CHASSIS AND DRIVING DYNAMICS

The light, ultra-stiff all-aluminum monocoque body of the all-new XK forms a solid basis for the suspension components. The reduced body weight also allows other components to be located as required to deliver optimum weight distribution and avoid any compromises wîth optimum suspension layout. The XK uses Jaguar’s well proven and classically sporty combination of unequal length wishbones at the front and unequal length wishbones using the driveshafts as upper links at the rear. The body’s light weight and careful packaging provide the perfect platform for Jaguar’s renowned expertise in combining exceptional handling and roadholding wîth comfort and refinement.

In unison wîth this ultra-stiff body Jaguar is able to use a conventional, mechanically sprung suspension layout, wîth coil springs and telescopic dampers all round, that gives more natural, more positive feedback to the driver, exactly as a sports car should. That technology includes a new version of Jaguar’s Computer Active Technology Suspension ( CATS), which is a two-stage adaptive damping system that ensures the optimum balance between ride and handling whatever the road conditions or style of driving. The car’s pitch and yaw rates are measured using accelerometer sensors. That data, plus information on §teering wheel angle and brake demand, is processed by the control module, and electronically controlled hydraulic valves continuously vary the damper settings accordingly. In the previous XK, the CATS system adjusted front and rear dampers in pairs, limiting the control variation to pitch only. The all-new XK’s version controls all four dampers separately, which allows control of roll as well as pitch, for even better ride and handling balance, wîth a very sporty feel.

DESIGN

The all-new XK is visibly more assertive and sportier than the model it replaces, but in true Jaguar tradition it is also elegant, understated and mature. In hard-top guise it has classic, ground-hugging coupe proportions, wîth long hood, steeply raked windshield and rear window, arch-filling wheels, and minimal overhangs. The front-wing power vents are a new Jaguar styling signature recently seen on the special edition XJ Super V8 Portfolio; the distinctive oval grille opening, prominent hood power-bulge and practicality-enhancing rear Liftback all echo the classic E-type, while details like the sweeping front and rear light shapes and powerful stance catapult Jaguar sports car design firmly into the 21st century.

Inside the new XK, traditional craftsmanship and contemporary luxury materials, like finely stitched leather, contrast wîth a choice of more high-tech trim surfaces including metallic finishes. The layout is driver-focused and sporty, wîth excellent ergonomics and body-hugging seats, set low against the high waistline to give a strong ‘cockpit’ feel. With the new XK’s longer wheelbase, wider tracks and taller roofline, the 2+2 layout has significantly more interior space for front seat occupants than the XK that it replaces. Available in both two-door Coupe and Convertible forms, each model was developed in parallel under one umbrella program. The decision to give the Convertible version a classic soft-top rather than a folding hard-top means the open option offers exactly the same 2+2 seating layout, without compromising the elegant lines of the rear body, the strong, rising waistline or the light weight of the car.

The fully-lined triple-layer roof has exceptional wind and road noise isolation. It opens and closes at the touch of a button in less than 18 seconds, and when dropped it stows neatly below a rigid aluminum tonneau cover without unacceptable intrusion into the luggage space. Furthermore, the loadspace can be increased by approximately 3 cu. ft. (83 liters) by stowing the retractable loadspace separator when the Convertible roof is up. The use of a soft-top has also allowed the exterior body to be designed wîth much cleaner lines and a relatively low deck, meaning the door waist line can be carried right through the vehicle from the front of the car to the tail. The roof is constructed from three layers, which also insulate against wind and road noise. The outer layer is a completely waterproof cloth/rubber/cloth laminate, and the inner layer is a luxurious cloth lining which is taut and smooth when the roof is closed. The ‘sandwich filling’ is an insulation layer, using 3M Thinsulate™ material. This gives significantly better insulation for less than half the thickness of the previous XK soft-top construction. It is not only lighter, it takes up significantly less volume when the roof is stowed, allowing more space for passengers and luggage.

