS 460 and LS 460 L utilize a drivetrain almost identical to their hybrid counterpart, the LS 600h L. The AWD system features a highly compact center TORSEN® limited-slip differential that distributes drive torque between the front and rear wheels. In normal driving conditions, the front and rear torque distribution ratio is set at a rear-bias 40:60, which aids agility. The system can instantly and optimally vary torque distribution between 30:70 and 50:50, depending on driving conditions, thus helping to ensure excellent traction performance and driving stability. The AWD models also have standard 18-inch wheels wîth all-season tires, and a wood and leather-trimmed heated §teering wheel for added luxury. All models offer the Cold Weather Package that includes a windshield deicer, upgraded battery, and more effective heater core.
Luxury/Comfort/Convenience
The LS 460 has numerous user-tech amenities for a comprehensive luxury package. The driver’s seat features a standard slide-away feature that makes ingress/egress more comfortable; a multi-information display uses a large center console LCD screen; and the available navigation system employs voice command casual-language based voice recognition and Bluetooth® phonebook download capability. The audio system features an integrated XM Radio receiver, music playing capability wîth Bluetooth audio streaming and ÚSB/iPod® connectivity. An iPod connected through the ÚSB port can be controlled through the §teering wheel audio controls or headunit.
The Lexus LS models continue a tradition of offering a comprehensive roster of true-luxury standard features. Customers can choose from four leather and wood-trimmed interior combinations. Pampering begins wîth a 16-way power driver’s seat and 12-way power front passenger seat, dual zone automatic climate control wîth smog sensor, and a power tilt/slide moonroof. For added comfort, AWD models also feature a standard heated §teering wheel. Controls in the LS 460 models provide the utmost convenience; including SmartAccess wîth push button start/stop, and a power tilt/telescoping §teering wheel wîth audio, brake hold and multi-information display controls. An automatic electric parking brake system eliminates the need to press a foot-operated pedal.
Interior
The thin film transistor multi-informational display and Optitron instrument cluster set the tone for blending functional high-tech wîth pleasing aesthetics. Tasteful wood and chrome trim as well as refinements to the interior lighting create a rich feeling, including LED ambient interior lighting wîth spot-lamp illumination in front and rear. Even the angles on the center console were optimized to enhance comfort for the driver and front passenger. As a further example of Lexus’ passionate attention to luxury detail, the LS §teering wheel is wrapped by supple, twice-buffed leather. The water-based dye used on the leather provides a more natural feel, and a whipstitch pattern ensures a smooth wheel surface without any unevenness or jumps in the stitch.
Exterior
The LS 460 flagship showcases the brand’s L-finesse design philosophy, revealing a family resemblance that conveys elegance, refinement and a strong emotional appeal. Minimal body gaps, a low front grille and deep-drawn fenders all contribute to the car’s distinctive, muscular profile. Lexus’ attention to detail is seen in the integrated dual chrome exhaust tips and the one-piece chrome window surround.
Chassis/Body/Suspension/Tires/Brakes
The LS 460 delivers the ultra-comfortable ride quality that has become synonymous wîth the Lexus flagship LS sedans. The air suspension system, which is optional on all-wheel drive models and the LS 460 L RWD, effectively helps control body lean to provide an extraordinarily smooth ride. The system offers three settings – including ‘Sport’ – allowing the driver to custom-tailor suspension response from maximum comfort to sharpest handling. The LS 460 has an impressive turning circle (curb to curb) – 35.4 ft. for the LS 460 RWD; 37.4 ft. for the LS 460 AWD; 36.1 ft. for the LS 460 L RWD and 38.7 ft. for LS 460 L AWD – that yields excellent maneuverability.
The Sport Package is the first of its kind for the LS and is available only on the LS 460 RWD model. Behind the 19-inch split 10-spoke forged alloy wheels are Brembo brakes, and the package tightens handling response wîth an exclusive sport-tuned air suspension wîth specific stabilizer bars and shock absorbers. In addition, this option features sporty exterior styling wîth a distinctive Aero kit. Inside the LS 460, the Sport Package adds an exclusive perforated Black/Saddle leather interior wîth sport front seats, a unique leather-trimmed §teering wheel and paddle shifters for the eight-speed automatic transmission wîth throttle blip downshifting.
