The new Terrain brings GMC’s history of innovation and engineering excellence into a smaller, fuel-efficient package for today’s buyer,’ said Susan Docherty, Buick-Pontiac-GMC vice president. ‘The capability attributes that make a vehicle a GMC are ingrained in Terrain, making it an appealing choice for existing traditional SÚV customers who are lòòking for distinctive styling and increased efficiency.
A new, 2.4L four-cylinder engine that features direct injection is expected to deliver best-in-§egmènt highway fuel economy of 30 mpg. Maximum fuel economy is achieved in part with an ‘ECO’ mode that is activated via a console-mounted button. When engaged, it lowers the torque converter lockup speed to 1,125 rpm to help save fuel on models equipped with the 2.4L engine.
Also available will be a 3.0L DOHC direct injected V-6 engine delivering an estimated 264 horsepower (197 kW). Both engines are mated to efficiency-enhancing six-speed automatic transmissions and offer a refined, confident driving experience.
‘GMC is a strong, core brand for GM and the Terrain crossover SÚV is the latest example of how we’re adapting to changing market conditions,’ said Docherty. ‘As we first demonstrated with the Acadia crossover, GMC is committed to offering the capable vehicles customers seek, with the personal technologies they expect.’ The 2010 Terrain goes on sale in late summer, with front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive models offered in SLE and SLT trim levels.
Price: $24,250 – 29,200.
Invoice: $22,920 – 27,595.
Segment-best safety is anticipated, with features that include four-wheel disc brakes with StabiliTrak electronic stability control and traction control, as well as six standard air bags: dual frontal air bags; head curtain side air bags and pelvic/thorax seat-mounted side air bags. OnStar with one-year Safe and Sound service is also standard.
Interior
The Terrain’s rich, premium interior is influenced by industrial sculpture and exudes refinement exemplified by contrast stitching and fine materials that create a structured look throughout the cabin. A ‘floating’ center stack, highlighted by warm ambient lighting, houses a multitude of ergonomic comfort and convenience controls.
The Terrain also features great attention to detail, with smart use of storage space and compartments that are suitable for a variety of items. They include an oversized glove box; a closed storage area in the instrument panel above the center stack; a closed storage compartment under the center armrest large enough for a laptop computer; and two-tier storage in the doors.
Terrain’s seats were developed to provide outstanding comfort and the standard MultiFlex sliding rear seat can be moved fore or aft nearly eight inches (200 mm), providing increased passenger comfort or greater rear cargo capacity. The 60/40-split rear seatback offers additional configurations for passengers and cargo; and the rear cargo area offers 31.6 cubic feet (894 liters) of storage, as well as one of the Terrain’s four auxiliary power outlets.
Styling
Terrain has a balanced, athletic stance and offers a commanding view of the road. Its design is characterized by bold, muscular fender flares, representing GMC’s aesthetic. Surfacing is angular yet refined, with a strong and capable front-end appearance that features precise, squared-off edges.
‘We wanted to carve the GMC Terrain away from the pack and establish its identity as a powerful, fresh crossover SÚV with a confident and strong stance,’ said John Cafaro Jr., director of exterior design, Global Crossover Vehicles. ‘Everything about the Terrain communicates a sense of tailored toughness and passionate craftsmanship.’
Additional design features include a unique, three-element grille that is accented by a prominent chrome surround and projector-beam headlamps mounted in large, rectangular housings with chrome accents.
Driving Experience
Two new engines are offered on all Terrain models, each with fuel-saving direct injection and variable valve timing technology. Vehicle highlights include:
• New 3.0L DOHC direct injected V-6 engine estimated at 264 horsepower (197 kW), which delivers an estimated 25 mpg highway, 18 mpg city (EPA certification pending).
• New 2.4L Ecotec direct injected I-4 engine estimated at 182 horsepower (136 kW) that delivers an estimated 30 mpg highway, 21 mpg city (EPA certification pending)
• Driving range of more than 500 miles (800 km) with both engines, for less-frequent fill-ups
The powertrains are mounted on a rigid, body-integral structure, with single-piece body side stampings and targeted applications of high-strength steel. It is the foundation of a confident driving experience that is both smooth and responsive.
