Powertrain
Powering the MDX is a 3.7-liter VTEC® V-6 engine that produces 300 horsepower at 6,000 rpm with 275 lb-ft of torque at 5,000 rpm. The V-6 employs a unique dual-stage magnesium intake manifold, direct ignition system, variable flow exhaust and an electronic Drive-by-Wire™ throttle system to help deliver V-8 performance with the fuel economy of a V-6. The MDX delivers an EPA fuel economy rating of 15/20/17 mpg* (city/highway/combined), placing it among the most fuel efficient SUVs in its class despite its performance, feature and safety advantages. The 2009 MDX, like all 2009 Acura vehicles, also meets stringent EPA TIER 2 – BIN 5 and CARB LEV II ULEV emissions standards.
The MDX’s advanced V-6 is mated to an electronically-controlled Sequential SportShift 5-speed automatic transmission with Grade Logic Control System designed to maximize acceleration and fuel economy. Operated via a console-mounted shifter, the Sequential SportShift transmission can function in a conventional fully-automatic mode or in manual mode for maximum driver control. To support the MDX’s generous towing capacity (rated at 5,000 pounds), a special front-mount transmission fluid cooler is employed. The MDX puts power to the ground through Acura’s breakthrough Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) system, an innovative full-time all-wheel-drive system that uses torque vectoring to actively distribute the optimum amount of power not only between the front and rear axles but also between the left and right rear wheels.
With torque vectoring, the yaw moment of the MDX can be controlled throughout a turn as the SH-AWD® system simultaneously improves traction and reduces understeer to greatly enhance handling precision and ultimate cornering ability. Working in conjunction with the MDX’s standard cooperative Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with traction control, SH-AWD® provides enhanced traction and driver control whether it be on-road or off-road, in dry, rain, snow or ice. When towing, special Trailer Stability Assist algorithms built into the VSA® logic help stabilize the vehicle after sensing oscillations of the vehicle or trailer. The MDX’s SH-AWD® system is further enhanced with hill logic that automatically adjusts the front/rear torque distribution based on the steepness of the hill grades.
Chassis
With an emphasis on top-level handling performance, MDX engineers targeted the world-class dynamics and driving feel of the top European SUV competitors. This led to the development of a long wheelbase wheelbase platform and a sophisticated suspension system that was tuned at Germany’s famed Nürburgring race circuit. The MDX’s 4-wheel fully-independent suspension makes use of MacPherson front struts and a multi-link rear design mounted to a rigid unit body structure with isolated subframes. The front suspension also uses unique hydro-compliance bushings that provide superior ride isolation and chassis vibration control.
Anti-dive properties were carefully engineered to reduce impact harshness and improve ride comfort. The rear suspension uses aluminum uprights to reduce unsprung weight for improved response, while special trailing-arm mounting points reduce body squat during acceleration. Coil springs, dampers, and anti-roll bars are tuned for the optimum combination of smooth ride and precise handling. For excellent stopping power and control, the MDX employs 13-inch diameter ventilated front brake rotors and 13.2-inch solid rear brake rotors along with anti-lock brakes (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. With Brake Assist, the MDX driver has the ability to more quickly apply full braking pressure during an accident avoidance situation.
An available Sport Package incorporates Acura’s exclusive Active Damper System that delivers an optimized combination of ride comfort and excellent handling. Using ‘active’ magneto-rheological fluid dampers and predictive computer algorithms, in as little as five milliseconds (0.005 sec.) the MDX can individually adjust the damping force of its shock absorbers ahead of actual body movements to provide vastly improved transient handling, road isolation, and body control. A cockpit mounted control allows the driver to choose between sport and comfort settings for the Active Damper System.
Exterior/Interior
The MDX has distinctive exterior styling that builds on the themes embodied in recent Acura products. The bold grille is framed by Xenon High-Intensity Discharge (HID) front headlights, giving the MDX an unmistakable presence on the road. The MDX rides on standard 18-inch alloy wheels and P255/55R18 M+S tires help give it a wide, solid stance. The cleanly sculpted MDX body design was inspired by the image of a high-end yacht.