The rear window is made of toughened glass, wîth a heating element, and is bonded into the roof. The door glass automatically drops slightly as the doors are closed, and rises again to seal inside the roof water channels. Additionally, the Convertible’s rear windows can be lowered even when the roof is up. The soft-top is raised and lowered by a single press of a button, using hydraulic actuators and electronic controls. It will go from fully open to closed in under 18 seconds, which includes automatically raising the side windows and rear quarter glasses at the end of the cycle. When the soft-top is up, the profile has sleek, elegant lines and the ‘C’ pillar area visually fits comfortably over the rear wheels. Attention to detail is continued wîth a chrome finishing strip fitted to the door capping and continuing around the soft-top base.

The new XK was created by Jaguar’s new design team under the leadership of Design Director Ian Callum, to push Jaguar deeper into the 21st century. The new XK’s lines are bold and beautiful, powerful but elegant. In Ian Callum’s words, it looks ‘just like a Jaguar should – powerful and exciting. That power comes from a sense of tension, muscle and form and is very much part of the new design language we are creating.’ Although the new XK looks very compact, it has excellent luggage space. Even wîth the rear overhang being a full 4.8 inches shorter than the previous XK, the rear luggage volume is only 0.28 cu. ft. less, or 0.78 cu. ft. more when the optional run flat tires are specified – and of course it has gained the enormous benefit of the all-new Liftback design, which provides excellent access to the loadspace area.

INTERIOR

The interior of the new XK is as modern and forward-lòòking as the exterior, and designed specifically wîth the sporty, enthusiast driver in mind. It is roomy and comfortable, and in its choice of materials and equipment, it is genuinely a premium, luxury car. It was important that it displayed the understated craftsmanship and restrained contemporary luxury associated wîth Jaguar. But being a sports car there was no place for overly ornate or fussy design – ergonomics were more important. So the seats hold the driver and passengers firmly but comfortably, the interior has a light and airy ‘cockpit’ feel, and the lowered position of the instrument panel also gives a feeling of greater cabin space. That sense of well-being comes in part from the fact that the car is extremely roomy, and has the classic 2+2 sports car layout wîth individual sculpted seats in the rear. Compared to the previous generation XK, there is 2.32in more seat-track travel, 2.13in more front leg room, 0.8in more front head room and 1.4in more shoulder room. There is also better foot space all round, and Jaguar’s electronic parking brake liberates the space that was previously needed for the outboard handbrake lever. There are more interior stowage spaces, and the combination of more interior space plus longer seat travel makes rear seat access through the long doors easier.

The main instrument binnacle in front of the driver is designed to relate to the shape of the three-spoke §teering wheel and it houses two classic round dials flanking a 256-color Driver Information Center based on Thin Film Transistor technology. The speedometer and tachometer dials are backlit wîth green backgrounds and their pointers are illuminated wîth white light. The large, seven-inch center console touch-screen is a menu-driven information and control system. It is designed to offer the required number of functions, but wîth minimum distraction and complexity to the driver – so in each menu level a maximum of only five items is available for selection. For example, the first menu level allows the driver to select between climate, audio, navigation, telephone and vehicle settings. To make selection easier for some modes and to avoid distraction from the road, when the driver’s finger is close to but not touching one of the screen icons, that particular icon ‘grows’ and an audible indication of the selection is given, so the driver can touch the correct icon without even having to see it. Very importantly for safe and positive operation, there are ‘home’ and ‘back’ buttons, and two manual buttons below the screen for ‘home’ and ‘off’ functions at a single touch.

Where available, the center screen also incorporates the display for the standard DVD-based satellite navigation system, which is also controlled via the touch screen. A significant advance over previous systems is that as well as giving turn direction instructions, the new XK’s system also gives audible ‘towards’ information at junctions – to the main town or city indicated by the local signpost, or (on a local level) to the next street name. Full zip code-based information is a further enhancement from previous systems. As well as being a sports car, the new XK is a premium luxury car, and is equipped as such. Its sophisticated dual-zone climate control system (which can be regulated via the touch screen as well as by its conventional controls) has a comprehensive list of features including heating and cooling, humidity control which senses the risk of misting and switches to a dehumidified airflow to the windshield area, and automatic demisting after cold starts. The defrost function includes heated front and rear screens and heated mirrors. Heated seats (there’s even an optional heated leather §teering wheel) are controlled by the climate control system, and selectable from the central touch screen.