GM’s first application of Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) technology is used on 2.4L-equipped models. ANC uses microphones to detect booming sounds inside the vehicle and sends counteracting sound waves through the audio system’s speakers, ensuring a quiet driving experience at almost all vehicle speeds.
The Terrain rides on a 112.5-inch (2,857 mm) wheelbase and features a four-wheel independent suspension system, with wide front and rear tracks that enhance the ride and handling. A family of 17-inch, 18-inch aluminum and 19-inch chrome-clad wheels is available.
Terrain’s rack-mounted electric power §teering system provides greater fuel efficiency on four-cylinder-equipped models, saving nearly 11 miles per tank of gas.

The 2010 GMC Acadia lineup gains a new base trim level. This crossover SUV shares its basic design with the Chevrolet Traverse and premium-midsize Buick Enclave. Mid-line SLE and top-end SLT models are joined for 2010 by the base SL. All Acadias are available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The sole powertrain is a 288-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 engine and 6-speed automatic transmission.
Maximum towing capacity is 5,200 pounds. Eight-passenger seating is available, and it comes via a 2nd-row bench seat in place of buckets. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, front-side airbags, and curtain-side airbags.
Available features include a “skyscape” dual sunroof with a large tilt and slide front panel and a fixed rear glass skylight. Also available are a wireless cell-phone link, heated and cooled front seats, and satellite radio with real-time traffic updates.
Invoice: $29,994 – $38,353.
The Acadia offers better-than-expected acceleration both around town and on the highway, but front-drive models are slightly quicker from a stop. The transmission shifts smoothly but is often caught in too high a gear. A prod of the throttle sometimes results in slow downshifts for passing power.
FUEL ECONOMY
No opportunity to measure an Acadia, but a similar AWD Chevrolet Traverse averaged 16.8 mpg in mostly city driving. Acadia uses regular-grade gas.
RIDE QUALITY
With the standard 18-inch tires, Acadia is comfortably composed and controlled. The optional 19s make the ride noticeably stiffer, though not unbearably so.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
Front-drive versions are impressively stable and agile for a vehicle this size. AWD models–even with the optional 19-inch tires–feel a bit less nimble but benefit from added traction on slick surfaces. Acadia is difficult to maneuver in tight spaces due to its long, wide body.
QUIETNESS
Very little road rumble, though the 19-inch tires thump slightly over bumps. Wind noise is low, with only a muted whistle from the outside mirrors at highway speeds. Acadia’s quiet, refined engine growls pleasantly under brisk acceleration.
CONTROLS
Day or night, Acadia’s luminous gauges are easy to read. The optional head-up display projects vehicle speed and other readings on the windshield. The audio controls are easy to reach. The optional navigation system absorbs most audio functions but doesn’t complicate their use. Climate controls are mounted lower but within easy reach, though their push buttons are less convenient than rotary knobs.
DETAILS
Though there are few padded surfaces, bright accents and richly grained plastics give the interior an inviting look. Build quality has been good, but one test model suffered from a rattle in the rear seating area.
FRONT/REAR
Plenty of headroom and legroom. The seats are generally supportive and comfortable, though shorter drivers may find the seat cushions too long. Thick roof pillars block the view to the front corners and over the left shoulder. Acadia’s high belt line in back makes backing up tricky. Fortunately, rear-obstacle detection and a rearview camera are standard on the SLE and SLT, though they’re not offered on the SL, even as options.
Easy entry through large doors, and Acadia’s Smart Slide 2nd-row seats tilt and slide forward to ease access to 3rd row. Whether buckets or bench, the 2nd-row seats slide fore and aft about 3 inches to benefit either 2nd- or 3rd-row legroom. With the 2nd row slid forward, the 3rd row can accommodate 6 footers–though they’ll ride knees-up. Foot space can be tight in either row.