The MDX interior blends purposeful sport sedan intensity with the best elements of SUV utility. Soft leather, highly supportive front bucket seats and a driver-oriented cockpit make it clear that the MDX is focused on the driver, without compromising passenger comfort. The outboard second-row seats echo the style and lateral support of the front seats, giving the interior a unique 4+3 seating design to further highlight its blend of sport and utility. Price: $28,960 – $32,060.
Powertrain
The new TSX’s size, weight and total performance work in balance. The result is a car that is comfortable for five passengers, yet agile and responsive for performance driving. The same balanced thinking applies to the TSX powertrain. With an advanced in-line 4-cylinder powerplant, TSX offers strong acceleration, combined with low overall weight and compact packaging. Fuel efficiency is also a strong point.
An advanced, all-aluminum 2.4-liter DOHC i-VTEC® in-line 4-cylinder engine produces 201 hp and 172 pound-feet of torque (MT), and incorporates Acura’s i-VTEC® “intelligent” valve control system that features Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC®) combined with Variable Timing Control™ (VTC™). Though peak horsepower is virtually unchanged versus the previous generation engine, peak torque output has risen by 8 lb-ft. In addition, the engine’s torque curve has fattened considerably. Horsepower, for example, is up five percent at 4,400 rpm. The result is stronger throttle response and better acceleration just about everywhere in the engine’s operating range. To achieve these power gains, the engine has a higher compression ratio, new valve timing, and intake and exhaust flow improvements. A new aluminum and resin composite intake manifold reduces weight over the previous aluminum design, while better insulating the engine’s incoming airflow from under-hood heat.
Though engine performance has improved, the powerplant delivers better fuel economy and has reduced emissions. A rear-mounted exhaust layout, close-coupled catalytic converter and advanced Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) team to help the TSX meet strict EPA 2 – Bin 5, and CARB LEV II Ultra Low Emission Vehicle standards (LEV-2 ULEV). The 2009 TSX comes with a choice of two transmissions – a standard 6-speed close-ratio manual transmission or a Sequential SportShift 5-speed automatic. The manual gearbox has a lightweight magnesium alloy case and multi-cone synchronizers providing a light, quick action with very short shift throws. To provide more spirited driving, the manual transmission now includes more performance-minded ratios for second and third gears.
The 5-speed Sequential SportShift automatic has a new straight-style shift gate (versus the previous TSX’s serpentine-style gate design) with Drive and Sport positions that provide fully automatic operation. The transmission can be shifted manually via new steering wheel mounted F1®-style paddle shifters at the driver’s option. Also new with SportShift is the ability to use the paddle shifters to make gear changes while in Drive, whereas previously this would only occur when in Manual mode. When using SportShift in Drive, the gear changes are made per driver command, but after a short time (with no further gear change input) the 5-speed automatic transmission returns to its normal Drive mode operation. Working in combination with the Drive-by-Wire™ Throttle System, the Sequential SportShift transmission’s shift logic results in quick, smoothly controlled shifts. Grade Logic and Shift Hold Control work in automatic mode to keep the transmission in the gear that’s ideal for the driving situation. Further improving performance and drivability is a revised torque converter lock-up assembly.
Chassis
In keeping with its lean, athletic appearance, the 2009 TSX offers a flat ride that is free from excessive pitching motions, along with outstanding agility and steering precision. As a result, the chassis serves a broader mission than that of the previous-generation TSX. Several advancements are responsible for this, including a more rigid body design including a new cross-braced roof structure and a new safety cage-type rear bulkhead structure.
SUSPENSION
The 2009 TSX suspension’s roll center (the geometric axis on which the body rolls or leans while cornering) has been raised compared to the previous generation TSX. This revised roll center reduces body lean during cornering, which better equalizes the workload for all four tires
Double-wishbone front suspension components include stamped-steel upper A-arms, cast-iron steering knuckles, cast-iron lower A-arms, coil-over dampers and a larger/thicker (26.5 mm diameter hollow versus the previous 25.4 mm hollow design) front stabilizer bar. A steel subframe cradles the engine, transmission and lower suspension components, and mounts on rubber bushings tuned to reduce road and engine noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) without compromising handling agility or steering precision.