In the Convertible, a dedicated strategy operates when the car is being driven wîth the roof down, automatically changing the distribution of the airflow (warm or cool) to give more flow to the face vents. The new XK offers a choice between high- and optional premium-quality audio systems. The standard six-speaker high-spec system supports conventional audio CDs as well as discs containing MP3 digital files, and the single dash-mounted CD slot is actually a six-disc changer. The premium system, by Alpine, has eight speakers, a remote six-channel amplifier, 520 watt output and Dolby Pro Logic II Surround Sound. The built-in communication interface is Bluetooth-based, and can communicate wirelessly wîth compatible Bluetooth mobile phones – which only have to be in the passenger compartment, for instance in a brief case or jacket pocket. The completely hands-free system has volume and answer controls on the §teering wheel, and a ‘do not disturb’ mode to inhibit incoming calls when selected. The dialing keypad is contained in the touch screen and can be selected from the telephone menu; and the touch-screen can also display phone book and incoming call information.

The interior combines traditional luxury and high technology. The choice of materials was as important as the shapes, so it is important that they are seen – and details like the traditional stitching are an integral element of the design. There is a choice of two leather trims including Soft Grain, which can be extended as an option to cover the instrument panel top, door cappings and seats. There are two veneer options – Burl Walnut, and the much lighter, more modern Poplar wood. Where traditional wood veneers are specified, they are produced by Jaguar’s own highly specialized, in-house wood veneer department. For 2008, interior craftsmanship is elevated even further wîth the use of a new, richer headliner material called Morzine (in the XKR it’s a suede-like material called Alston). The XKR benefits from a unique sports seat design wîth additional lateral support for both the driver and front seat passenger. To distinguish the interior, an ‘R’ badge is featured on the headrests, tachometer, §teering wheel and gear selector. The design of the standard aluminum interior veneer is also unique to the XKR, featuring a unique ‘weave’ pattern. For 2008, it also features polished stainless steel pedals.

SAFETY

The 2008 XK is engineered to meet all worldwide impact requirements wîth only one design, and its effectiveness was proved using many computer-simulated and real world crash tests. Enhanced safety features play a major role, both for passenger and pedestrian protection and the new XK uses a passive bumper system, the design of which helps to mitigate pedestrian leg injury through the use of crushable foam and plastic covering. The new XK has comprehensive protection for driver and passengers, starting wîth the inherent strength of its all-aluminum body construction and effective energy absorbing deformation zones. It offers a driver airbag which senses seating position, whether the driver is wearing a safety belt and the severity of any impact, and deploys the airbag accordingly. It has a passenger front airbag that helps minimize injury even if the passenger is sitting awkwardly or too close to the airbag, and there are two combined front-seat head and thorax side airbags developed to help protect occupants in the event of impacts wîth larger vehicles and stationary objects such as poles.

The XK is also fitted wîth Jaguar’s Protec® dynamic head restraint system, which is designed to minimize whiplash injuries in the event of an impact from behind, by automatically pushing the head restraint forward to support the head and reduce the risk of injuries to the neck. It also has LATCH child-seat fixings in both rear seats, plus a top tether that gives additional security in fixing LATCH-compatible child seats. Although they are not a legal requirement, the Convertible features a Roll-over Protection Device consisting of two aluminum hoops that are automatically deployed if the car’s sensors detect the onset of a roll-over accident. That creates a protected area between the hoops and the reinforced windscreen structure around the restrained occupants. The system is deployed by an advanced solid-state gyro sensor system. It also has a patented design to allow it to deploy through the rear window area if the roof is up, so the lines of the car have not been compromised by the inclusion of this safety system.