CARGO ROOM
Acadia’s cargo volume is the largest among midsize SUVs, rivaling that of many large SUVs. There’s more usable space behind the raised 3rd-row seat than in most midsize SUVs, plus an underfloor bin. Both the 2nd- and 3rd-row seats fold forward easily to form a flat, nearly level surface. An optional power tailgate is a handy feature. Several bins and cubbies provide good interior storage.
VALUE
Acadia is tailor-made for buyers who need a minivan but don’t want to drive one. This Best Buy crossover is dynamically capable, comes standard with a host of safety features, and offers several unusual and useful options. Though we consider it a midsize, those shopping large SUVs will find Acadia a more efficient alternative.

For improved fuel economy, Yukon and Yukon XL models feature a 5.3L V-8 with GM’s fuel-saving Active Fuel Management technology. The 5.3L and 6.2L engines are capable of running on E85; in fact, all Yukon 4WD and Yukon XL half-ton models come standard with the E85-capable version of the 5.3L V-8. GM vehicles with E85 capability can run on 100-percent gasoline, E85 or any combination of the two.
Price: $38,535 – 61,365.
Invoice: $35,835 – 57,985.
Interior
The Yukon and Yukon XL are available in two trim levels: SLE (cloth) and SLT (leather). Both feature a spacious and refined environment, thanks to a premium tone-on-tone color scheme and a lower-positioned instrument panel. A third-row seat is standard on all Yukon models. Sculpted seat designs and detailed trim affirm the vehicles’ craftsmanship, which is bolstered by optional amenities such as heated seats for first- and second-row passengers. Also, the front seats offer plenty of fore/aft and recline travel, and the second-row seats have a comfortable angle for the seatback recline.
Craftsmanship is seen in unexpected areas, such as distinctive sill plates that greet occupants when the doors are opened, and there are no exposed fasteners or hardware on the pillars, seats or seat tracks. The seats have ‘close-outs’ that surround the seat bottoms and seat tracks, creating a more finished appearance. The undersides of the seats are covered, too, when folded.
The Yukon and Yukon XL also offer an industry-exclusive power fold-and-tumble second-row seat feature that eases access to the third-row seat. The power fold-and-tumble second-row seats feature release buttons accessible by the driver on the overhead console or on the interior C-pillar to provide an easy, immediate release of the seat and an access path to the third-row seat or cargo area.
Yukon and Yukon XL interiors are versatile, too. The third-row seats fold flat and are easily tumbled forward or removed for maximum cargo area. Also, the center console storage compartment, at 20.1 liters of capacity, is the §egmènt’s largest. The glove box offers significant storage space, too, and features damped opening operation that bolsters quietness and refinement.
Driving Experience
The Yukon and Yukon XL, available in 2WD and 4WD, are built on GM’s full-size SÚV platform, which incorporates features such as a fully boxed frame, coil-over-shock front suspension and rack-and-pinion §teering. The frame supports wide front and rear tracks that enhance stability and driving confidence through a more secure road feel and a lower center of gravity.
Yukon rides on a 116-inch (2,946 mm) wheelbase, with an overall length of 202 inches (5,130 mm). Its wide track complements the long wheelbase to provide a smooth, confident and secure driving experience. Yukon XL models have exterior dimensions similar to the regular models, but are about 14 inches longer in wheelbase and 20 inches longer in overall length. The front suspension consists of a coil-over-shock design that delivers linear, solid and unwavering ride and handling characteristics on all road surfaces.
A rack-and-pinion §teering system provides precise and responsive control and enhanced on-center feel. Yukon and Yukon XL models use a highly refined five-link rear suspension that provides superior isolation and ride, with larger, firmer brackets that also contribute to the vehicles’ precise driving manners.