The multi-link rear suspension includes stamped-steel upper A-arms, cast aluminum knuckles, double lower tubular lateral links, tubular steel toe-control links, coil-over dampers and a larger (17 mm solid versus the previous 15 mm solid) stabilizer bar. This system provides outstanding agility and handling, together with a flatter ride and excellent control of noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).
Body
The 2009 Acura TSX body design represents a new direction in Acura styling. The TSX was styled in Acura’s Wako design studio (located just outside Tokyo) and is assembled at the Sayama Factory in Japan. With a wider body that provides more agile handling and greater interior roominess – along with a lower seating position – the new TSX aims to be the best handling front-wheel-drive vehicle in its segment.
Inside, the new TSX is significantly quieter and more refined than the previous-generation TSX and its European competitors. Advanced aerodynamic treatments such as inside frame rails, underbody air deflectors, and a chiseled aerodynamic body shape help the TSX move through the atmosphere with a minimum of drag – thereby reducing fuel usage and lowering emissions, while enhancing quietness and high-speed dynamic stability.
Carefully styled to provide equal measures of aggressiveness and luxury, the 2009 TSX reestablishes the previous model’s relationship with image-seeking successful educated young professionals. The TSX’s dynamic styling is designed to appeal to a wide range of customers. These customers are active, regularly hitting the gym and participating in outdoor activities. Thus, they want a vehicle that reflects their passion for performance and athleticism while also supporting their active social lifestyle with roomy, comfortable seating for five and ample storage space.
Wheels And Tires
The 2009 TSX comes standard with 17×7.5-inch 5-spoke aluminum alloy wheels and Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 P225/50R17 all-season tires developed specifically for the vehicle. The wheels have a clear-coat aluminum finish designed to compliment the exterior color choices. Located under the trunk floor panel is a T135/80D16 temporary spare tire mounted on a 16×4-inch steel wheel.

Powertrain
The advanced technology built into the 2011 RL includes a refined 3.7-liter SOHC V-6 engine that develops 300 horsepower and 271 lb-ft of torque thanks to an innovative VTEC® valvetrain system for both the intake and exhaust valves, a high compression ratio, along with a special dual-stage magnesium alloy intake manifold that enables the intake to function as a single- or dual-plenum manifold design based on engine operating parameters. In addition to generating excellent power, the RL engine meets the latest EPA TIER 2 – BIN 5 and CARB LEV II ÚLEV emissions standards.
A new Sequential SportShift 6-speed automatic transmission is used that not only generates improved acceleration performance, but also delivers improved fuel economy. In addition, the 6-speed transmission teams with a new multi-clutch torque converter that not only has a higher maximum torque rating, but also has a new converter lock-up assembly. The lock-up assembly uses multiple lock-up disks that generate nearly double the facing area of a typical torque converter. The lock-up assembly not only reduces heat build-up during operation, but also allows for lock-up activation during a much wider range of driving conditions, which, in turn, generates improved fuel economy. As a result of the new 6-speed transmission and torque converter, city/highway/combined fuel economy* is now 17/24/20— an increase of 2 mpg in highway driving.
The new 6-speed transmission can be shifted via a console mounted straight gate shifter or by racing-inspired mounted paddle shifters mounted on the back side of the §teering wheel. The RL’s acclaimed Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD™) system simultaneously provides an exhilarating driving experience as well as peace of mind— regardless of most weather conditions. In addition to the numerous traction advantages of all-wheel drive, SH-AWD™ utilizes torque vectoring (the increase of rotation speed of an outside rear wheel) to create a ‘yaw moment’ to help the RL turn more effectively while under power. Such a yaw moment reduces the cornering load on the front tires to minimize understeer, to improve handling balance and to escalate total cornering grip.