SECURITY

The new XK features two-stage unlocking, which unlocks the driver’s door wîth one push of the unlock button and the passenger door wîth a second push. Amongst the user-friendly advanced technologies in the all-new XK is the Jaguar Smart Key System, which provides Keyless Start wîth a push-button starter, and keyless entry simply by carrying the Jaguar Smart Key in your pocket or bag.

Jaguar sports cars have a reputation for blending athletic high-performance with effortless cruising comfort. Nothing exemplifies this dual character more clearly than the XK’s 5.0-litre AJ-V8 engine.

Now in its third generation this offers not only tremendous power but also great efficiency by incorporating the very latest technology including spray-guided direct injection (SGDI) and dual independent variable cam timing (DIVCT). Like the car itself, the engine is constructed from high-grade, lightweight aluminium, which in the cylinder heads is recycled to reduce the environmental impact of manufacture.

All variants of the Jaguar XK use the six-speed ZF automatic gearbox with steering wheel-mounted paddles to control the Jaguar Sequential Shift function for greater driver control. In the XKR the transmission has been revised in line with the increased power and torque to optimise upshifts and allow for the increased top speed.

In the latest Jaguar XKR, the cabin has been refreshed with a host of new trim materials including ebony soft-feel paint for the switches, gloss black finish to the centre console and phosphor blue halo illumination and ambient lighting. New veneers, colour combinations and headlining options allow owners to create a cabin ambience precisely matching their requirements.

Design

The XK was the first car created entirely under the aegis of Design Director Ian Callum. Dramatic and purposeful, yet as sensuous as only a Jaguar can be, the XK now receives a number of revisions that reinforce its contemporary, assertive character.

The latest lighting technology has allowed the front headlamps to be made slimmer and at the same time incorporate LED signal functions and running lights. Combined with a larger grille and new bumper design, this gives the XK instant ‘rear-view mirror’ recognition. Unmistakably a Jaguar, each model in the range gains unique styling attributes that distinguish it from its siblings. Chrome mesh grilles on the XK are replaced with matt black detailing on the XKR while the flagship XKR-S receives a unique front bumper underlining its sense of purpose.

The power vent along the front wing has been altered from a vertical to horizontal design with a mesh insert. Emblazoned with the Jaguar name, it serves to emphasise the potential inherent in the XK’s design. To the rear, the boot lid has been revised with a slimmer chrome finisher which allows the car to be graced by the famous Jaguar ‘leaper’, bringing it into line with the rest of the company’s products.

Complementing the design changes are 17 paint colours, five of which are new and a range of alloy wheels that now total 11 different designs ranging in size from 18 to 20 inches. A further opportunity for owners to express their individuality is available through the ‘Black Pack’, now also available as an option on the naturally aspirated cars as well as the XKR. This replaces exterior chrome with a matt black finish, complemented by 20-inch gloss black alloy wheels. On the XKR, the package also includes body coloured aerodynamic enhancements and optional side graphics.

Luxury and Performance

Adaptive Dynamics performs three main functions; controlling vertical body movement, roll and pitch rates. One hundred times every second, Adaptive Dynamics analyses the thousands of inputs and variables which determine ride and handling characteristics. By also monitoring wheel position 500 times every second, the system is able to achieve the famous Jaguar duality between comfort and sporting appeal. Should the driver wish to alter these characteristics, there is the option of Dynamic Mode, which increases body control, sharpens throttle response and reduces gearshift times.

The two supercharged variants of the XK also benefit from Jaguar’s Active Differential Control technology. This uses a multiplate clutch to vector torque to the driven wheel with the most grip. Allied to the ABS and stability control, this allows for the ultimate in traction and precision both mid-corner and at its exit. Non-supercharged models use a mechanical differential, which delivers outstanding levels of grip and stability under power.

All models benefit from the Dynamic Stability Control system which offers four modes: normal, Winter, TracDSC and DSC Off, allowing the enthusiastic driver to choose the level of intervention dependent on road conditions. The XKR-S model enhances both these electronic systems and the inherent stiffness of the lightweight aluminium architecture to create the most dynamic and exciting Jaguar yet.