Large, four-wheel disc brakes and a sophisticated ABS system ensure shorter braking distances and §egmènt-leading performance. Larger vented front and rear brake rotors, stiff dual-piston calipers and long-life brake pads contribute to enhanced pedal feel, reduced brake noise and predictable, linear brake response. A Bosch 8.0 next-generation four-channel ABS system is standard. The ABS system works with the standard StabiliTrak electronic stability control system with traction control. It incorporates rollover mitigation – software algorithm technology that uses sensors to proactively predict vehicle ‘tip-up,’ and applies appropriate brake forces to help prevent such events.
Enhanced driving control and ride smoothness are offered with the available Autoride real-time damping system (standard on Denali), which uses electronically controlled shock absorbers to make nearly instantaneous damping adjustments. The system ‘reads’ the road and anticipates the best damping rates. Eighteen-inch wheels are standard on Yukon and Yukon XL 2WD models, with 17-inch wheels standard on 4WD. Twenty-inch wheels are available – including a chrome-clad design. The tires are tailored to the vehicles to provide excellent balance of handling, quietness and safety. Yukon HD comes standard with 17-inch wheels, while the Yukon Denali lineup is equipped with 20-inch wheels.
Safety
The Yukon and Yukon XL offer a 360-degree perimeter safety system of occupant protection and crash avoidance technologies. Standard features include head curtain side air bags for all seating rows and front-seat safety belt pretensioners that are linked to the vehicle’s sensing system to provide §egmènt-exclusive deployment in rear-end crashes. These features are integrated into a stronger vehicle structure that is also designed for improved compatibility with other vehicles.
The head curtain air bags include design features that provide increased rollover protection and occupant containment. Sensors located at the front of the vehicle, in the side doors, and within the occupant compartment provide increased and more immediate crash detection. The vehicle’s sensing system provides §egmènt-exclusive capability to deploy front seat safety belt pretensioners during certain rear-end collisions, enhancing the belt system’s ability to hold the occupants firmly in place.
The head curtain side air bag system incorporates one of the §egmènt’s first rollover indication sensors, which is located on the vehicle’s center tunnel in the occupant compartment. The sensor monitors the vehicle’s acceleration and roll rate. If these signals indicate an impending rollover, the roof-mounted head curtain side air bags deploy to provide an extra measure of occupant protection and containment. These head curtain side air bags stay inflated longer than air bags developed only for side impacts because rollover incidents can last longer. The deployment duration and other design features of the head curtain air bags combine to provide increased occupant protection and the ability to help keep occupants inside the vehicle.
2011 GMC Acadia

Categories: GMC Tags: 2011 GMC Acadia, Fastest Cars, GMC Acadia, GMC Acadia Cars, Latest Cars
The Acadia is offered in two cloth trims, SL and SLE, and leather trims designated SLT1 and SLT2. All models are available in front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive with seven- or eight-passenger seating configurations. A comprehensive safety system includes six standard air bags and standard StabiliTrak electronic stability control system with traction control and rollover mitigation technology.
Acadia’s body-frame integral structure enables lower entry/exit height for passengers. Despite the vehicle’s SUV-like front-end height, the front door step-in height is only 18.9 inches (480 mm); the rear door step-in height is 19.8 inches (503 mm). Entry to the second- and third-row seats is easy with very wide rear doors and GM’s exclusive Smart Slide second-row seat feature.
All models are powered by a 3.6L V-6 VVT engine that uses gasoline direct injection technology to optimize performance and fuel economy. The engine is paired with Acadia’s fuel-saving six-speed automatic transmission to help give FWD models an EPA-estimated 24 mpg on the highway. The Acadia also is capable of towing up to 5,200 pounds (2364 kg), when properly equipped.
Acadia’s interior exudes refinement and attention to detail, with many thoughtful features designed into a finely crafted environment. A car-like ‘low and away’ instrument panel enhances the feeling of openness in the front-row seats and provides a commanding outward view. The instrument panel and other interior elements feature high-quality, low-gloss materials and tight gap tolerances.
Price: $31,845 – 45,225.