Exterior and Interior
The 2011 RL’s exterior styling is not only distinctive and upscale, but delivers excellent aerodynamics and a stable feel at higher speeds. At the front of the RL is a new grill that teams with the athletically styled body to give visual indication of the vehicle’s performance capabilities— capabilities that allow it to challenge the most capable German and Japanese sports sedans. Comfort, quietness and ride quality are also on a par with performance sedan competitors. RL models equipped with the Technology Package also feature the Active Front Lighting System (AFS) for the Xenon High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights that swivel up to 12 degrees laterally in response to vehicle speed and §teering wheel input. When cornering, the inboard headlight swivels to illuminate a larger area of road surface throughout the corner, thus improving visibility and minimizing blind spots.
Inside, the RL features an elegantly styled interior that includes leather-trimmed heated front seats, comfortable space for rear seat passengers, plenty of storage areas and easy-to-use functionality. Like the driver’s seat, the passenger front seat has 10-way power adjustability. As part of the Technology Package, the front seats incorporate six levels of heating and ventilation and the §teering wheel and shift knob are trimmed with burlwood trim (the CMBS package adds maple wood trim). The owner of a luxury sedan demands a quiet ride, which the RL delivers in spades. However, going beyond the norm is the use of an acoustic glass windshield and an Active Sound Control system that team to reduce noise in the RL’s already quiet cabin. For 2011, increased use of insulation in the floorboard areas further reduces unwanted road noise.
The RL interior features an assortment of leading-edge technologies to enhance driver control and information access. For 2011, these technologies include a further updated version of Acura’s Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink™ wireless telephone interface that now allows for even easier dialing function when making calls utilizing the RL’s §teering wheel-mounted HandsFreeLink™ controls. Standard on all RL trims is a spectacular Acura/Bose®10-speaker Surround Sound System with DVD-Audio, AM/FM radio tuner, Bluetooth®Audio, XM® Radio along with ÚSB port and AÚX jack connectivity.
A key component of the RL Technology Package is the Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition™. The advanced system allows for easy control of key systems via voice control (with more than 700 commands) including voice guidance for turn-by-turn directions, over 7 million points of interest, Zagat Survey™ restaurant guide information, along with voice recognition to operate key audio and climate control functions. The innovative AcuraLink® Satellite Communication System features driver relevant technologies such as the available AcuraLink Real-Time Traffic with Traffic Rerouting™ and continuously updated AcuraLink Real-Time Weather™ with weather radar image maps.
Body and Chassis
To complement the high-performance powertrain, Acura engineers gave the RL a rigid yet lightweight Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure. A strong body was critical for achieving the engineers’ high targets for §teering and handling precision, outstanding ride quality, isolation of undesirable road inputs along with excellent safety. The RL’s body is constructed primarily of high tensile strength steel, while the hood, trunk lid, front fenders and bumper beams are made of lightweight aluminum.
A sophisticated four-wheel independent suspension system with double-wishbone (front) and multi-link (rear) architecture, isolated front and rear subframes, large diameter stabilizer bars and heavy-duty §teering rack components works in concert with the rigid unit body construction to complete the RL’s chassis layout. Subframes and suspension components made of aluminum reduce the RL’s weight for improved performance, more supple suspension action and better fuel economy. To provide excellent handling and looks, new 18×8-inch diameter 15-spoke aluminum wheels are matched with performance-minded Michelin Pilot all-season tires. While the new wheels add a look of visual sophistication, they also deliver mechanical sophistication thanks to the first-ever use of resonator wheel technology.
In an effort to quell road noise transmitted to the RL’s cabin, the new noise reducing wheel uses a polypropylene Helmholtz resonator that encircles the center portion of the inside of the wheel. Such resonator wheel technology significantly lowers middle frequency noise (between 100 and 500 hertz). Combined with the added use of insulation material on the floorboard areas of the RL, there is a 1.3 dB reduction in interior noise— which translates to a 15-percent improvement. Powerful, responsive and predictable braking is supplied by a four-wheel disc brake system utilizing 4-piston aluminum front brake calipers matched with 12.6-inch diameter ventilated front brake rotors and 12.2-inch solid rear rotors with large single-piston calipers. Braking is further aided by the use of a four-channel anti-lock braking system (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist.