Powertrain and Dynamics

Suspension

The double wishbone front suspension has been comprehensively revised with a new fully-machined steering knuckle. This significantly increases camber and castor stiffness by 0.13 degrees per kilonewton to transform the accuracy and weighting of the steering for greater levels of connection, feedback and precision. Rear suspension geometry has been revised with rear wheel steer optimised for maximum agility while spring rates have been increased at both ends of the car by 28 percent.

The Active Differential has been programmed to reduce steering sensitivity at the very high speeds of which the car is capable, increasing stability and driver control. Bespoke software for Jaguar’s Adaptive Damping has been written for the XKR-S, ensuring both total body control and maximum traction and grip. Changes to the TracDSC mode alters intervention levels to allow the experienced driver to explore the outer edges of the performance envelope, rewarded by the motorsport inspired soundtrack from the exhaust, which features an active pneumatic valve.

The suspension changes and Performance exhaust system are available as part of the Dynamic Pack option for the XKR model. The XKR-S encompasses everything a performance Jaguar should be; as capable, precise and thrilling on your drive home as it is at the Nürburgring. Every response delay has been minimised in order to give the car a more connected feel in the manner in which it steers, handles, stops and goes.

The XF, which has won more than 80 awards around the world for both its performance and styling, now receives bold new front and rear revisions to its appearance that bring it in line with the flagship XJ.The supercharged XFR features further uniquely dramatic design enhancements that signal the performance available in this potent range-topper. Major technical advances include an all-new, state-of-the-art 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine in the XF, which comes with a fuel and emissions-saving Intelligent Stop/Start system for the first time in a Jaguar.

This market specific version of the XF will be the most fuel-efficient vehicle in the Jaguar line-up – achieving 52.3mpg* combined and 149g/km CO2 – while retaining the performance and refinement that make it stand out as a true Jaguar sports saloon. For the flagship Jaguar XJ luxury saloon, a suite of enhancements to the interior and options list includes a new Rear Seat Comfort package, which incorporates electric recline, lumbar adjustment and massage functions to reinforce the ultimate executive limousine experience.

These three cars are the result of a design and technology revolution at Jaguar, led by award-winning Design Director Ian Callum, the architect of the company’s future success: ‘The world has been introduced to an entirely new generation of Jaguars in the past few years. With the new product range, today’s Jaguar is at full-strength for the first time. The 2012 XK, XF and XJ are design-led products that break new boundaries. We believe our cars resonate with customers on an emotional level and that’s reflected both in the way they drive and the way they look.’

The original XJ was the last car designed by Jaguar founder Sir William Lyons and the latest car to wear the nameplate is as innovative, beautiful and desirable as its famous forebear.Revolutionary, not evolutionary, the XJ is truly a product of the 21st century and is the clearest indication yet of the singular sense of purpose behind Design Director Ian Callum’s vision for the future of Jaguar. The unique full-length panoramic glass roof that floods the cabin with natural light allows the XJ to offer an unrivalled sense of spaciousness and occasion for driver and passengers and at the same time retain the sleek coupé-like profile and lithe stance for which Jaguars are famous. The mould- breaking styling is matched by similarly impressive construction techniques pioneered by Jaguar.

The lightweight aluminium structure – 50 percent of which is made from recycled materials – offers improved fuel consumption and reduced emissions. In conjunction with a lifecycle approach to design and manufacture this allows the XJ to minimise its carbon footprint. The weight saved by the use of aluminium – an average of 150kg compared to its rivals – also has benefits for performance and agility and is complemented by the most advanced, powerful and efficient Jaguar powertrains ever. The choice of engines has been enlarged for the 2012 range with the fitment of a 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine (market specific). All engines are coupled to a shift-by-wire, six-speed automatic transmission controlled by the JaguarDrive Selector or §teering wheel-mounted paddles. The cabin of the XJ blends elegant, contemporary design with the comfort, luxury and unmistakable sporting style of a Jaguar.