Seating and Storage
All Acadia models offer three rows of seating that can be configured for seven or eight passengers, regardless of the trim level. The seating configurations include two front bucket seats, a 60/40-split second-row bench (three passengers) or two second-row captain’s chairs (two passengers) and a 60/40-split third-row bench seat. Generous storage space of 24.1 cu. ft. (682 liters) is available behind the third-row seat (with the cargo management removed).
GM’s exclusive Smart Slide feature is standard on all second-row configurations, allowing quick and easy access to the third-row seating area. The second-row seat cushion flips up while the seatback slides forward, effectively compressing the space occupied by the seat with the pull of a lever. The Smart Slide system also allows the second row to be positioned fore/aft. When adjusted rearward, the second-row seat provides more legroom for taller passengers; when adjusted forward, it provides more storage space or additional legroom for third-row passengers. Seating space is sufficient for adults in all positions.
Access to the third-row seat also is aided by Acadia’s rear door width, which is wider than the doors on most other SUVs. The vehicle’s long wheelbase also enables greater accessibility. The rear door opening was maximized by reducing the space between the rear door and the leading edge of the door opening. Engineers were able to maximize the opening space while providing optimal chassis integrity for maximum occupant protection.
Along with comfort and ease of entry, Acadia’s interior offers generous cargo room, including 115.9 cu. ft. (1,382 L) when the second- and third-row seats are folded flat and the cargo management removed. Additional storage is also available in a covered rear cargo convenience center behind the third row that allows items to be stored out of sight beneath the rear cargo floor.
Ride and Handling
Acadia rides on a long 118.9-inch (3,020.7 mm) wheelbase and wide 67.28-inch (1,709 mm) front/rear tracks – a combination that lowers the center of gravity and enables smooth, stable ride and handling. Sharp reflexes are also supported by independent front and rear suspensions. The front suspension features a MacPherson strut design, with a direct-acting stabilizer bar and aluminum knuckles. Isolated mounting points help reduce noise and vibration.
The rear suspension uses a compact, state-of-the-art linked ‘H’ design, which uses an isolated mounting system to reduce noise and vibration transmitted to the passenger compartment. This design enables the handling prowess that comes with an independent suspension, but with minimal floor pan intrusion – a feature that helps the Acadia offer generous passenger and cargo space.
Acadia features standard power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering, with variable-effort steering available. The suspension and steering system meet the road via standard 18-inch wheels and tires, with 19-inch wheels available. Four-wheel disc brakes with ABS are standard. The Acadia also offers the following standard features that enhance ride and handling.
Acadia’s available Intelligent AWD system enhances dry-road handling and provides increased traction on wet, snow and ice-covered roads. It actively manages the torque distribution between the front and rear axles, based on factors such as wheel speed, throttle and surface conditions. There is no driver intervention; the system automatically decides how much torque to apply and it automatically delivers torque to the wheels that have the best traction. The AWD system’s tuning is revised to provide more rear torque bias during certain driving conditions.
Safety
Acadia’s 360-degree safety system helps protect passengers before, during and after a crash. A strong structure is the foundation, while a wide stance and low center of gravity helps reduce the likelihood of a rollover. Acadia’s structure is reinforced in numerous areas with high-strength steel, including a stiff steel cross-car beam welded across the floor between the B-pillars. It also uses dual-phase steel in select areas, such as the lower engine compartment rails. Dual-phase steel is strengthened in the paint oven and offers easier formability, reduced mass, greater strength and better crash energy absorption than most high-strength steels.
Acadia is equipped with six standard air bags: two dual-stage frontal air bags for the driver and front passenger; two seat-mounted side-impact air bags in the first row; and two head curtain side-impact air bags that cover all three seating rows. The head curtain side air bags are among the longest air bags in any production vehicle.
Complementing the air bags is GM’s rollover sensing system, which can preemptively activate the side-impact air bags if sensors determine a rollover is imminent. In the event of a rollover, the air bags stay inflated longer to provide increased occupant containment.
Acadia also comes standard with OnStar 9.0 (with a six-month Directions and Connections plan including Turn-by-Turn navigation and Destination Download) that features Automatic Crash Response.