The LS 460 AWD models and the LS 460 L are available wîth Variable Gear-Ratio Steering (VGRS), and Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS). The computer-controlled AVS system continuously adjusts shock-absorber damping rates to help provide comfort and handling precision. The VGRS system selects the §teering gear ratio according to vehicle speed, enhancing responsiveness and driver control. VGRS also partners wîth the Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system, making minor §teering adjustments to help improve control during challenging road conditions. The interior cabin of the LS demands not only exceptional silence, but the quality of the sounds have to be pleasing to the occupants. For example, engineers tuned the sound of the doors opening and closing by studying the sounds of skillfully crafted wood doors in luxury homes. Even the sounds of onboard motors for all the power assists were specially tuned. One example: one-touch power window motors that reduce speed near the closure point. Laminated side glass (front on LS 460 and front/rear on LS 460 L) further reduces outside noise intrusion.
Safety/Security Features
The Lexus LS 460 provides one of the most advanced and comprehensive integrations of vehicle-safety technology today. Active front headrests on all models are designed to help reduce the severity of whiplash-type injuries in certain rear end collisions. Active safety features include the VDIM system, which by itself integrates and manages the Electronically Controlled Brake (ECB) system, Electronic Power Steering (EPS), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), and engine torque via the electronically controlled throttle.
Taking input from an array of sensors in the vehicle, VDIM anticipates the onset of a vehicle skid or slide while cornering, and it then helps correct the condition wîth a combination of braking, throttle, and §teering control in a way that is essentially transparent to the driver. The VDIM system gathers data from more sources – processed earlier and more quickly than in previous dynamic handling systems – to help make operation in the LS 460 even more seamless and effective. If it becomes necessary to extricate the car from deep snow or other difficult conditions, such as mud or sand, the ‘TRAC off’ switch may be useful to turn off the VSC.
The LS 460 is standard-equipped wîth eight airbags, including side curtain airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags and knee airbags for the driver and front passenger. Rear seat-mounted side airbags are also available. Standard xenon high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps provide superior road illumination. The standard Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) helps to illuminate a turn or curve as the driver steers into it. The LS 460 and LS 460 L models offer Advanced Parking Guidance System (APGS) to assist wîth parallel and back-in parking. Once the driver has correctly positioned the car and identified the desired parking space via the navigation screen, APGS uses the rear back-up camera, parking sonar sensors and electric power §teering system to guide the car into the space. The driver controls vehicle speed via the brake.
The Lexus LS was among the first cars in the world to offer a Pre-Collision system, and offers the available Advanced Pre-Collision System (APCS). APCS is the world’s first reactive pedestrian system designed to help detect pedestrians in the vehicle’s path and to react by braking. Úsing two small cameras mounted at the front of the car that work in conjunction wîth millimeter-wave radar, APCS is sensitive enough to detect certain objects wîth low reflectivity or an object’s lateral position. As part of APCS, the Driver Attention Monitor System is also available on the LS 460 L. A camera mounted on the §teering column monitors the orientation of the driver’s face. If the camera detects that it appears the driver is not lòòking directly ahead for a few seconds or more, and/or if an obstacle is detected ahead, the system alerts the driver first wîth a warning chime and a flashing light.
As the car gets closer to the obstacle, APCS can begin to gently apply the brakes on its own. The system also prepares the brake system to respond wîth full force when activated by the driver and automatically retracts the front seatbelts in anticipation of a possible impact. To help assist the driver in maneuvering around the obstacle, the system reprograms the §teering ratio, amplifying the intensity and quickness of the §teering response. When equipped wîth APCS, the LS 460 L adds Lane Keep Assist (LKA) and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. The front-mounted cameras detect visible lane markings on the road, and if the system detects the driver drifting into another lane, it sounds a warning and can apply torque to the electric §teering system to help the driver stay in the intended lane.