Chrome and piano black detailing provides an eye-catching contrast to the beautifully-crafted leather and wood veneer surfaces. Both standard and long-wheelbase models are available, for an even more sumptuous and refined experience for rear seat passengers. Advanced new technology has allowed Jaguar’s interior designers to create an environment more akin to a state-of-the-art living space than a car cabin. Stunning 12.3-inch high-definition virtual instruments complement an innovative Dual-view 8-inch Touch-screen that allows the passenger to view DVD movies or TV programmes while the driver is provided with vehicle functions or satellite-navigation directions.

Premium surround sound options include the top-of-the-range 1200W Bowers & Wilkins system that is comparable in audio quality to the best in-home entertainment. Advanced infotainment features also include hard-drive based audio and navigation systems and comprehensive connectivity for portable audio and video devices via the powerful Media Hub. Subtle enhancements to the cabin are now available for the 2012 XJ range to allow greater personalisation and flexibility of use.

A new Rear Comfort Pack offers seats that now feature electric adjustment of the backrest recline angle, four-way lumbar support and a massage function. Increased comfort is also provided by new winged headrests, footrests and the ability for the front passenger seat to be stowed away forwards when unoccupied to increase legroom even further. On the long-wheelbase Portfolio derivative a new ‘Executive Pack’ transforms the rear of the XJ into a high-speed mobile office space with the provision of fold-down laptop trays and an electric rear sunblind for increased privacy. The package also includes upgraded carpeting, combination wood and leather §teering wheel, gloss wood veneer choices and chrome mirror housings.

Jaguar has always listened closely to customer feedback and in the case of the XJ, this has led to a new interior colour combination. Available with the Premium Luxury and Portfolio trim levels the Jet/Ivory option features ivory seating with contrast jet stitching, piping and upper surfaces while the headlining is available in either colour, according to customer preference. All XJ variants are now available with an Illumination Package derived from that offered as standard on the Supersport model. This comprises illuminated treadplates, boot latch and front and rear air vents.

A saloon with the soul of a Jaguar sports car, the XF has won accolades and enthusiastic fans across the globe for its dynamic abilities and dramatic looks. Advances in lighting technology have allowed the new 2012 XF model range to adopt the bold Jaguar design language introduced on the flagship XJ saloon.

Sheetmetal revisions to the grille, bonnet and front wings incorporating new triangular side vents give the car a more muscular, purposeful appearance. The range-topping XFR receives its own unique, overtly assertive design to underline its performance potential while an alternative ‘Aerodynamic’ option is available on all other derivatives for a total of three dramatically different styling options.

The headlamps now incorporate bi-function HID xenon technology that allows them to be much slimmer and more compact while still providing outstanding beam resolution. They also incorporate LED daytime running lights arranged in a distinctive Jaguar ‘J-Blade’ signature pattern for instant recognition.

The tail lamps have been entirely renewed and now extend onto the central portion of the boot lid. These new units are now full-LED for stop, light and indicator functions and give the XF a distinctive night-time rear signature. Separating them is a revised boot lid finisher with a gloss black lower edge for a cleaner appearance. The boot also features power closure on all models.

Three new paint colours and an expanded alloy wheel selection ranging from 17 to 20-inch provide the finishing touches to the revised styling. ‘The XF has rightly been recognised as a quintessential Jaguar saloon. It is purposeful yet elegant, with inherent sporting intent in its design. For the latest version we have been able to evolve and enhance that performance character to make the XF the most visually dynamic car in its class.’

Key among the enhancements to XF is the introduction of the 2.2-litre AJ-i4D turbodiesel engine. The unit features low-friction pistons and a water-cooled turbocharger to increase efficiency plus active engine mounts and modifications to the sump and block to reduce NVH levels. The result is not only Jaguar’s most fuel-efficient engine ever, but one which offers levels of refinement on a par with the previously-fitted 2.7-litre V6 diesel and all the performance expected of a Jaguar sports saloon. Further refinement is assured on all models by the use of additional acoustic shielding and the use of computational fluid dynamics to smooth exterior airflow.