When equipped with the Advance Package, linked to the RL’s braking system is Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) that uses a grille-mounted millimeter-wave radar unit to monitor the distance between the RL and the vehicle directly ahead. ACC can regulate the RL’s speed to maintain a pre-set following distance interval between it and the vehicle directly ahead. If following distance becomes too close, the ACC system warns the driver and applies the brakes if necessary.
The RL with Advance Package includes Acura’s Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™). Úsing millimeter-wave technology, CMBS™ monitors the distance and closing rate between the RL and the vehicle directly in front of it. CMBS™ then uses the information to continuously calculate the likelihood of a frontal collision as well as to alert the driver in different stages of urgency. If the likelihood of a collision significantly increases, CMBS™ will take actions such as to apply the brakes and pre-tension the front seatbelts.
Safety
The 2011 RL utilizes Acura’s rigid Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure that features extensive use of high-tensile steel and lightweight aluminum components to take vehicle construction beyond conventional safety protocols— all while keeping overall vehicle weight in check.
The ACE™ body structure’s front-mounted polygonal frame design enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal crashes by utilizing a network of connected structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle— reducing the forces transmitted to the passenger compartment. To further enhance safety the RL employs active head restraints built into the front seats to help improve neck and head protection in the event of a rear impact collision.

A standard Maintenance Minder™ system and up to a 100,000-mile tune-up interval offer further time and cost savings for the TL owner.
The standard transmission on the 2009 TL and TL SH-AWD® is a Sequential SportShift 5-speed automatic featuring F1®-style §teering-wheel mounted paddle shifters and Grade Logic Control. Merging the convenience of an automatic with the enjoyment of SportShift manual gear selection, the transmission also features an overdriven top gear for maximum fuel efficiency on the highway. In fact, the Acura transmission has the widest gear-ratio spread of any 5-speed transmission in its class, providing strong acceleration in lower gears and relaxed, fuel-efficient highway cruising.
Exterior/Interior
An evocative and powerful exterior body design dramatically advances the TL’s image as a performance luxury sedan. (concept carz) Designed by Acura in Southern California, the TL utilizes an array of styling techniques to express motion – and emotion – even when the car is at rest. Featuring Acura’s new signature front grille, body sides defined by strong character lines, sweeping C-pillars and new LED taillights, the 2009 TL is simultaneously Acura and yet wholly unique. Plentiful use of luxury and performance features add visual appeal while adding to the TL’s vigorous statement – including bright HID projector-beam front headlights, pronounced wheel arches, a standard power moonroof and genuine stainless-steel body trim.
Wheels and tires are as expressive as the exterior styling. Standard on the 2009 TL are 17-inch aluminum wheels with P245/50R17 all-season Bridgestone Turanza or available Michelin Pilot tires for confident year-round performance. The TL SH-AWD® comes with 18-inch aluminum wheels with lower-profile P245/45R18 Michelin Pilot tires for more agile handling. Finally, the TL SH-AWD® offers available 19-inch aluminum wheels with aggressive P245/40ZR19 Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 summer tires for the ultimate TL performance experience. In keeping with its mission as a driver’s car, the 2009 TL interior features a new ‘dual personal’ layout that provides both the driver and front passenger with their own personal space. Thanks to its larger exterior dimensions, the new TL has 1.3 inches more rear legroom and 0.5-inch of added rear shoulder room compared to the previous generation TL.
Acura’s commitment to luxury and technology becomes apparent from the first moment the driver’s door is opened. With sweeping shapes, generous use of premium materials and passionate attention to detail, the TL rewards the discriminating eye. The design and execution of the interior is an artful combination of leather surfaces, accented by metallic and wood-pattern trim. An impressive array of premium standard features includes a power moonroof, dual-zone adaptive climate control, 10-way adjustable (8-way power seat with 2-way power lumbar support) driver seat, 8-way adjustable power front passenger seat, and §teering-wheel-mounted F1®-style paddle shifters for the Sequential SportShift automatic transmission. (posted on conceptcarz.com) An 8-speaker, 276-watt audio system that includes a 6-disc CD changer, AM/FM radio, XM® Satellite Radio, Bluetooth® Audio, ÚSB port and AÚX jack connectivity, and HandsFreeLink® wireless telephone interface are standard.