Power output is 190PS with an impressive torque figure of 450Nm to provide the muscular performance expected of a Jaguar. Reaching 60mph in 8.0 seconds, the car will go on to achieve a top speed of 140mph. Nevertheless the unit still manages 52.3mpg on the EÚ combined cycle – making it the most economical Jaguar ever – and emits just 149g/km of CO2 and is Euro Stage V compliant.

The engine is perfectly complemented by the all-new 8-speed ZF automatic gearbox. Specifically adapted by our engineers for its first-time application in a Jaguar, the transmission offers a host of benefits including both improved acceleration and economy. Gearchanges are completed in just 200 milliseconds – four times faster than the average human resting heartbeat – while driver control is enhanced by the ability to perform multiple downshifts using the paddleshift technology. The use of lightweight materials ensures the overall weight remains the same as the previous six-speed transmission, while improved pump design and gear control elements increase efficiency. Standard on all XF diesel models, it reduces the CO2 emissions of the 3.0-litre V6 to 169g/km and improves fuel consumption to 44.8mpg.

Whether experienced from the driver or passenger seat, the cabin of the XF is a uniquely welcoming and stylish place in which to spend time, using high-end materials in a truly contemporary manner. Continuing to feature such dramatic ‘surprise and delight’ elements as the JaguarDrive Selector that rises from the centre console and air vents that rotate to their open position when the starter button is pressed, the XF interior has also received a comprehensive update.

Also making its debut with the 2.2-litre diesel engine is Jaguar’s new Intelligent Stop/Start system, the first time this technology has been seen in a premium diesel saloon. This automatically shuts down the engine in just 300 milliseconds when the car comes to rest, in order to improve fuel economy and CO2 emissions by between five and seven percent.

No driver intervention is necessary, with the engine management software analysing a host of complex factors in order to decide when the engine can safely be stopped. A Tandem Solenoid Starter with a dedicated secondary battery instantly restarts the engine as soon as the driver’s foot leaves the brake pedal, ensuring it is running optimally by the time the accelerator is pressed. In order to facilitate this process, the gearbox features Hydraulic Impulse Storage, which supplies oil pressure to actuate the shift elements.

For the first time, all diesel variants are also available with Jaguar’s Adaptive Dynamics system, allowing the enthusiastic driver to enjoy the car’s outstanding chassis control and discover the XF’s sporting soul.

Revised front and rear seats incorporate a ‘hoop’ feature on both squab and backrest that improves not only their appearance but also the support it offers by increasing the seat’s profile. New hide colour combinations, veneers and headlining choices increase the personalisation options available to buyers. All models benefit from a revision to the colour scheme on the centre console, fascia and §teering wheel where the ‘Tungsten’ finish is replaced by a more contemporary ‘Aurora’ thémé.

The XF incorporates a formidable amount of technology but in true Jaguar fashion it is integrated seamlessly into the function of the car and controlled through a central seven-inch Touch-screen with a new polarising filter for better contrast viewing. In order to reduce driver workload, additional switches have been added below the Touch-screen to instantly switch between different functions while new graphics are based on those in Jaguar’s flagship XJ. The main driver instrument cluster is now a full-colour TFT unit for greater resolution and clarity.

Three new audio systems are offered on the XF, all of which represent a significant upgrade on those previously available. Heading this up is a 1200W, 17-speaker premium set-up, from British audio experts Bowers & Wilkins, which offers concert hall-like sound reproduction.

All audio systems can be specified with a hard-drive based satellite navigation system that incorporates a ‘virtual’ CD multichanger allowing the owner to ‘rip’ 10 CDs at a time into the car’s memory storage and play them as if they were a physical music medium. The system also now offers a number of different options for connecting MP3 players; two ÚSB ports, one of which is iPod specific and Bluetooth connectivity that allows music to be streamed from a smartphone.

The majority of the car’s functions can also be controlled from the driver’s seat by Jaguar’s Interactive Voice functionality, which provides an intuitive interface for safe, hands-free operation.