Available on both the TL and TL SH-AWD® is a Technology Package that includes the most comprehensive array of advanced electronic features ever offered by Acura. The Technology Package includes the Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition™, AcuraLink® real-time traffic, AcuraLink® weather with Doppler-style radar mapping, an Acura/ELS Surround® premium audio system and Keyless Access System with pushbutton ignition. An intuitive interface dial as well as sophisticated voice recognition capability simplifies control of this impressive technology. Premium Milano leather seating surfaces included in the Technology Package further enhances comfort and visual appeal.
Body/Chassis
Major improvements in structural engineering for the unit-body further define the 2009 TL. The list of substantial changes begins with the relocation of frame rails inside (rather than underneath) the vehicle’s floor pan, resulting in a nearly flat body underside. Benefits of this design include improved crash safety, a significant reduction in interior noise levels, and reduced aerodynamic drag that helps enhance fuel economy. Another significant improvement is the increased use of high-strength steel, which simultaneously improves the unit-body’s overall strength while helping to reduce weight. For additional weight savings, aluminum is used for the hood, the front suspension subframe and rear suspension knuckles.
Ride quality and passenger comfort benefit from the 2009 TL’s larger exterior dimensions. Featuring 6.0 inches greater exterior length, 1.8 inches more overall width and a modest 0.5-inch increase in overall height, the TL is noticeably larger than its predecessor. The larger body size directly contributes to greater interior roominess; it also allows a 1.4-inch longer wheelbase to improve ride quality and a significantly wider track (1.1 inches wider in front, 1.8 inches wider in the rear) helps generate even more tenacious cornering power. The TL employs a double-wishbone independent front suspension and a multi-link independent system in back.
Further improving ride quality and road-holding are new dual-stage ‘blow off’ style hydraulic suspension dampers, new hydro-compliant bushings (used to mount the transmission and key suspension components) and a new ‘smart’ engine mount design. On the Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) model, more performance-minded suspension and brake tuning, larger wheels/tires, racing-inspired front brake cooling ducts, and specially-tuned Electric Power Steering (EPS) take the enthusiast’s driving experience to an even higher level.
Safety
Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) represents a major advance in structural engineering for the 2009 TL. In simple terms, ACE™ better dissipates crash energy in a severe frontal collision through the use of dedicated load-bearing frame structures that efficiently distribute crash energy through the body structure-while also helping to preserve the integrity of the passenger compartment. Acura first introduced ACE™ to the Acura line for the 2005 model year and its inclusion in the 2009 TL means that every vehicle in the Acura model range now has this advanced safety engineering.
Six airbags and a new active head restraint system for the driver and front passenger headrests top the long list of passive safety features built into the new TL. The airbag array includes dual-stage, dual-threshold front airbags, new dual-chamber front seat side airbags with front passenger seat Occupant Position Detection System, along with side-curtain airbags for all outboard seating positions. Additional passive-safety features include 3-point seatbelts and head restraints for all seating positions, driver and front passenger seatbelt load-limiters with an automatic tensioning system and a Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH) system that permits quick, secure attachment of up to two child seats in the rear seating area.
The new TL includes sophisticated active safety features including powerful 4-wheel disc brakes (with ABS, EBD and Brake Assist), Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), all-season tires and an available SH-AWD® system. Adding to the list of standard exterior safety features are daytime running lights (DRL) along with 2.5-mph front and rear bumpers.
The 2009 Acura TL is designed to meet the latest crash-safety regulations, including the new FMVSS214 side crash standards (which the TL meets three years early) and the new FMVSS301 rear crash standards. ( posted on conceptcarz.com) Internal testing indicates that the 2009 TL should achieve the highest ratings in National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash tests. The 2009 Acura TL is assembled in Marysville, Ohio and is covered by a comprehensive 4-year/50,000 mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty and a 6-year/70,000 mile powertrain limited warranty. Additional benefits of ownership include Acura Total Luxury Care (TLC), which provides free 24-hour roadside assistance, concierge service and trip routing.
